Meet Our Seafood Buffet Chefs
Many of you come into the Lodge the last Friday of the month and
enjoy the monthly Seafood Buffet, but you probably wonder who is
doing all the cooking for the hundreds of people? Our Lodge has a
dedicated staff of Volunteers that devote their last Friday of the
Month to preparing and cooking a lavish feast for our members and
qualified guests. Johnny & Bobby Sutton, Paul Frye, Estelle Miller,
and Billy all work very hard so YOU, our members, can have a great
meal. When you see these hard working volunteers around the
lodge, please take a moment and say thanks for the hours they
volunteer so others can have a good time. If you have a couple of
hours a month and would like to help out in our kitchen or social
quarters, see Tom our administrator. We will never turn away a
volunteer.

to thank the many volunteers that made these
events possible.
The Holiday season is fast upon us and loads of
entertainment, fun and cheer will be happening

From: the Editor
I normally just edit articles and add the pictures for our bi-monthly newsletter but I felt after this past month of October that I could write something
really positive about our lodge. Even though we are a very eclectic lodge with members ranging from very young to senior citizens; golfers, pool
players, dart players, smokers and non-smokers, empty nesters to members with young children who will be the future of our Lodge. On October 5th no
matter what type of member it was, the lodge was full of volunteers to help our mentally challenged guests enjoy the day at our Lodge. Whether it was
flipping burgers, helping with Special Olympics, or serving drinks, the Franconia Moose Members came out in droves. It was amazing to see so many
different members come in and help and members who we do not see on a regular basis show up to support our Annual Tidewater event.
It was amazing to have one great Community Service event in a month but to follow it up a week later with a benefit to help one of our own members,
Matt Adams who is struggling thru his treatment of Brain Cancer; it truly brought tears to my eyes. When the Chapter and Lodge agreed in midSeptember to have the event for Matt, we had three weeks to plan and coordinate everything. I asked for raffle items and you Franconia Moose
members, answered me with so many donations we had to add two additional tables to the raffle area! I came to several ladies and asked you to make a
cake, a pie or cookies and when we were setting up Sunday, October 13th, I didn’t know where we were going to put everything! But when Route 66
started playing to my delight, our Hall was filled with supporters helping a fellow Moose Member. Walking through the hall and throughout our social
quarters on Sunday reminded me why I became a Moose Member, and I hope to those of you who attended, or donated to the event, it reminded you,
too. I cannot thank everyone enough for your help, whether in a monetary form, physically helping with set up, serving food, sodas, selling tickets and
cleanup. We worked together - our eclectic group and we got it done.
Even though our members can be so different and may beat their drums to a different beat, when we shout out for help, we can count on our Moose
Family to do what you can, and we thank you for that.
THE FRANCONIA MOOSE FAMILY CENTER COULD NOT ACCOMPLISH THE GREAT AND WONDERFUL THINGS WE DO FOR
MOOSEHEART, MOOSEHEART, OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR MOOSE HOME WITHOUT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.
Thank you for choosing Franconia to be your Moose home.

MOOSE LEGION
COMMITTEE
Chairman, Jody Ryals
It was great to see all of you who turned out for the
benefit for Matt Adams which was held on October 13th.
Matt is a Legionnaire and an Officer of our Lodge. The
show of support and love for Matt was tremendous and
we wish to thank all of you who participated.
I would like to remind everyone that the Moose Legion
Committee meets the third Friday of every month at 7:30
pm; therefore, the meetings will be on November 15th,
2013 and December 20th, 2013. There is a potluck dinner
and social hour after the meeting, so bring a dish to share
and join us.
We will be having our annual chili cook off contest at the
December meeting. So cook up your best chili recipe and
bring it on down for the contest. All entries are welcome.
There will be a $5.00 entry fee and a cash prize will be
awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.
Unfortunately, the bus trip we had planned for Sept. 15th
had to be cancelled due to lack of participation. We will
be planning another one in February, March or April so
start planning now to go. An exact date will be
determined later. The information will be in the next
newsletter.
The Moose Legion will be raffling off a Christmas
Holiday Basket. Tickets will go on sale during
November. If you wish to purchase tickets, please check
with either the bartender, me, Skip, or Ben Owens.
There is no application fee to join the Moose Legion and
applicants can join for just ten dollars. So now is the time
to ask your family and friends to join. A Moose member
is eligible to apply for membership in the Moose Legion
after he has been a member for six months or sponsored
one member into the fraternity.
The mission of the Moose Legion is “To Have Fun While
Providing Greater Service To The Moose Fraternity”.
The vision is “Persuade All Qualified Lodge Members To
Join The Moose Legion And Do Some Good Thing For
Someone Each Day.” We should keep this in mind when
promoting the Moose Legion.
Legionnaires, let’s all “GO THE DISTANCE” this year
and sign that Moose Legion member.
Jody Ryals
Chairman
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
William Bean
Thank you sponsors for asking your friends and family members to
join our great fraternity. New members, please tell us how we can
make our Lodge a place you want to come to regularly. We have a
suggestion box as you enter the Social Quarters that you can put
your suggestions and comments in. Hope to see you visiting the
Lodge during one of our upcoming social events.
FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE
Chairman, Ben Owens
The Fellowship committee would like to extend to all
of our members and friends, a warm wish for a Safe
and Happy Holiday Season.
Community Service
LOOM Board of Officers
As the Holiday time rolls around, so do the needs of
many families in our area to help them thru these
difficult times. The Lodge and Chapter are collecting
food donations in November and December to help
those in needs to have something for Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Please when you stop in the Lodge bring a
nonperishable item. The collection baskets are located
next to the booths by the shuffleboard table.
Also the Chapter is having a Winter clothing and coat
drive for Koinonia. Please look through your closets
for gently used coats and clothing that you no longer
need and think about donating them to help someone
who really needs one.

