Chamber Newsletter, Spring 2009 — Page 7 Page 10 — Chamber Newsletter, Spring 2009 hether it’s in our business, civic organization or at home, we have all been forced to take a good hard look at our finances and evaluate how we spend our money and if the return is worth the investment. Your annual investment in the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce is no exception. As you review the value of your chamber membership, keep these things in mind: The Chamber staff at our office in Elkin and our Tourism Specialists that work at the Jonesville Welcome Center seven days a week until 8:00 p.m. provide direct referrals for your place of business. They hand out and mail out hundreds of brochures for local businesses and thousands of our VISIT the Yadkin Valley Tourism Guides. They respond to telephone calls and e-mails, again making direct referrals to your business. The value of those services is easy to gauge. What may be a little harder to measure are the things the Chamber staff and its Board of Directors do for our business community as a whole. Take for example our recent Newly Elected Officials Reception at Cedarbrook Country Club. This beautifully renovated Homestead was built in 1895 by R.L. Hendrix, a pioneer of the mountain area. Hand built with knotty pine from his saw mill, he constructed a beautiful home that has become a historical stopover point on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Scott and Cara Higginbotham have spent more than a year in creating a comfortable yet modern Bed and Breakfast. Blue Ridge B and B offers six bed- rooms, each uniquely decorated for a different era in time, along with Jacuzzi tubs, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, wine bar and a great porch to sit and relax while listening to the wildlife of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Being located between Mile Post 225 & 226 on the Blue Ridge Parkway makes the Blue Ridge B and B a great location while enjoying America's most Scenic Drive. Come Visit!! NCWineValley.com My husband and I are pleased to become members of the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce and excited to introduce NCWineValley.com to the chamber and to the community. When we first began traveling to the Yadkin Valley from Charlotte, NC in early 2006, we mostly enjoyed wine tasting and vineyard tours but quickly became aware that the Yadkin Valley was home to much more than great grapes! Our enthusiasm grew as our experiences broadened and we began taking advantage of the outdoor activities, summer festivals, quaint cabin retreats, and cordial local cuisine. Family and friends, after hearing about our excursions, often asked: “Where should we go and how do we get there?” After countless drawings of maps and itinerary suggestions, we dedicated ourselves to the creation of an all-inclusive travel planning website to expose all the wonderful surprises that reside in North Carolina’s wine country. We know how frustrating it can be to map out a custom itinerary with turn-by-turn directions, so we add that feature as well. We hope you will take a look and enjoy planning your signature excursion with NCWineValley.com. Owners and operators of businesses related to NC Wine and Tourism are invited to advertise with us. This FREE home repair project is available to low-income homeowners in Yadkin County and the Tricounty area. This is a true partnership between Habitat, churches and volunteers, and people in our community in need of home repairs! Homeowners fill out an application and return it to Habitat. If their home repair is selected, UYV Habitat then works with local volunteers and church groups to make repairs such as installing handrails, building ramps, replacing windows, and the like (repair projects serving a health or safety need are given priority). Materials costs are underwritten by Smith Phillips Building Supply, W.E. Sale & Sons, the Byron Wolfe Memorial Fund, and Valspar paint. If you would like to work with us, or are a homeowner who could use our help, call the Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity office at 336-526-2277. “Home Repair underway with Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness” Home Repair project. . The Hampton Inn and Suites at Shelton Vineyards was specifically recognized for its loyalty and quality assurance. Serving up more than just a comfortable bed and continental breakfast, this Hampton features some Jacuzzi suites among its 102 rooms, a heated pool, modern exercise room and the chain's only wine bar. Featuring the finest wine selection from the adjacent Shelton Vineyards, a premier East Coast winery, the bar offers a lively atmosphere for guests. What began as a dream of brothers Charlie and Ed Shelton has become a reality. "We built this hotel and winery in the hopes of providing guests with a unique experience that keeps them coming back for more," says Charlie Shelton, co-owner. "We are honored to have our complete commitment to total customer satisfaction recognized with the Connie Award." The Shelton's vision of an