THE PRESIDENT’S JOURNAL
By Skip Cleaver
What a terrific year we have enjoyed! We have had outstanding
coaching and a remarkably successful competitive year to be
really proud of. And we have had
a tremendous amount of fun at
track, at racing events, at social
happenings, and as volunteers in
many races. Our club has enhanced the pure enjoyment of our
sport, and contributed to the running community and the community at large. Congratulations!
We did exceptionally well in several USATF Grand Prix
races-our GCS Triad Racing Team was third overall in
New England, and placed high in several divisions. We
captured the New Hampshire Grand Prix, welcomed
many new members, logged hundreds of miles in Mine
Falls Park and all over, enjoyed some great parties, and
had our share of individuals and teams win many honors
in a variety of races.
There are many highlights in addition to our competition:
The annual Hash Run, the Ultimate Track Workout
(thanks Steve Moland), ice cream night at the track, pizza
night, the Luminary Relay (thank you Kevin Reynolds),the Last Supper (thanks Mike Leary and George
LeCours), . We enjoyed many trips to cities all across
the country, showing the Gate City colors in many states
and many races. We have entered teams in the New England Cross Country Championships and the National
Team Cross Country Championships in Ohio.
We were well represented and competitive in our justconcluded Mill Cities Relay (not only did we do exceptionally well in the competition, but we won the new
Warren Church Participation Award for entering the
most teams of the 17 clubs involved (our own Warren
Church is the only individual to complete all 24 of the
Mill Cities Relays). Yes, by all accounts and any standard it was a very good, very exciting year.
Thanks to all members who supported our events and
activities; thanks to our terrific Executive Board, Ed
Deichler, outstanding and professional treasurer Deb
Miner, Michelle Poublon, Stan Klem, Mark Sage, Dan
Dugan, and to our Competition Director, Michael Wade;
also heartfelt thanks for our Racing Team Manager Scott
Brown, Competition Coordinator Michael Amarello, and
to our Webmaster, Steve Moland, equipment manager
Kevin Reynolds, and many more who put in valuable
efforts time after time..
Thanks to our terrific Newsletter Editor William Farina,
December 2007—January 2008
who puts up with our contributions every two months to
make this letter possible. Thanks to Applefest Race Director Chet Rogers and Pack Monadnock Director Damien Rowe.
We have had outstanding coaching and when you see
these guys thank them for their terrific effort and patience: Dave Camire, Jim Stronach, Dave Dunham,
Keith O’Brien, Brian Withers, and Richie Blake. Outstanding at every level!
Thanks to every member who ran in competition and
team events for the club and/or volunteered at our races,
activities, and functions. What a Great Year! Thank you
all!
We are going to have an even greater year in 2008—a
terrific year. We are happy you will be a part of it. With
our growing membership, our ambitious and innovative
Board, our fantastic volunteers, and our core members,
we are going to have one great 2008. We will be expanding and taking our club to another level of competition and innovation. We will increase our presence and
competitive level in the USATF Grand Prix, we will have
more members in the USATF Mountain Circuit, and we
will have additional runners in national contests, including USATF Track and Field, and National Cross Country. And we will once again win the coveted Mill Cities
Relay Trophy.
We will continue a training program to bring all members to a higher level—walkers, beginning runners, mid
pack runners, and runners that excel. We will support
our practices and programs and bring everyone to a
higher level in competition. We will help many, many
members achieve their goals.
Please join our winter indoor track program. If you can’t
make those sessions in Milford, the weekly Wednesday
runs at Pennichuck Junior High will continue.
Your Executive Board works hard to make Gate City one
of the top clubs in New England. Gate City must truly
be, “an athletic and social organization dedicated to the
promotion of running and fitness at all levels.” We hope
everyone can attend the Annual Awards Dinner in January. And we wish everyone good luck in achieving their
running goals for 2008. With the support of fellow
members, our individual members and the club as a
whole can really have another banner year.
Think safety, and please do your part for environmental
protection.
See you on the track, roads, and trails.

Dates Change for Gate City Indoor Track
All Members are Welcome to Join
Medical Center 6K Selected as USATF-New
England Grand Prix Race
The Gate City Striders will be sponsoring winter indoor track training sessions again this year. These
sessions will be held at the Hampshire Dome in Milford, NH on Wednesday evenings beginning January
9, 2008 and running through March 26, 2008 (please
note the date changes).
The Medical Center 6K in downtown Nashua,
created to support our Fitness University Program, has been named the USATF-Grand Prix
6K Championship, and will be the only New
Hampshire event in the series. This will be the
first time the club has been involved in hosting
the Grand Prix since the old Nashua Trust 10K
at Elm Street.
This will provide 12 Coached Sessions at the Hampshire Dome’s 1/5 mile banked, soft surface track.
They will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a warm-up, and intervals will start at 6:15. The primary session will run
for about one hour, with a 15-minute cool-down at
7:15. The sessions will be complete at 7:30.
There is a minimal cost to each participant; we must
pay the Hampshire Dome and also pay our coaches a
small fee. Friends and relatives are welcome to join
these sessions—just have them fill out the application
and indicate “non member”. The price for all sessions
will be $84.00—that is $7.00 per session.
Please use the application and waiver inserted in this
news letter, or download an application and waiver
from the GCS Website and send them along with your
check to Gate City Striders Indoor Track, P O Box
3692, Nashua, NH 03061. We must have both the application and signed waiver, please. These sessions
are very inexpensive compared with other indoor programs in the region. And the facility is first rate with
one of the longest indoor tracks in New England. Renowned coach Jim Stronach will once again lead these
sessions.
Keep that fall season form through the winter months,
or get a head start on the spring season. These sessions will be multi level—that is, they will be for beginners up to experienced runners. We hope you can
join us for this innovative program in this beautiful
new facility. For additional information or questions
e-mail Skip Cleaver at tjcleaver@aol.com.

