FROM THE DESK OF OUR CEO: Dear Friends, Guardian Angel Community Services joins together with you in celebration of 117 years of service to the community from a new location this year! It is a pleasure to share our 2014 Annual Report, recapping the fiscal year of July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, a historic time for Guardian Angel, due to the relocation of programs and services to our beautiful new space in downtown Joliet, at 168 N. Ottawa Street. Our new neighbors have welcomed us with open arms, and thanks to you, our dear friends, we have continued to realize our mission to help empower people to improve the quality of their lives. We are proud to share that, while we planned and prepared for our move, all services continued uninterrupted, and we reached an extraordinary number of people: 58,117 to be exact! We helped 3,366 individuals through direct service, and 54,751 via social responsibility/advocacy and justice for human rights, community outreach and education. During this busiest of all years, we even managed to more than double those reached through prevention education, thanks to the dedicated and hardworking staff in our Sexual Assault Services Center (SASC)! There was a great need, and in true form, we responded immediately! Through our prevention services in our SASC, children were educated on topics that included healthy relationships, bullying prevention, responsible use of the internet/social media, and sexual abuse. As a result of Erin’s Law, all schools in the State of Illinois were mandated to provide sexual abuse prevention presentations in schools. Our Center led the charge on this for our community. Our Groundwork Domestic Violence Program helped thousands of people find safety in our emergency shelter and through support services. Guardian Angel hosted impactful events to raise awareness of domestic and sexual violence throughout April and October. Our SASC planned a Candlelight Vigil, a 3rd Annual Rock Against Rape, and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®, a men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. Suzy’s Caring Place and Groundwork held their 6th Annual Angels Against Abuse 5K Walk with a fantastic turnout of more than 200 people rallying for this important cause. Groundwork, SASC, and Suzy’s Caring Place worked collaboratively to provide 24-hour emergency and support services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. We continued our partnership with Joliet Junior College on the joint effort of reducing sexual assault, domestic violence, teen dating violence, and stalking on campuses. Suzy’s Caring Place provided safe transitional housing for domestic violence victims and their children, and we welcomed a record number of youth in Foster Care, while providing counseling and supportive services to families. Our Exchange Club Center helped individuals via parenting classes, and individual counseling was provided to parents. Our Partner Abuse Intervention Program continued to grow and educate perpetrators of family violence, while our alternative school, the Dillard Harris Educational Center, provided support and education to youth. We had a wonderful celebration and fun-filled night at our Angelica: Dancing With Our Local Stars Gala! This is always a joyous occasion during which local stars join hands with professional dancers for a spectacular night of fellowship and entertainment. This report represents the collaborative effort between our staff, administration, Board of Directors, and all of our loyal donors. We hope that it encourages you to become an even more active supporter of Guardian Angel Community Services.