all-inclusive destination is cemented by the vineyard itself. Connected by a short scenic bike ride (on a hotel-provided bicycle) or a quick shuttle trip, the hotel and winery co-exist naturally among the beautiful landscape, providing a complete experience without ever leaving the area. At the winery, guests get an inside tour of Shelton Vineyards where knowledgeable tour guides give an overview of how the wine is produced (everything from grape growing to the gravity flow process). The tour culminates with a tasting of Shelton's award-winning wines in the tasting room. Next door, among the grapevines, is Shelton's Harvest Grill, where guests can relax on the patio overlooking the kitchen garden while Chef Paul Lange crafts seasonal specialties made with a Southern twist. The menu, dotted with sophisticated comfort food like his Pretzel Crusted Tuna or the Cornbread Crab Cakes, is sure to please even the most finicky eaters. After a delicious dinner and a quick trip back to the hotel, guests can enjoy a nightcap at the wine bar and a dip in a Jacuzzi before settling into the Cloud Nine bedding provided in every room. Don't think for a minute that such a huge destination has lost its personal touches. From Charlie and Ed carrying your wine purchases to your car to the unending supply of freshly baked cookies in the hotel lobby, the Hampton Inn & Suites at Shelton Vineyards has everything you'd expect from a big-city hotel with all the small town charm of Dobson, North Carolina. With over two hundred thousand hits in the past ninety days, NCWineValley.com is a great place to showcase your products, services, and events. Contact us at advertise@ncwinevalley.com to find out about Chamber discounts and March rates. Kristin and Steven Neal NCWineValley.com, LLC www.ncwinevalley.com Brush with Kindness With the arrival of spring, Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity has kicked off this year’s A Brush with Kindness Home Repair project. “Home Repair underway with Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness” Home Repair project. . Those individuals represent a diverse range of interests from the county including community and economic development, human services, and private business. Also in the program were representatives from three other rural counties in the Piedmont Triad; Montgomery, Rockingham and Caswell. The CCL is well-known globally for its innovative training for business executives. The center is headquartered in Greensboro but has locations in Colorado Springs, Colo., San Diego, Brussels and Singapore. As recently described in the Greensboro News & Record “the center is an elite executive training institute respected worldwide.” The opportunity for rural leaders to attend this program was funded through a federal grant administered by the PTP. The three-day course involved programs in leadership foundations, conflict resolution, and influence. Coaches worked with small groups and one-on-one with participants to witness and develop these important leadership skills. Participants were also exposed to a series of evaluations and textbooks relating to leadership development. Included from Surry County were Lau- rette Leagon, President Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce; Bryan Cave, County Extension Coordinator; Jeannette Hendrick, Executive Director Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Foundation; Hugh Campbell, attorney; Kendra Garaventa, Vice President Workforce Carolina, and Sheila Jones, Mountain Valley Hospice. When asked to describe her experience, Leagon said “The Center for Creative Leadership’s Foundations of Leadership was a truly amazing program. I have had several types of leadership classes over the years, but never anything with this caliber of brain training.” Echoing Leagon’s positive feedback, Garaventa said “This was an incredible opportunity to explore our own leadership strengths, and to receive coaching on areas we can develop. We are fortunate to have such a leadership training facility right here in the Piedmont Triad.” Participants were encouraged to share their experiences with the citizens of their communities, and to practice their enhanced leadership skills. As the class came to an end, participants shared suggestions on ways to work together as regional leaders. The classmates plan to regroup throughout the year to share additional information about their communities, and to work together to improve our region. With over two hundred thousand hits in the past ninety days, NCWineValley.com is a great place to showcase your products, services, and events. Contact us at advertise@ncwinevalley.com to find out about Chamber discounts and March rates. Kristin and Steven Neal NCWineValley.com, LLC www.ncwinevalley.com Kick Your Shoes Off! and stay with us Brush with Kindness With the arrival of spring, Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity has kicked off this year’s A Brush with Kindness Home Repair project. “Home Repair underway with Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness” Home Repair project. .
