Each Dennis Heffley BAC President gave us valuable information about their organizations and operations. Complete details are in the BAC Meeting Minutes provided by our BAC Secretary Cathy Wilson. Cathy Wilson Secretary President’s Report: Dennis Heffley – Dennis started off by reminding us that tonight is a night to celebrate the first part of a New Year. And to help us start off the year, we have 3 guest speakers - Doug Pringle, the President of Disabled Sports USA Far West, Jennifer Van Gilder, Vail Resorts Regional Sales Director and Warren Martineau of Forest Suites in South Shore Lake Tahoe. Dennis announced that he recently represented BAC on a Park City Familiarization (Fam) Trip. Dennis noted that Park City is excited to be having us return this year for our BAC Utah Ski Trip. Dennis then introduced three people who are new to our organization- Tracy Frizzar, Dina Jennings, and Sonia Brown, who are all members of the Black Avalanche Ski Club. DenFebruary, 2013 3 nis met Tracy and Dina on his trip to Park City! We all hope that Black Avalanche will join BAC! Stephen Lang of the Park City Chamber of Commerce who hosted the Fam trip asked if the participants would be willing to participate in a TV commercial, so Tracy, Dina and Dennis all participated. This past Tuesday, Dennis also skied a few runs with the Monterey Ski and Social Club. He ran into a number of people from several of the Bay Area Clubs at Heavenly. Dennis also stayed at the Forest Suites! Secretary: Cathy Wilson – Karen Davis made a motion to approve the December minutes; Dave Meinhardt seconded the motion and the minutes were unanimously approved. Nominations Open ~ President of Bay Area Snow Sports Council – Dennis Heffley – Dennis noted that, as part of his/her duties, the President of BAC gets to represent the organization on many levels and has an opportunity to learn from a host of knowledgeable individuals. That person also gets to work with a great Board of Directors. If you are elected, you would attend quarterly meetings with the Far West Ski Association www.skibac.org son is Mr. Doug Pringle. Dennis has nominated him for this year’s Snowsports Builder and Doug has accepted the nomination. BAC General Meeting Board and attend an annual meeting of the National Ski Council Federation. You would get to work with a number of wonderful industry representatives and heads of various organizations. Dennis then opened the nomination process for President of BAC. Dennis had been previously nominated. Three calls for nominations were made, but no further nominations were forthcoming. Harry Davis then moved that the nominations be closed and Al Hurley seconded. Karen Davis made a motion to elect Dennis by Right of Acclamation; Barbara Erickson seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Dennis thanked everyone and stated that it is an honor to be reelected. However, he also announced that this will be his 10th and final year as he would like to be able to move on to other positions at the National Level. Guest Speaker: Disabled Sports USA Far West - Doug Pringle ~ President – Doug started by touching on a few points of his personal story. He lost his leg in Vietnam and was taught to ski by several World War II vets. He was so inspired by the experience that he has gone on to make working with disabled sports his life’s work. Doug noted that Dennis and BAC have been long time supporters of DSUSA Far West through events such as the A’s game, the Ski for All, the Ability Challenge and more. Last year several ski clubs, such as Inskiers, Rusty Bindings, and Castro Valley participated in the Ability Challenge. Doug provided a flyer on this year’s challenge and asked all to participate. He encouraged all to raise pledges and personally promote the event to their friends and family. Email is an easy way to ask and is often successful. BAC General Meeting Far West 2014 Domestic Ski Week. The trip will go on sale in March at the General Meeting. Lodging, air, etc. will be assigned on a first come first served basis, so Paula will be waiting until she has all the information before deposits are accepted. Vail is offering Epic Passes as an alternative to the ski pass. The passes will not be discounted, but a small $25 break will be offered on the trip if a pass is purchased. The BAC Park City trip at the end of February is sold out. Guest Speaker: VAIL Resorts Regional Sales Director (Heavenly, Kirkwood & Northstar), Jennifer Van Gilder – This year there is quite a bit of snow up in Tahoe. Jennifer asked how many people have used the Epic Mix and Passes, which scan right through a jacket. Many have purchased them. Epic Mix also scans your vertical feet and pictures. For $8 at Heavenly and Northstar you can use the pass to also “race” against Lindsey Vonn on a special race course. At the end of the year, prizes will be given to the fastest racers. You can also earn pins and medals. It’s a great way to have competitions between members of your club. At Heavenly, a new burger bar has been installed. You can make hundreds of combinations. At Kirkwood, cat skiing is being expanded. Avalanche awareness classes are also being offered. Shuttles are being run from South Shore to both Kirkwood and Northstar (check the schedule for days offered). If clubs are looking to come up for even a small trip, please contact Jennifer. Clubs already taking advantage of this offer were Monterey, Top of the Hill and Rusty Bindings! Vail Resorts has also set up special deals for rentals through rentskis.com. Guest Speaker: Forest Suites in South Shore Lake Tahoe, Warren Martineau – Warren made an offer to Doug Pringle to help get his organization to South Shore for some events. Thank you Warren, for supporting DSUSA Far West! Forest Suites is positioned very close to the Heavenly Gondola in South Lake Tahoe, within easy walking distance (54 steps!). Many people at the meeting indicated that they have February, 2013 5 Public Affairs: Linda Indreboe - 2013 FWSA Convention – The 2013 FWSA Convention will be held at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno - June 6-9th. Registration packages will be released soon. Rooms and RV parking will both be offered. The convention officially starts Thursday night with a pub crawl. On Friday, various activities will be offered such as a Golf Tournament; River Rafting Trip on the Truckee; River Walk; Tahoe Area Hike; Grand Sierra Spa Day; Bowling, Mini-Golf & Pai-Gow and more. The Silent Auction will be held as usual on Friday night. Great deals can be obtained at the auction. BAC will also be hosting a party Friday night starting around 10:30PM! All BAC attendees are invited. On Saturday, there will be a travel expo, leadership seminars, guest speakers and the Saturday night awards banquet. Darren Rahlves, former Olympian, will be the keynote speaker. Darren sponsors the Banzai Tour of extreme skiing. On Sunday, following the Sunday “eye opener”, the convention will end with the annual business meeting. Dennis encouraged all to submit entries for awards. Awards are a great way to get your club to participate in the convention. Also, we need volunteers. We need you to go back to your clubs and encourage your members to get involved. Also, encourage your members to attend. The more people we have the more fun the activities will be, the more we will raise at the auction and the more value your club will get from the various leadership seminars and sessions. If your club has a cabin, you can also use this to encourage people to attend the auction, even if they can’t make the entire convention. FWSA is offering a Club Incentive Program this year. Post convention, FWSA will rebate to the club, every 6th early bird full voting delegate registration fee. In the next day or two an email will come out and a qualified member from your club will be invited to go to Grand Sierra, to become familiar with the property and then be qualified to talk with your club about it. The next convention meeting will be held on January 17th at the Englander. We need your club participation. Please plan on having a representative attend. Treasury: Paul Vlasveld reported that we are doing well with our treasury and once the directory income and expenses are finalized, we should be slightly ahead from a breakeven point this year.
