This Easter marks the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising, the rebellion that
eventually led to Irish Independence, and possibly hastened the end of the British
Empire. During Easter week that year rebels took over the centre of Dublin and
against overwhelming odds held out for six days until they were brutally suppressed.
This major historical event features on a number of GSCE and A level syllabuses, and over the
coming week there are a number of programmes which would provide great resource material
for this subject.

the story of the Irish Easter Rising, Three of those rebels were Brendan O’Carroll’s uncles.

Liam Neeson narrates a documenatary using archive footage and contributions from
academics to examine the events and evaluate their significance in world history.
Easter 1916: “The Enemy Files”BBC2, 1 April 7pm
This documentary, presented by Michael Portillo, explores the rebellion from the Brtish point
of view at the time using cabinet papers, private correspondence and military reports.

In Ireland, a huge project is underway to try and understand what was happening to the
country at the time. Letters from private collections have been sourced from all corners of the
island of Ireland, shedding fresh light on the Ireland of 100 years ago. In this programme,
Fintan O’Toole looks at some of those letters which reveal a country beyond the politics,
divisions and rebellions of the Easter Rising.
