Friendship, FY2014 Annual Report
Friendship SPRING 2015 Our Friendships: The Art & Science Annual Report 2014 Find the latest LBFE news and events on page 19 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 We say that our mission is to bring friendship to Chicago’s lonely and isolated elders. This sums up neatly who we are. Yet I frequently hear longtime as well as new supporters of Little Brothers say that there’s so much more to our mission and to what we do every day. We agree. Like our volunteers, those of us here know that something extra often happens in our business of friendships. That’s why this year’s Annual Report hopes to uncap the magic of what we do. We see it as the art and science of friendship: It’s our special combination of head and heart, work and play, facts and feelings. More than 55 years ago, Little Brothers began its mission of developing friendships with Chicago’s lonely and isolated elders. While much has changed over the past five decades, the core of our work remains the same, connecting volunteers and staff members with elders to build and sustain friendships. Many of our social activities have evolved to meet the current needs of our elders, but the Little Brothers’ way of getting to know our elders and building on those connections is what we do best. Nurturing friendships is fraught with nuances, as we all know. Recognizing that our relationships with the elders begin in the later stages of their lives means a few more challenges. We’ll never know our elders as children, teens, young adults, or mid-career ip Friendsh SPRING 2015 ence e Art & Sci dships: Th 2014 Our Frien Annual Report Find the news latest LBFE ts on page and even On the cover: LBFE elder Joan, a member of the LBFE Elder Advisory Committee, and volunteer Program Assistant Kirsten recently visited Audrey’s House, where they both enjoyed good weather, peaceful surroundings, and great conversation. professionals. Our friendships start when endings are much closer. That means we accelerate the get-to-know-you process and often learn more about our elders than those who have known them for decades. We’re good at this because we balance the two key dimensions of our brand of friendship: the art of listening and connecting and caring, and the science of serving and solving and supporting. We pair our people skills with expert knowledge of the aging process, putting us uniquely in tune with the changing needs of elders through the last decades of their lives. Last year 1,162 volunteers gave 32,713 volunteer hours to ensure that celebration of life programs, holiday parties, personal visits and calls of reassurance, summer vacations, personalized Christmas gifts, and food bag deliveries took place. By most standards, the numbers and the outcomes are impressive. But it’s the understanding, compassion, and care that multiply our success beyond measure. We balance the two key dimensions of our brand of friendship: the art of listening and connecting and caring, and the science of serving and solving and supporting. I see the art and science of our work every day, every year. Here’s just a sample of how we succeed. Tina is a volunteer who traveled to Spain and recognized the surname of one of our elders as the name of a small town near Madrid. Tina took time on her next vacation to copy and frame a family crest and a map showing the location of the city in 19 Friendship is published by Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, Chicago Chapter, at 312.455.1000. This act of kindness demonstrates love, as well as a respect for legacy and heritage that is so priceless to an elder. Chairman of the Board Principal, Chief Wealth Officer Dignitas Frank is a volunteer who comes to Little Brothers every Thursday without fail to help Spanish-speaking elders learn English. He’s giving our elders a practical tool to make their lives better—along with his belief that his 80-year-old students will learn a second language. Vice Chair of the Board Regional Director (Atlas) The Department of Family Support Services – Senior Services Lisa was a visiting volunteer who loved to surprise her elder John with spur of the moment visits. Whenever she found herself nearby or wanted to eat out, she’d call John and invite him along. Lisa knew that sharing a pizza or some ribs would brighten John’s day and ensure that he had a good meal. We can’t imagine a better place for us to continue to cultivate and celebrate friendships with our elders than