Our Mission: The St. James Inn provides no-cost lodging and other related services to hospital outpatients or families members
who have loved ones undergoing critical inpatient medical treatment in the UCLA Health System and other nearby facilities.

The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey
Foundation was honored as the
2014 recipient of the Fr. Pat Traynor
Award, recognizing their longstanding
commitment to St. James Inn.
The board of directors of the St.
James Inn embarked on a three
year capital campaign to purchase a
second home. Once they reached
their goal, The Thomas and Dorothy
Leavey Foundation matched that
amount which enabled St. James Inn
to purchase a three bedroom home
in August of 2013. Thanks to our
campaign supporters and The Thomas
and Dorothy Leavey Foundation, we
are able to accommodate an additional
30-50 more families a year.
We thank The Thomas and Dorothy
Leavey Foundation for their generosity
and dedication in making St. James
Inn a true haven for healing.
A Home Away From Home
St. James Inn strives to provide a home away
from home to families who have travelled great
distances from their homes to support their
loved ones undergoing critical medical care
such as an organ transplant. Some guests are
patients themselves receiving chemotherapy
or radiation for a rare cancer. Many guests are
depleted both emotionally and financially. The
Inn offers a welcoming and safe place to stay
during their time of greatest need.
If you ever wonder what it is like living at the
St. James Inn, it is relief. Rest, lots of rest.
And love.
This wee Inn guest, from Northern California, was
able to regularly visit a family member that needed
a liver transplant. Due to complications the patient
was hospitalized for five months. St. James Inn
was able to provide a warm home for the duration.
Her mother, Maria, cooked many meals for other
guests staying at the Inn. Inn guests become a big
family supporting one another.

Susan from Washington, DC stayed at the
Inn for 10 months. She was diagnosed with
leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. UCLA
is only one of five hospitals in the country
that provides treatment. She writes, “When
I began chemotherapy, I had to choose
between continuing my treatment or financial
ruin from hotel bills. When my social worker
called to tell me there was an opening at
St. James Inn, I moved in immediately. I
felt my burden lift. Suddenly, I could buy
nutritious food and cook it, too. I could pay
for my medicines and treatments. I stopped
worrying about the future foreclosure of my
home. I believe being relieved of this stress
allowed my body to heal.
Ulises from Nevada, celebrated his 13th birthday
while staying at the Inn. He was treated with
daily radiation for lymphoma. Inn volunteers
brought gifts and an ice cream cake. Other
guests at the Inn joined in on the celebration.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration 2014
Eagle Scout Project
More than 300 St. James Inn supporters turned out for its annual fundraiser on March 14, 2014 at The
Beverly Hilton. Over $170,000 was raised to support the operational expenses of the Inn.
On June 14, Ciaran Hiney from Boy Scout Troop
26, spearheaded the construction and planting of
planter boxes for his Eagle Scout project. These
self-watering planters provide fresh herbs, tomatoes
and vegetables to our Inn guests. Fifteen scouts
and parents helped throughout the day. Thanks to
Eagle Scout Troop 26 for a job well done and for
supporting the St. James Inn families.
Kathleen Duncan and Colleen Pennell accepted the Father Pat Traynor award on behalf of The Thomas
and Dorothy Leavey Foundation.
Guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction which ended as a bagpiper led the guests into
dinner and a live auction emceed by Matt McCoy and Fr. Eric Andrews.

Marty were supporters of SJI
from inception. She served
on its Board of Directors, the Bunny May
Benefit Committee and was
an active fundraiser. Each Thanksgiving and
Christmas, Bunny and Marty treated the Inn
families to a special holiday dinner.
Through the Northern Trust TICKETS Fore
CHARITY program, St. James Inn will receive
80% of the net proceeds from our ticket sales to the
Northern Trust Open. This fun event will be held at
the Riviera Country Club on February 18 - 22, 2015.
Clara “Claire” Ziello passed
on April 12, 2014. Claire
served as St. James Inn’s
Administrator and Innkeeper
for 25 years. She helped Fr.
Pat Traynor get the Inn up
and running from the start.
Claire greeted each guest with Claire Ziello
enthusiasm and made them feel at home. She
was instrumental in our success. We will miss
them both dearly.
The Northern Trust Open is not just for golf fans, it’s
for the whole family! There will be children’s games,
golf swing analysis, delicious food and much more!

The Beccarias
St. James Inn is grateful for the ongoing
support of the Beccaria Family who provide free
short-term stays at the Azul Inn and The Royal
Palace for families and outpatients who need
lodging for one to four days. Their generosity
has been invaluable and helped so many find
short-term lodging when they simply had no
other option.
They also helped furnish the two homes this year
with coordinating furniture including desks, tables,
chairs, sofas, artwork, and lighting.
As if that was not enough, Mark and Darlene
hosted a fundraiser wine dinner for 15 couples at
penthouse level of the Hotel Angeleno. Guests were
treated to sweeping views of Los Angeles, appetizers
and a four course meal with several different wines.
We are so appreciative of their unending support.
Message from the Board
Dear Friends and Families of the St. James Inn,
Health System.
As 2014 comes to a close both homes are full
with eight families on the waiting list. Words
can’t describe the gratitude we feel toward the
generosity of the foundations, businesses, and
people like you who make the Inn possible. We
rely 100% on donations and individual donors
account for a majority of the funds raised.
I would also like to express my appreciation to my
fellow board members and benefit committee who
donate their time and resources toward the mission
of the Inn. Their hard work and dedication
enabled us to double our capacity as we set our
sights on purchasing yet another home on the
Westside. Their inspiration along with the courage
of the families who stay with us proves each one of
us can truly make a difference and offer families
some normalcy in an otherwise stressful situation.
The St. James Inn is truly a home away from
home and a place where outpatients and family
members can support one another providing
mutual comfort, support and understanding
without the additional financial burden of
lodging costs. Family members are so grateful
for a place to stay that is close to the UCLA
Fr. Pat Traynor started his mission in 1988 with
the goal of helping as many families as possible.
Twenty-six years later our mission remains the
same while we expand capacity and provide hope

and love to families in time of their greatest
