Volunteering as a family is a great way to help your local community and to strengthen family bonds through cooperative work. In this guidebook there are a couple of sections that can help you find a project for your family: The Nonprofit Index highlights agencies that have service projects appropriate for families. The index also features a few volunteer opportunities that require chaperones - perfect for families looking to serve together. One-Day Volunteer Opportunities are highlighted in our special event calendar. Many of these projects feature volunteer roles and responsibilities that can be easily adopted by a family. National/Local Service Events feature many youth/family friendly service project as short-term activities. The Nonprofit Wish List highlights the materials that many organizations need to fulfill their missions. A family can work together to develop a drive to collect these resources. Still looking for ideas? Here’s a few examples: Get Outdoors by volunteering at a local park or environmental center. Planting, weeding and trash pickup are all easy activities that significantly help the local environment. (see: Environment) Serve as a foster family for a puppy or kitten. Many animals need families who can provide a temporary home before they can be adopted. This includes guide and therapy dogs who start their training in a volunteer’s home. (see: Animals) Lead your community by organizing a food or material drive. Many nonprofit organizations need support ranging from nonperishable food to used newspapers for puppies. Organizing a drive is an easy project that a family can adopt. (see: Nonprofit Wish List) Adopt-A-Family The hardest part of a natural disaster is the recovery. Many families find themselves without necessities such as food and clothing. Your family can pledge to support a family in need by pledging to collect resources for communities recovering from disasters. (See: Families) You can always see an up-to-date list of volunteer opportunities on our website. You can also speak with a volunteer referral specialist by calling us at (914) 948-4452. Many organizations have “wish lists” of items they could use. You can run a gift drive during the holidays or collect blankets for dogs and cats at a shelter. Below is a short list of needed items and agencies who can use them. If you don’t see your favorite charity here, just call them up and ask if they have a wish list for in-kind donations. If you have an item you wish to donate (i.e. computer, furniture, clothes) and do not know where to go, you can call United Way’s Gift-In-Kind program, 914-997-6700. United Way will distribute a description of the item you have to several hundred nonprofit agencies. A: The most important thing to do before volunteering is to consider yourself. Two important questions you should ask yourself is “what are your interests” and “do you have any skills”. Answering these questions can help identify the type of agency you would be happiest working for. For example if you are a musician and have an interest in working with children, Heartsong Inc, a nonprofit that provides free music lessons for children would be a perfect match for you. Finding the best role for yourself requires a bit of creativity and introspection. If you need help, you can always call us at (914) 9484452 Q: I want to volunteer but I’m too young. A: Many volunteer coordinators are responsible for multiple programs on top of overseeing the volunteers at their agency. Not being called back is not a sign of disinterest. Sometimes you need to be persistent in order to start a dialogue. You also might be reaching out to a staff member who is no longer with that agency. If you don’t get a call back, try calling the agency’s general number and asking for their volunteer coordinator. Q: The nonprofit organization that I want to work for does not have an open volunteer job. Can I still call them? A: Yes you can. Some nonprofit agencies are willing to develop a role around your skills and interests. However, before you reach out directly to the agency make sure you know your goals and why you chose that agency in particular.