at Audrey’s House in Batavia, Ill. The opening of this exceptional home away from home for our elders and for LBFE was a crowning achievement for all of us in 2014. Audrey’s House will be an extraordinary year-round gift for years to come. We offer our sincere thanks to each of you for your generous financial support of Audrey’s House and of all the work we strive to do. We are deeply grateful for every occasion you spend with our elders in the true spirit of friendship. Please enjoy reviewing our Annual Report for FY2014, which we hope will continue to inspire you to be part of LBFE and share in the lasting gift of friendship. The average age of our elders is 82 and 38% use a walker or wheelchair to get around. Women comprise 80%, and 20% are men. Our elders represent the ethnic diversity of Chicago: 44% are African American, 34% are Caucasian, 20% are Hispanic, and 2% are Asian or other races. We make a lifelong commitment to our elders. We promise to remain alongside them and provide opportunities for friendship, celebrations, and fun. Our elders count on us every day, and we could not achieve our goals of relieving their loneliness and isolation without the support of our donors and volunteers. VOLUNTEERING Our volunteers generously contribute their time and attention to our elders. This year, volunteers spent 32,713 hours serving our elders—the equivalent of 817 full-time weeks of service. We welcomed 665 new volunteers this year: 408 came to us as part of a group and 257 volunteered individually. Our dedicated and caring volunteers are essential to making a positive impact on lonely and isolated elders. VISITING Phone calls and visits from LBFE friends improve an elder’s quality of life. This year, volunteers and staff provided friendship and reassurance through 11,009 phone calls and visits to elders. GIVING Our ability to forge lifelong connections with isolated elders is supported by generous donations from thousands of individuals and dozens of corporations and 3 2014 Annual Report foundations. In FY2014 we received $2,080,444 in contributed support. HOLIDAYS Our Holiday Celebrations for elders provided 1,646 memorable experiences. Elders joined us for Thanksgiving and Christmas parties, and homebound elders received home-delivered meals and visits on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. In April, we celebrated LBFE’s mission and history at our spring holiday event in honor of our founder, Armand Marquiset. Personalized holiday gifts, purchased by generous donors, were wrapped and delivered to 988 elders. VACATION PROGRAMS We welcomed 470 elders to our vacation programs, including 338 elders who vacationed at the newly opened Audrey’s House, took day trips and made overnight trips to Audrey’s House, or participated in summer activities around Chicago. 132 homebound elders enjoyed special vacation-themed visits. CELEBRATIONS OF LIFE Throughout the year, elders joined us to celebrate life. We enjoyed refreshments and distributed gifts at 12 birthday parties. We gathered for 12 family reunions and welcomed elders three times a week at the Lloyd Walding Brain Fitness Center. Elders attended weekly coffee clubs, monthly movie clubs, and monthly sessions for the Creative Café. Six additional parties provided more opportunities for elders to get together with peers and volunteers. WINTER HOMEBOUND VISITS We work to alleviate loneliness for those elders whose major physical or emotional challenges prevent them from leaving home. Volunteers and staff visited 130 elders as part of our homebound visits program, including delivering plants and other gifts to the elders to show our care and concern. SPECIAL ASSISTANCE Challenges like limited access to healthy food or a lack of transportation can threaten our elders’ independence. On 388 occasions, Little Brothers staff and program assistants provided direct services to help our elders remain as self-sufficient as possible. We also packed and delivered a total of 1,055 monthly food bags to help nourish 111 elders. ELDERS GIVING BACK Many of our elders enjoy giving back to the community. In FY2014, LBFE elders gathered on two occasions to make toiletry bags for the homeless at St. James Catholic Church. Others participated in the Intergenerational Program to share their life experiences with college students and school children, and partnered with students from Esperanza School to learn from each other. A new Civic Engagement Committee involved 30 elders creating activities to serve others while having fun. This committee also hosted a bingo social at a senior residence and a social day for LBFE elders. LASTING SUPPORT Celebrating the lives of our elders is an important part of our community. Whether attending services, sending flowers, making final arrangements, or remembering elders at our annual Day of the Dead gathering, we recognize and honor our elders after they pass away. This past year, with your help, we accompanied 103 elders to the end of their lives. 