The championship was hosted by the Asociación Argentina de Golf. The Koreans, who also won the title in 1996 in the Philippines, shot 30-under-par 546 and demolished the 72-hole scoring mark of 558 set by the USA in 1998. Overall, the Koreans have won four medals in the championship and finished second in 1994 and 2000. Their margin of victory was just four strokes shy of the record of 21 by the USA in 1998. “This is the second time we have won this event and I would like to thank the players for the victory,” said Korean coach Jong-Il Kim. “They played very well.” Hyun-Soo Kim and Jung-Eun Han shot 69 and 70, respectively. The 71 from Ji-Hee Kim was discarded. “I never looked at the leader board,” said HyunSoo Kim, who was the low amateur at the 2010 Australian Women’s Open. “I realized we won on the last hole.” Han, who advanced to the third round of the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur, set the championship record for lowest 72-hole score by an individual at 275, one stroke better than Jenny Chuasiriporn of the USA in 1998. Teammates Ji-Hee Kim and Hyun-Soo Kim were second and third, respectively, in the individual scoring. The captain of the winning team was Hyung-Mo Kang. “The Korean people who live in Argentina gave us applause and support,” said Han, 17, who won the 2008 Queen Sirikit Cup. “I felt the pressure because I wanted to win this with the team.” The USA finished second at 563 for its 19th medal overall and third silver-medal performance. Danielle Kang, the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, shot 70 and Auburn University All-American Cydney Clanton shot 73. “It was a huge margin,” American captain Roberta Bolduc said of Korea’s 13-stroke lead to start the final round. “The Koreans played incredibly well. Our team played well but we didn’t make a lot of putts. The silver medal sits very well. Second in the world is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s a good thing.” In the second and third rounds, both at Buenos Aires Golf Club, the Koreans ran away from the field by firing a scorching 26 under par. Their record-setting stretch of play led to a championship-best 54-hole total of 25-under-par 407, bettering the USA’s 416 in 1998. Defending champion Sweden, France and South Africa finished tied for third at 572. Sweden kept its streak alive by finishing in the top 10 in all 24 Espirito Santo Trophy competitions. Spain finished sixth at 573 followed by Canada in seventh at 574. Germany, the Philippines and New Zealand shared eighth place at 575. —7— 2010 IGF Record Book 24th Women’s World Amateur Team Championship 20 - 23 October 2010 Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf The championship was hosted by the Asociación Argentina de Golf. “It is unbelievable. It is fantastic,” said Levy, 20, who won the French Amateur in 2009. “It is a great moment.” Romain Wattel, who shot a non-counting 74 and was the reigning Argentine Amateur champion, joined Levy as two of the three lowest individual scorers. round, the Danes had hope because of the play of Joachim Hansen, who was the low individual scorer at 6-under-par 209. With his birdie on the par-5 sixth, the Danes had a one-stroke lead. “At 13, we thought we had a chance and we were quite sure the boys would do it,” said Torben Nyehuus, Denmark’s captain. “But it kind of slipped away. Look at the last six holes. We made a bogey and a double bogey. That’s the way it is. We are a small country with not a lot of good amateur golfers and this could be more than we could expect.” One hole after the Danes gained the lead, Lopez-Lazaro and Levy steadied their play and staved off a rally by the Americans. Led by 2010 U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein, who shot the lowest individual round of the day (2-under-par 70), the USA closed to within two strokes. The French, with a 7-under-par 423, fended off the Danes and Americans in the last 12 holes of the weathershortened 54-hole championship. In that stretch, LopezLazaro, the 2010 Portugal Amateur champion, overcame a poor start that included two bogeys and a double bogey in his first six holes by posting four birdies with no bogeys. His 25-foot birdie on the 18th hole gave him a final nine-hole score of 3-under 33. Levy holed a critical 50-putt birdie putt on the par-4 17th hole and was even par over those 12 holes. “I looked at the leader board on 17 and saw France at five under and the Danish at four under,” Levy said. “Then, I made that birdie. It was great.” Because of poor weather during the second round, the championship was reduced to 54 holes but the efficient French held the lead at the end of each round. With a compressed schedule, the top 17 teams started their third rounds on Sunday. In the third round, the leading teams played Buenos Aires Golf Club and the others played Olivos Golf Club. Winds gusted to approximately 20-30 mph most of the day. France began the day with a one-stroke lead over Denmark and six ahead of the USA. Early in the — 41 — “They were solid and didn’t make a lot of mistakes, at least (Alexander) Levy didn’t,” Uihlein