The Fifteenth Annual Freeze Your Buns Series Returns
Gate City’s popular Freeze Your Buns 5K series returns for the 15th annual edition beginning January 20th
at Conway Arena in Nashua. This series has been run
in Merrimack at the YMCA, the Nashua Athletic Club
in Nashua, in Litchfield at Darrah Pond, and for the
last several years, at Conway Arena. The arena is conveniently located just off the Turnpike Exit Five on
West Hollis Street (near Stellos Stadium and the
Nashua Police Headquarters).
There will be five 5K’s in the series, running every
two weeks. The dates are January 20, February 3,
February 17, March 2, and March 16. Participants
running all three events will earn a tech T-shirt and
another special gift.
This is Leap Year. Get leaps and bounds ahead of the
competition, and keep moving throughout the winter.
Please see the application in this newsletter, and sign
up for one or all five (there is a 20% discount if you
sign up for all five in advance).
This is a great way to stick to your goals and keep the
pace up through the winter. The course is nearly always traffic free and clear of snow (unless there is a
snow storm just before race day/time), and the Conway arena offers a nice warm place to relax after the
event. This is a low fee, low key event offered to
those needing a little boost through winter. Be a part
of it.

Applefest Celebrates 25 Years
Gate City’s marquee event, the Applefest Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay celebrated 25 years—five years for the Relay—with the October 6th
running in Hollis, New Hampshire.
This race is known throughout the northeast and even across the USA as
one of the best half marathons anywhere, and it offers unique features
available in few races of any kind. This was another great year, and another sellout, indicating once again just how popular this event has become. All Gate City members can be very proud of this event.
This year, in the hottest day in the
history of the event, there were 969
finishers (of 1,200 registered) in the
half marathon, and 103 two-person teams finishing (of 150 registered); and there were 147 volunteers giving back to make it all happen so flawlessly.
One of our outstanding coaches, Mr.
Dave Dunham, holds the event record with his 1:06:07 set in 1992.
Gate City’s own Patti Laliberte of Merrimack still holds the women’s
record, with 1:18:22 set in the very first year of the event, 1983. Amazing! Johanna Fickenscher of Durham (1:26:18) and Mark Mayall of
Maynard, Massachusetts (1:16:30) became the 25th champions of this
outstanding race. Hundreds of individuals have held single age records
and been recognized over the years.
The event began in 1983 when there were few half marathons, and has grown into one of the most sought
after year after year. Originally conceived by some of the Gate City pioneers and founders, such as Phil
and Paula Quinn, Dave and Sally Sargent, Bill and Cookie Gray, Vickie
and Alan Sears, Jane and Adrian Levesque, Shaun and Betty Scanlon, and
many more, this event enjoyed excellent leadership and organization from
the start.
This incredibly excellent leadership has continued to the present
day, with Director Chet Rogers,
Co-Director Emily Strong, Chairman Steve Moland, Damien Rowe,
Michelle Poublon, Mike Hagerty,
and many more (too numerous to
name here) on the terrific Applefest Committee. Congratulations to
ALL—including volunteers, and all past and present staffers who
have made this event such a landmark success.

The Delta Dental 10k was the last

main rivals GDTC. The point breakdown was as follows. GSRT 115, GCS 112, GDTC, 97. A total of 19
Striders scored points. They were lead by Joseph Rogers
who scored 10 points and Cathy Merra who scored 9
points. The following 9 GCS runners finished 3rd place
(or higher) in their respective age group. Karen Pattelena – 2nd FO, Joe Rodgers – 1st MM, Cathy Merra –
2nd FM, Rich Galera – 3rd MS, Fiona McDonnell – 3rd
FS, Mary Minami – 2nd FV, Harry Carter – 1st MA, Bill

hours to get home. I've got to get the wet clothes off and get back to St. Michaels College (a fine place to stay,
by the way) where a hot shower awaits. I need food, but I also want to get out of Burlington ASAP - but I don't
want to press that clutch! Finally, after sitting in the car for a half-hour, I put it in reverse, press the clutch, and
start back to St. Mike's. The two miles back to the highway take seemingly forever. It's stop and go, I'm on and
off the clutch repeatedly. Damn!
At St. Michaels's there are some other marathoners who also appear to be ravaged by the cruelty of the distance. It reminds me of the old movie Night of the Living Dead, the way we're all so stiff and slow. The
shower (and a bowl of GoLean Crunch) does wonders, and I feel like I can drive home safely. I turn in my
keys to the students who gave up their Sunday afternoon so that we could have a late checkout, and walk past a
few more marathoners who are slowly making their way back "home." I'm thinking about whether I should
ever do this again, but I can't make a decision right now because I know that the answer would be "no way."
Tomorrow maybe I'll forget how much pain I am in right now. That's why I'm writing this down, so I won't
ever forget.
