It is the second time that this IFAC symposium will be hosted in Germany after Karlsburg/ Greifswald in 2000, where both Symposium Chairs attended this symposium for the first time. The application for Berlin as BMS 2015 location was an initiative of the German Technical Committee Automation in Medicine which integrated their regular workshop AUTOMED into the IFAC symposium this year. Berlin, Germany’s capital, is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, offering a wide range of cultural and touristic attractions. Berlin is a green city, with rivers and canals, and is particularly enjoyable in summer and early fall. The city of Berlin is the largest city in Germany with more than 3.5 million inhabitants. There is another good reason for choosing Berlin as location for BMS 2015: Berlin is the Health Capital. Health treatment in Berlin has a long tradition. For more than a century, the Charité hospital as well as scientists such as Robert Koch, Rudolf Virchow and Ferdinand Sauerbruch affected German and international health science. Berlin forms Germany’s largest center of medical activity. Berlin offers an outstanding international scientific environment, excellent supply networks and leading medical facilities. There are over 120 hospitals in Berlin-Brandenburg, a large R&D test-market for pharmaceutical products, medical devices and materials, cooperation on basic research, development and application enabled by companies and research institutes, cooperation between medicine, biotechnology, chemistry and optical technology. About 280 companies manufacturing medical technology are based in the region Berlin-Brandenburg, the emphasis on cardiology, laser-medicine, minimal invasive medicine, radiation therapy and biomedicine. As always, a symposium is a great opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss exciting problems in our field, interact with colleagues, and make new friends. We invite everyone to take advantage of this opportunity. Thank you for your participation and contributions to BMS 2015! Thomas Schauer and Olaf Simanski BMS 2015 Symposium Chairs 2 Scope of the Symposium The symposium will provide a forum for the presentation of new developments in the important interdisciplinary field of biological and medical systems. Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt Hermann von Helmholtz Building Fraunhoferstr. 11-12 10587 Berlin-Charlottenburg The PTB Institute Berlin is not only a direct neighbor of TU Berlin campus but also in the close vicinity of famous landmarks like Ku’damm, Schloss Charlottenburg, Deutsche Oper, Tiergarten, the river Spree as well as the Zoo and Aquarium. History of the PTB Institute Berlin The PTB is the national metrology institute providing scientific and technical services. The division “Medical Physics and Metrological Information Technology” is accommodated at the PTB Institute Berlin and has a strong reputation in measurement technology and biosignal processing. In 1887, the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (PTR) was founded on the Charlottenburg campus at the initiative of Werner von Siemens. Hermann von Helmholtz, who was its first president until his death, resided in a villa on the premises. Following World War II, the PTB in Braunschweig was founded at the initiative of Max von Laue. Based on an agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Berlin, in 1953, the PTR merged as the “Berlin Institute” with the PTB located in Braunschweig. The oldest building on the Charlottenburg campus, the Observatory, shines in new splendor since the anniversary year of 2012. The doubtlessly most beautiful building, the Hermann von Helmholtz Building, rounds out the premises to the west and serves as location for BMS 2015. Symposium Language The official language of the symposium is English. Please note that translation facilities will not be provided. Name Badges All delegates will receive a name badge upon registration. Everyone is kindly requested to wear his/her name badge during the symposium. The welcome reception takes place in the Lichthof, the atrium of the main building. © TUB © Siri Svegler As a particular highlight of the welcome reception, famous Berlin singer songwriter Siri Svegler will perform live on stage with her band. If you are wondering what kind of music to expect, here’s what the Rolling Stone Magazine wrote about her: “Gently buzzing pop with nuances of folk and jazz. Svegler’s songs are like a graceful dance, holding you in a warm embrace.” Conference Dinner, September 1, Tuesday The conference dinner will take place on Tuesday, 1st of September, in the restaurant “Sphere”, which hovers 207 meters above the city center in the famous Berlin TV tower. At any table the sightseeing tour is included: Within an hour the restaurant makes one turn about its own axis. Bus transfer from the symposium venue to the Berlin TV Tower and back to Ernst-Reuter-Platz will be provided. The buses leave 18:15 in front of the PTB and return at about 23:00 in the night. © berlinphotos030 PTB Lab Tour September 2, Wednesday © PTB Berlin 8 The division “Medical Physics and Metrological Information Technology” of PTB is involved in the development of measuring methods and measuring procedures for medical diagnostics. The scientific focus is on laser-assisted measuring techniques, NMR-tomography and -spectroscopy, magneto-cardiography and -encephalography (PTB Biomagnetic Center in Berlin), and the development and calibration of testing devices and reference materials. In the tour, four exemplary laboratories can be visited: NMR-spectroscopy, magnetoencephalography, magnetic nanoparticle characterization, and the seven-layer magnetically shielded room. Insert Title Right Keynote Speakers Chiara Dalla Man University of Padova, Italy Monday, August 31 The type 1 diabetes simulator and its use in in silico clinical trials Abstract: The development of UVA/Padova type 1 diabetes simulator will be presented in a historical perspective, highlighting the main differences between the “older generation” and this “new generation” simulator, which indeed convinced the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to accept this tool as a substitute for preclinical trials for certain insulin treatments, including closed-loop algorithms (artificial pancreas, AP). Recent developments of the simulator will also be discussed, which now allow to simulate realistic long term in silico scenarios. The simulator has proved to be a useful tool to test robustness and safety of AP algorithms. However, its use is not limited to closed-loop control of diabetes, but can be used to answer a wider set of “what-if” kind of questions. Examples of different employments of the simulator will be provided, e.g. for assessing the usefulness of glucose prediction to generate hypoglycemic alerts or testing pharmacodynamics of new insulin molecules. Steffen Leonhardt RWTH Aachen University, Germany Tuesday, September 1 Why nature closes the loop! Abstract: This talk will focus on the intrinsic principles behind closed-loop systems in physiology. We will look at the properties of positive and negative feedback loops. Starting at the general concept of homeostasis, we will move from cell physiology and organ level to systemic levels. Yeong Shiong Chiew University of Canterbury, New Zealand Wednesday, September 2 Model-based mechanical ventilation: A road trip from concept to randomized controlled trial Abstract: Mechanical ventilation is a primary support for patients with respiratory failure. However, patient condition and their individual response to treatment are heterogeneous and variable over time. Thus, general, one size fits all treatment approaches may not be suitable for many, and a more optimal, individualized approach is needed to obtain better care and outcomes. Model-based therapy offers the opportunity to individualize mechanical ventilation therapy that caters directly to patient-specific needs at any given interval, where real-time identified model parameters are used to personalize the model and optimize the resulting care based on patient-specific response. This talk focuses on the journey taking a conceptual model and model-based approach to mechanical ventilation from idea, through clinical proof of concept, and to a large randomized controlled trial – covering both the tangible and intangible success and roadblocks. 9 Technical Program Insert a Title Monday, August 31, Morning Mo2TA 10:30-10:50 10:50-11:10 11:10-11:30 11:30-11:50 11:50-12:10 Mo2TB 10:30-10:50 10:50-11:10 11:10-11:30 11:30-11:50 11:50-12:10 Metabolic System and Control of Glycemia (Regular Session) Helmholtz Lecture Hall Chair: Pielmeier, Ulrike Aalborg Univ Co-Chair: Jorgensen, John Bagterp Tech.