32,713 hours of service to our elders by 1,162 volunteers 52 11,009 elders joined Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly personal visits and calls of reassurance were made to elders 1,055 food bags delivered 388 1,646 holiday experiences for elders at a party or through home-delivered meals and visits occasions when program assistants or staff provided special assistance to elders 470 elders participated in our summer vacation programs, including 132 homebound elders who enjoyed special summerthemed visits 3,648 instances when elders participated in Celebrations of Life (includes luncheons, birthday parties, family reunions, and outings) 988 elders received personalized holiday gifts www.littlebrotherschicago.org 4 Opening Audrey’s House Celebrating LBFE’s New Vacation Home and Program Center The highlight for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly in FY2014 was the official opening of Audrey’s House on November 1. Co-chairs for the Campaign for Audrey’s House Marilyn Hennessy (at right, in photo above) and Susan Ciucci (at left) cut the ribbon, and elders, guests, neighbors, and friends toured our new year-round facility designed to host vacations and programs. The opening day celebration was topped off with a performance by the Jesse White Tumbling Team. Audrey’s House was named for the late Audrey Chesner, a cherished elder and generous donor. Located in Batavia, Illinois, 40 miles west of Chicago, our new facility can welcome up to 12 elders overnight to enjoy backyard barbecues, chats by the fireplace, relaxing on the front porch, and delicious meals prepared in the full-service kitchen and served in a charming dining room. Elders also can take fun day trips to nearby shopping and restaurants in Kane County. The Campaign for Audrey’s House is working to raise $500,000 to fund repairs, renovations, and enhancements to ensure a truly accessible, comfortable, and beautiful year-round home away from home. Gifts and pledges totalled $196,000 as of January 31, 2015. Visit www.littlebrotherschicago. org to learn more about Audrey’s House—and support the Campaign. $500,000 Goal $400,000 $300,000 Audrey’s House serves as our year-round home away from home. The Jesse White Tumbling Team dazzled with their acrobatics. $196,000 $100,000 Elders who visit Audrey’s House say, “It’s like something out of a movie. It’s like a grand hotel.” 5 2014 Annual Report Donors, friends, and neighbors celebrated the official opening. LBFE elders and volunteers are a diverse group and so, too, are the bequest gifts we receive. Each tells an important story about the donors—and how much they cared about Chicago’s elders. Thanks to their planning and generosity, LBFE is able to provide programs and services to lonely elders free of charge for years to come. Isabelle N. Atz Lenora C. Thanks to a new initiative called Great Neighbors, LBFE is now ready to introduce even more Chicagoans to the benefits of bringing friendship to older adults. Relying on a user-friendly online tool, the Great Neighbors initiative can be managed virtually to connect compassionate citizens with older adults in their neighborhoods to ensure elder needs are being met. “We realized at LBFE that we could not reach every senior in our city through our existing programs. But with a little help from friendly neighbors, we could substantially increase our reach,” says Simone Mitchell-Peterson, chief executive officer of LBFE Chicago. “Great Neighbors is an innovative way of using technology to build social networks of older adults who do not take part in our current programming.” The Great Neighbors program and online tool, created by our founding organization in France, allows friendly neighbors to log-in and select from a broad menu of typical interactions such as: •Arranging time to help an older community member grocery shop •Completing a simple household repair •Enjoying lunch together A special feature of the program is that it allows