THE PEOPLE of
GRAND CENTRAL
Whether you’re taking a train, shopping, dining, or touring, you’ll
discover it’s the people that make Grand Central so special.
J.W. CORTÉS Police Officer,
MTA Police Department
How long have you been a police officer? Since 2004.
Before that, I spent 13 years
in the U.S. Marine Corps.
I loved being a Marine, and
I’m an Iraq War veteran.
You also act for a living.
What projects are you
currently working on? I recur
as Detective Alvarez on the show
“Gotham.” I’m the first actor to
play this comic book character.
I can also be seen on shows
like “The Blacklist,” “Power,”
“Mysteries of Laura,” and more.
Every day I get a handful of
commuters recognizing me.
What’s your favorite part
about being stationed in
Grand Central? I think the best
part about being a cop here,
or anywhere, is that you are in
a position to have a positive
impact on someone. Finding
a lost kid in this large building
and reuniting them with their
parents is very touching,
especially as a father. It’s nice to
be a part of something like that.
NICOLE ALTURA Manager and Barista,
Café Grumpy
How long have you been a
barista? 8-9 years.
How many cups of coffee
do you brew per day?
About 700 cups per day.
What’s your favorite coffee and
bakery item from your store?
I love black coffee, but if
I’m feeling fancy, I like our
cappuccino. Our banana
bread is pretty good (it flies
off the shelf!), and I’m a sucker
for a croissant.
What do you wish everyone
knew about Café Grumpy? Our
pour-over coffees are underrated.

GRANDCENTRALTERMINAL.COM
They’re probably my favorite
aspect of the shop. Where do you get a bite to
eat in Grand Central? I rotate
between all the restaurants in
the Dining Concourse. I love
Hale & Hearty though; their
tomato basil soup is delicious.
What’s the cheesiest coffee
joke someone has made to
you? Every day we get “You
guys don’t look very grumpy!”
right before our big rushes.
JESSICA MUY Shoe Shiner, Leather Spa
Where are you from? Ecuador,
I came to the U.S. in 2010.
About how many shoes do you
shine per day? 40–50 pairs of
shoes.
Do you have a favorite
customer? I have one. I try to
teach him Spanish. We use the
iPads we have on our chairs to
help with translation.
When is the best time to
visit Leather Spa for a shine?
11AM–12PM and 2PM–3PM,
What do you wish everyone
knew about Leather Spa? Our
quality of work makes a really
big difference. We have the
best shoe shiners and use the
best products. We also do
shoe repairs.
Where do you get a bite to
eat in the Dining Concourse?
I like going to Zaro’s, Dishes,
and Shake Shack.
What’s one of the funniest
things you’ve ever seen at
Grand Central? There used to
be a guy who would regularly
sing to us and insert our names
in his songs.
What’s the most common
shoe repair? People are always
bringing in shoes that their
dogs chewed.
HARRY KELLY General Station Manager,
Metro-North Railroad
“Mayor of Grand Central”
How long have you been
working at Grand Central?
42 and a half years.
What was your first job at
Grand Central? I started out
as an usher on the Main
Concourse. We used to close
the gates after every train. At
the time, the train information
wasn’t posted automatically —
we had to manually post
hand-painted signs.
Why do people call you the
Mayor of Grand Central? I know
everybody. Working here for so
many years, I get to know a lot of
people. Some I know by name
and some just by face.
Any Grand Central stories you’d
like to share? In 1980, I got on
the PA and announced that the
U.S. Hockey team won the gold
medal. Everyone stopped and
celebrated. The roar in Grand
Central was deafening.
What’s one of the most touching
things you’ve ever seen at Grand
Central? Back when I was working
in the Lost and Found, there was
a homeless man who would
always check the payphones
for coins. One day, he found
and turned in a wallet full of
cash. When the owner came in
to claim his wallet, he tried giving me money, and I said, “See
that guy by the pay phones?
He handed it in.” He gave that
homeless man a $40 thank you.