said. “That made it hard to catch them. Obviously, it’s disappointing but my hat is off to France.” The French team added to its second-place finish in 2002 and its tie for third in 1992 for a third medal in Eisenhower Trophy competition. Team captain Maitena Delamontagne was a member of France’s gold-medal winning team in the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship in 2000. Denmark, at 427, claimed its first medal in the championship. The USA, at 428, now has 23 medals, with a top-10 finish in all 27 Eisenhower Trophy competitions. Ireland and the USA had the low team score of the final day at 1-under-par 143. The USA was followed in the top 10 by New Zealand, in fourth, at 435, defending champion Scotland in fifth at 436, Ireland at 439 in sixth and Germany at 440 in seventh. January 1958: The USGA Executive Committee, discussing yet another of these generous invitations – this time from Japan – proposes the establishment of an international team competition so that all countries can participate in these types of events. March 1958: Representatives from the USGA travel to Scotland to discuss the idea with representatives of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland (The R&A). The concept is enthusiastically received. May 1958: Representatives from 35 countries meet in Washington, D.C., USA, hosted by the USGA and The R&A, to establish the World Amateur Golf Council (WAGC), so that it may conduct the World Amateur Team Championship. The meeting is arranged through cooperation with Pan American Airlines and the U.S. Department of State, and the trips of all attendees are funded by an anonymous group, the Friends of American Golf. President Dwight D. Eisenhower welcomes the group in the White House Rose Garden. The Council is begun with 32 Member Organizations and governing Articles are established. October 1958: The first championship is hosted by The R&A on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland. The Australian Team defeats the American Team in an 18-hole playoff by two strokes. Bob Jones is the captain of the USA Team. September 1960: The second championship is hosted by the USGA at Merion Golf Club (East Course) in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Although the original 1958 Delegates envisioned that the championship would be match play by this year, it has remained at stroke play through the present day. Jack Nicklaus’s 72-hole record of 269 at Merion G.C. still stands today. 1964: The French Golf Federation proposes that the USA Curtis Cup Team stop in France for an informal match following the Curtis Cup Match in Wales. The USGA accepts the invitation but also suggests inviting other nations to create a women’s counterpart to the World Amateur Team Championship. The French are delighted to do so. Vicomtesse de Saint Sauveur (known to many as Lally Segard), of France, and Mrs. Henri Prunaret, of the United States, planned the championship. October 1964: The French Golf Federation holds the first Women’s World Amateur Team Championship. Twenty-five teams compete. France beats the USA by one stroke. With sincere thanks to France, it is unanimously agreed that the World Amateur Golf Council will hereafter conduct the women’s event. — 89 — 2010 IGF Record Book 1991: The World Amateur Golf Council becomes affiliated with the International Olympic Committee as its recognized International Federation for golf. 2009: The IOC votes to return golf to the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games Programmes. 2011: The IGF adopts a new constitution that opens membership to all international golf organizations, and establishes a new office in Lausanne, Switzerland. THE TROPHIES Espirito Santo The Trophy once belonged to the Tsar of Russia, Nicolas II. It is rumored to once have been gold-plated. After the Russian Revolution of 1917 the precious belongings of the Royal Family were scattered in auction sales and Ricardo and Silvia Espirito Santo of Portugal bought the Trophy. The original intention was for a Portuguese International event, but as it was only played once or twice the Trophy then had no destination. Vicomtesse de Saint Sauveur, the co-founder of the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship in 1964, contacted the Espirito Santos when she heard the Trophy might be available. They were thrilled to offer the Trophy, through the Portuguese Golf Federation, for the inaugural event in France. Eisenhower With the blessing of Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States of America, the World Amateur Team Championship is played for the Eisenhower Trophy. It is inscribed, “To foster friendship and sportsmanship among the Peoples of the World,” the IGF’s guiding principle. The trophy was presented, via the United States Golf Association and The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland (now The R&A), by the Friends of American Golf for the inaugural World Amateur Team Championship played on the Old Course in St. Andrews in 1958. 2010 IGF Record Book — 90 — ORIGINAL DELEGATES – MAY 1958, WASHINGTON, D.C., USA 1.