neighbors to share service to the elders in their communities based on individual schedules, abilities, and preferences. There will be active give and take as friendly neighbors and seniors build mutually beneficial networks. “Chicago is a city of 2.7 million residents, so it’s important that we identify the communities where this program will thrive,” says Heather Dudzinski who is managing the U.S. launch of the initiative. Over the next several months, Dudzinski will work to establish a committee to refine and test the Great Neighbors online tool and identify pilot areas. “Our goal is to start with two Chicago locations, but it’s the enthusiasm from friendly neighbors and older adults that will drive this effort. The potential is limitless.” Dudzinski adds, “If you think your community is full of great neighbors and seniors, or if you are interested in learning more about the committee, get in touch!” Contact Heather Dudzinski at 312.455.1000 or hdudzinski@ littlebrotherschicago.org. LBFE celebrated Christmas Eve in Northwest Indiana with 23 seniors and six volunteers who enjoyed dinner at a local restaurant and seeing Christmas decorations at the Welcoming Center in Hammond. Expansion Program Coordinator Jackie Townsend says the elders loved the food and good company, and came away with “treasured memories.” 19 2014 Annual Report IN MEMORIAM Remembering our elders who passed away between Aug. 1, 2014 – Jan. 22, 2015 Maria G. LBFE sincerely thanks the 85 individuals, 16 companies, 12 community groups, 5 schools, and 4 church groups that helped us provide very special gifts to 988 elders during the 2014 holiday season. Little Brothers’ volunteers also brought holiday cheer, delivering home-cooked meals and friendly conversation to 238 homebound elders on Christmas Day. Elder Ruby was thrilled with her gifts, which included a box of chocolates that meant so much to her: “I am reliving the moments I spent with my dear husband who would buy me these chocolates all the time because they are my favorite!” Homebound elders enjoyed home-cooked meals delivered in special holiday bags. 21 2014 Annual Report Here’s just a sampling of the gifts that were carefully purchased to match personal requests from our elders: •Pearl-style necklace and earrings •Coffee-maker by Mr. Coffee •Set of kitchen pots and pans •Variety of body soaps and lotions •Winter jackets, scarves, and gloves •A throw blanket in navy blue •Men’s pants and sweaters •Answering machine •Restaurant gift cards Handmade gifts also were popular. For instance, students from the Evanston Day School provided 33 beautifully decorated holiday bags, 21 boxes of chocolates, and 18 rolls of birthday wrapping paper. The Alphonsus Boy Scout Troop 889 made sure our elders received 145 toiletry bags, 50 pairs of socks, 17 holiday cards, and 16 bags of candy. Volunteer Renee Bajek provided 50 handmade heart pillows, giving our elders comfort and brightening their homes. Says Assistant Director of Development Sherri Gorski: “In a season focused on family and friends, it’s so important to reach out to our isolated elders and give them a reason to celebrate. And we accomplished just that, with the help of our generous donors and friends. Thank you so much!” Upcoming Events April 4Birthday Party 5Easter Home- Delivered Meals 11-25 Food Bag Delivery 184th Annual Fête d’Armand Marquiset May 2Birthday Party 8 Creative Café 9Vicky’s Family Reunion 15 Movie Club 16-22Food Bag Delivery 23-25LBFE Closed for Memorial Day 30 Rosa’s Family Reunion June 6 Birthday Party 12 Creative Café 15-18 Vacation Getaway 19 Movie Club 20 Ron’s Family Reunion 20-27Food Bag Delivery 22-25 Vacation Getaway 26 Summer Outing TBD 27 Maria’s Family Reunion 29-Vacation Getaway July 2 July 3-4 LBFE Closed for Independence Day August September 1Birthday 5-7 LBFE Closed for 3-6 Vacation Getaway 8 Summer Spa Day 10-13 Vacation Getaway 15Carmen’s 11 Creative Café 12 Birthday Party 14-17Vacation Getaway 18 Movie Club 19Mary’s Party 6-9 Vacation Getaway 10 Creative Café 11 Birthday Party 13-16 Vacation Getaway 17 Movie Club 18-25 Food Bag Delivery 20-23 Vacation Getaway 24Summer Outing Labor Day Family Reunion 15-22 Food Bag Delivery 17-20Vacation Getaway 21Creative Movie & Lunch 25 Hina’s Family Reunion 27-30 Vacation Getaway Family Reunion 19-26 Food Bag Delivery 26Sarah’s Family Reunion Café 24-27 Vacation Getaway 28 Movie Club 31-Vacation Getaway Sept. 3 For more details about events for elders, call 312.455.1000.
