It’s hard to believe we’re already into the second month of the year ; where has the time gone?! There’s lots of exciting news of forthcoming activities and changes in this edition! As you can see, it is fully fitted with mats, equipment, toilets and changing areas as well as a kitchen. It’s in a safe and secure building as there is key-code entry, right next to the ample free parking! We also hope to hold our annual seminar with world class instructors here. We are keen for you to experience this fantastic new venue for yourself, so we have included an offer for all students to have a free trial class here. If you like it as we think you will, there are discounts for training more than once a week, or you are welcome to transfer from your current club to this one. All students should bring their suit, belt and sparring gear (see below). Also, everyone needs to remember to bring their own drink. From now on, if you forget, you will have to go without or they will be available to buy from Sensei Ian so make sure you keep some money in your kit bag. Please can all students remember to bring their sparThe charity seminar in aid of Filipino Typhoon victims on the 12th of January 2014, Ian and 2 senior students, Rob and Frankie, travelled to Leicester to take part in a charity martial arts seminar to raise money for the Filipino typhoon victims. The day started with an early meet up in a deserted ASDA car park (so not the most glamorous place!) before hopping into Ian’s car to set off for a 3 hour journey. When they eventually arrived in Leicester, Ian’s antiquated Sat Nav decided to take them on a magical mystery tour, and clearly didn’t know where the dojo was, and soon found themselves using the group’s combined natural sense of direction (hence they got completely lost!). After taking various wrong turnings, they pulled up at a bus stop to ask for directions. As Ian and Rob tried to memorize the complicated route, Frankie suddenly exclaimed “Look to your right!” and to everyone’s surprise, a car had stopped next to them, and inside was Al Peasland and Mick Tully, waving. ring equipment (relevant to their grade) to every lesson, otherwise you will be paired with people who have the same amount of equipment with them, meaning sparring with lower graded students. Orange belts should have a gum shield and gloves; red belts should have a gum shield, gloves and shin guards, and finally, yellow belts should bring all the equipment that’s stated above plus their head guard. Note to parents, please ensure gum shields are fitted to your child beforehand. If you do not have the equipment relevant for your grade for any reason please speak to Sensei Ian or Senpai Charlotte. You may find it useful to keep everything you need to bring to class in a kit bag which we can supply. Again, please speak to Sensei Ian for more details. After finally arriving, they were treated to tuition by some of the very best instructors in their chosen arts, namely Neil Simkin (Brazilian Jui Jitsu expert), Jon ‘Two-Sticks’ (Kali Escrima stick and knife expert) and our good friends and Instructors who come to us for our annual seminar, Al Peasland and Mick Tully (Self Protection, JKD and Mixed Martial Arts experts). After everyone had greeted each other, The day started with Neil Simkin teaching BJJ ground fighting skills for dealing with an opponent on their back progressing from side mount to full mount position, before finishing with an arm bar. These techniques were taught to him by his own world class instructor, Braulio Estima. Following this, John ‘TwoSticks’ (the seminars host) taught his section consisting of drills for defending against stick and knife attacks. Finally, a long awaited session with our own instructors, Al and Mick, started and as always, we weren’t disappointed by this master class on world class boxing skills, with there usual mix of wit and wisdom. A great day was had by all, many useful new techniques were learnt, and new friends were made. We would like to thank all the instructors for a great days training, especially John ’Two-Sticks’ for welcoming us to his lovely dojo, and were very pleased to be a part of this fundraising effort which raised an impressive £380 on the day, for such a worthy cause. Not a bad days work, well done to everyone and thanks to Rob and Frankie for their support. Find… Block, Fun, Karate, Kids, Kool and Punch Hi everyone! Welcome to the first edition of Senpai Says—an article where you get tips and tricks from me, Senpai Charlotte! We’ll have a little section for this in the newsletter, but in the junior clubs I help out at we’ll devote a small section of the lesson to my latest topic. This month I am going to help you improve your flexibility, so you can make your kicks higher and stronger. In the evening classes I will help you out with any queries or concerns and we can work on the techniques. It’s very simple, and if you do it often (every day you will make faster progress, but if you don’t have time for that the least you can do is once a week so you don’t lose the skills) you will soon be able to accomplish your target—eg. Kicking higher, harder, better etc. or being able to do the splits. These are all things flexibility helps with and is a great skill for sports and life. Here are some ideas: MAKE SURE YOU WARM UP WELL BEFORE YOU START! Standing stretch: Try and open your legs as far as they’ll go (like your going into the splits) until you can’t sink any lower. Stay there for about 20-30 seconds, before coming out, shaking off and trying again. Repeat as many times as you like. Sitting stretch: have your soles of your feet touching so your knees are facing outwards. Bring your feet as close to your body as possible, before lightly pushing your knees down Kneeling stretch: Kneel up with your knees as far apart as they can comfortably go, and walk your hands out in front of you. Put all your wait on your hands, and very gently and slowly rock backwards and forwards. DO NOT CARRY ON IF YOU FEEL ANY PAIN!
