Chamber members and Ambassadors gather with their new President Myra Cook at Fairfield Inn. Greetings from the president y first days in the Yadkin Valley have M been full of meeting members, learning my way around and falling in love with the area. It is going to be so easy to call the Yadkin Valley home for my dog HarleyDavidson and I. During the interview process many visions were discussed, all very exciting. I love the idea of the Yadkin River being a tourist destination. Can’t you just see families rafting down the river, getting out and walking to a meal at a local restaurant and shopping? One of my passions is the Overmountain Victory Trail, which I am a lifetime member. Promoting the varied trails we have to different groups and getting them here for meetings, lodging and eating is something I look forward to. I am quickly finding out the Yadkin Valley is a paradise we need to share with the world, or as a friend of mine said “Your description of the Yadkin Valley makes me think you’ve fallen into a Hallmark card”. Stop by and see me to say hello and share your ideas. Once again it’s time for Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity’s ART for HOMES. This fundraiser invites local artists to participate in creating art from items donated to the Habitat ReStore. The sky’s the limit on what media or methods can be used: paint a chair! deconstruct a toaster! tile a table! or wherever the imagination leads. The finished project is then auctioned off at our annual ART for HOMES celebration in September. The nitty-gritty details: Items may be selected from the Habitat ReStore with a value not to exceed $50. ReStore staff will assist and must approve the item chosen. (If you later choose not to participate, you may purchase the item or return it to the ReStore.) All ART is due to the ReStore by September 7, 2013. So, Artists, come by the ReStore at 102 East Market Street in Elkin to select your item. We’re open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm. And all friends of Habitat, plan to join us this fall at the ART for HOMES auction and celebration -- great music, food and wine, and ART! Questions? Last year, I shared with you my vision for our Chamber of Commerce and how I believed we were on the brink of soaring to new heights to better serve our business community. Now, at the end of my year of service as Chairman, I truly believe our past year’s accomplishments, events, and celebrations have helped set the tone for tremendous future actions. I would like to express my sincere thanks to those who encouraged me to become a board member with our Chamber of Commerce. As an educator, I have always seen the direct correlation of an educated citizenry and a successful business community. I have had the pleasure to talk and work with many of you as we look to increase the visibility and effectiveness of our business community. Each of you are to be commended for sharing your talents and expertise in making our Chamber stronger, thusly, relating our efforts in making our Chamber more personable and focused on making each business a viable partner in the Yadkin Valley region. Of course, there is more work to be done and I am confident that with Jerry Stroud, our incoming Executive Board Chairman, and the Executive Board members, our path to impact our business community will continue to make our regional community more focused on ways to better assist individual members. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Chamber Chair. I will continue to be an active member and reassure you of my promise to assist our business community in any way that I can. Strong schools, businesses, and economic development will guarantee all of us of the goal to make our community stronger and have positive impacts on our neighbors and families. I want to personally thank the Executive Board team; Misty Matthews-who is to be commended for her role in our recent transitional period; my school board for supporting me as I took on the task of Chamber leader; my wife Steva for her support and presence at many of our events; and of course, each of you as business leaders in our community, as we look to a better economic future for the Yadkin Valley Region. As I stated earlier, a new era has begun. I encourage each of you as Chamber Members to talk to your friends and neighboring business owners to join our team as we welcome Myra Cook as the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce President. It’s going to be an exciting time as she brings knowledge, talent, a personal connectivity, and a vision for making our Chamber one of the best in North Carolina.