SPORTSCOMMITTEE
Chairman Skip Staggs
Most of our sports are moving indoors as the weather chills down. Watch your favorite Football Team on Sundays
in the Lodge (six TVs, six different games). Hockey season and Basketball season are in full swing and Nascar is
winding down with the final race on November 17th in Homestead, Fl. Who will be the next Nascar champion?
I was hoping to be able to announce which lodge won the Triathlon event between our Lodge and Fredericksburg
but scheduling issues have forced the match rescheduled for Sunday November 3rd at the Fredericksburg Lodge.
The Monday Night APA Pool league is doing great. Our team Billy & Friends went to Vegas in August and
finished very well. We are very proud to have a Moose Lodge team go all the way to Vegas. Way to go Danny,
Christine and your team. In January the 2014 Spring Session will start and we have room for 3 more teams. If you
have an interest in playing pool or have a team that would like to join our group on Monday nights, see me or
email me and I will give you more information. We have an opportunity every year to send three teams, one from
each session, to Vegas if they continue to advance in the upper level tournaments. The Sports Committee will be
having a Scotch Doubles tournament on Thanksgiving weekend for those couples in town; we will be challenging
other Lodges to send their Scotch Doubles teams to compete against our Lodge.
To our golfers winter is upon us and the greens will be very chilly. I would like to congratulate Brett Sweeney,
Saundra Courtney and Pat Dowdy for their great finishes in the VMA State Golf Tournament in September.
Members - this is your Lodge, if there is a sports activity you want to see started here at the Lodge, let me know. I
will try and make it happen.
Have a happy and safe holiday and see everyone around the Lodge.
Skip Staggs
Sports Chairman
Way to Go Franconia Golfers
On September 21st and 22nd, members from
Franconia Lodge traveled to the V.M.A. State
Golf Tournament. The event was hosted by
Bedford Lodge #1897. After the two day
event, the scores were tallied and Franconia
had three members placing.
3rd place Mens: Brett Sweeney
2nd place Ladies: Sandra Courtney

Do you know of a child that can take advantage of the benefits at Mooseheart??
Historically, children have come to Mooseheart because the father, a member in good standing with the Loyal
Order of Moose, passed away. It is now Mooseheart's policy to admit qualified children who have a need.
The Admissions Committee considers all applications of children in need; when and if there are capacity
considerations, preference must obviously be given to those children who are affiliated with the Moose member families.

EVENTS AT THE FRANCONIA MOOSE
On September 14th the Women of the Moose hosted the
annual WOTM Anniversary dance. This year’s theme was “A
Century of Caring” in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the
Women of the Moose. The Sasparilla Band played, a nice
dinner was served and our queen candidates were escorted
by the most handsome men at the event. Our candidates, Pat
Cleveland, Pat Davis & Pat Pristavec (does anyone notice a
pattern here?) graciously volunteered their pictures for the
voting cans this year. By just pennies our new WOTM
Anniversary Queen is Pat Pristavec, the Chapter Junior
Regent. Queen Pat took her new honor very seriously, and
donned her crown for the next Chapter meeting that was held
on September 18th. Thank you to all the members and guests
that came out to support the event.

Tidewater on October 5th
On October 5th, the Franconia Moose Family Center hosted our guests and friends from the
Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center. For 39 years, this has been the Lodge’s premier
fundraising event of the year. And this year was no different!
From the moment they arrive in the late morning, their day begins with a warm greeting
from Lodge and Chapter members and the Edison High School Cheerleaders, cheering
each special person as they arrive. These special people are treated with an outdoor picnic,
followed by music and dancing. The Fairfax County Police Department made a visit,
handing out honorary deputy badges. Later in the afternoon, our guests are encouraged to
participate in the Special Olympic Games.
Later in evening, we moved our guests to the Lodge Hall for a fried chicken dinner,
followed by the presentation of checks and performances by the Chris Collins Dance
Troup. Last but not least, we had a visit from Elvis, which was the highlight of their
evening.
This year the Franconia Moose Family Center donated over $10,000 to the Sarah Bonwell
Hudgins Center that had been raised throughout the year. We would like to thank
everyone who donated, volunteered and were just there. Another very rewarding and
satisfying day was had by all.

EVENTS AT THE FRANCONIA MOOSE

one of our own members Matt Adams. Everyone came together,
the event was a huge success and a great time was had by

Matt and I want to thank everyone for Matt’s benefit which turned out to be such a wonderful event, more so than
we ever imagined. Special thanks to everyone who planned, prepared, set up, worked, donated basket raffles and
baked goods, cooked, cleaned up, and everything we don’t even know about that happened behind the scenes. We
are so deeply touched by all the support, caring, prayers and love poured out to Matt from our Moose family and
we want to thank you all so much. There are really no words to thank all of you or any way to ever repay such
kindness and generosity. Thank you all so very much for coming to the benefit and for the overly generous
donations to help Matt with his mounting medical expenses. Thanks also for the cards, emails, food, hugs, rides
and other things we’ve needed. Matt was so nervous on the way to the lodge thinking nobody would be there, and
imagine our surprise and amazement when we pulled into a parking lot full of cars. I wish you could have seen the
biggest smile Matt had that, yes indeed, more friends than we ever imagined were there to see and support him.
Thank you for welcoming our non-Moose friends and families and for coming all together to support Matt. The
love, kindness and friendship bestowed upon Matt and me on Sunday was so incredibly touching and lifted Matt’s
spirits more than you know. It means so much to have so much support as we go through the most difficult time of
our lives. You really proved what the Moose is all about and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
Patti & Matt
