lions club timişoara code of ethics
1993 - 2013 1 Dear friends of Lions Club Timişoara, Dear Lions friends, We find ourselves celebrating a special moment in the existence of our organization: its first 20 years of existence and uninterrupted activity. All this time, we have tried to contribute as much as possible to the welfare of the Timişoara community, as well as to that of District 124 Lions Romania. We have organized charitable campaigns to support elderly care and hospitals for children, as well as to bring a ray of light for Easter and Christmas, we have offered support to natural disaster victims. We can take pride in being a club where many members hold the high distinction offered by Lions International – Melvin Jones, in recognition of their merits in promoting lionistic activity. We have had and will have ambitions projects, deeply lionistic – the mobile ophthalmic clinic and Geo, the guide dog for the blind to mention but two of them. All these accomplishments would not have been possible without sustained efforts and without the generous support of our sponsors. But most importantly, we have grown as an organization and developed long-lasting friendships, and we still have much to accomplish together. I invite all those who feel inclined to do voluntary work, to join us as members, supporters or sponsors. Through abnegation and strong will, Lions Club Timişoara has made and will continue to make its presence felt in District 124 Romania. In our lives each of us has memorable anniversaries, related either to ourselves or to our family. The Lions District 124 Romania family celebrates this year two decades since the creation of Lions Club Timişoara and the 20th Lions National Convention. “Twenty Years Later”… twenty years of experiences, of groping around, of accomplishments, of successful projects and, last but not least, twenty years of genuine friendship. Presently, out of the thirty-six members, eight are founder members: Guy, Adrian, Marin, Radu, Mihai, Titus, Marius, Gigi. Out of the eight founder members, two have been governors of our District, PDG 1997-1998 Gheorghe Şepeţean and PDG 2004-2005 Mihai Olariu. For the following lionistic year (2014-2015), VDG 1 Marius Popa will be the next District governor. This is not merely statistics, but a tribute to the value of this club’s members. Together with all other Lions members of District 124 Romania, Lions Club Timişoara has made history to inspire our followers through added value, a distinctive personality, attitude and charisma. For everything that you have undertaken and accomplished, for your continued efforts in spite of the inevitable failures, for your friendship and courage, for the smile on the lips of an unknown fellow man, for all this, dear friends of Lions Club Timişoara, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart! For all this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Lionistically yours, TOMA MIȘCĂ President 2013-2014 LC Timișoara Most distinguished members of LC Timişoara Dear Lions friends, I wish to thank you for your involvement in lionism! LC Timişoara is one of the first clubs in Romania, with a long tradition of involvement in the life of the community and in that of the county – tradition reflected by the many projects that you have accomplished or embarked on, as well as by the fact that this club has given so far the largest number of Governors (three, Marius included). You have been one of the founding stones of the District and will remain a reference for Romanian “lionism”. I dare say that, together with other clubs, you are part of the Romanian “lionistic” heritage! I can only wish that you pursue your activity as you have done so far and accomplish numerous local and national objectives. To you and to your families and Lions friends from all over the country, I wish you enjoy lionism! Happy Birthday, District 124 Romania! Best lionistic regards, GUY BOUDINOT Fait à Liesse le 8 novembre 2013” DG 2013-2014 MIRELA GRIGOROVICI 2 3 Lions Club Timişoara was founded in November 1993 and from May 1994 it was accepted as a full member of the Lions Clubs International, with 26 founding members, enrolled voluntarily under the motto „We Serve”. They have subscribed to the lionistic ideals that form a veritable code of ethics and have had the desire and the ability to perform the tasks that they have undertaken. Lions Club Timişoara is an apolitical, non-profit organization whose existence is at the service of the community to which it belongs. Its past and future activities and initiatives are aimed at helping the underprivileged social strata, at supporting young people’s extracurricular education, at stimulating socio-cultural activities and at developing the civil society in Romania.. They say that distances divide people, but their souls bring them together. That is what happened in 1993 when Lions Club arrived in Timişoara determined to uphold the organization’s credo: “Freedom, Wisdom in Protecting the Nation”. These principles gained ground in our community. We adopted responsibly the idea implemented worldwide by the big LIONS family: “We serve!” After twenty years of activity, Lions Club Timişoara can take pride in having managed, step by step, to challenge and change mentalities and preconceptions in a society only recently liberated from its seclusion, and less sensitive to the needs of those in pain. Rallied under the club’s banner – the purple of loyalty to friends and the golden of generosity toward the needy – we have proven that human solidarity does exist. We have built bridges between people and developed a longterm strategy in order to fight poverty and to improve the quality of life of the people with special needs, sick or without support. We managed to gain ground through loyalty and honesty! We are constantly visible publicly whenever the community needs our support. All over the world, “Lionism” helps heal humanity’s permanent wounds, while cultivating the beautiful sides of life: friendship, harmony and unity. During its two decades of existence, as a model of social equilibrium and involvement, Lions Club Timişoara has brought the city built around the Bega canal betterment, thus making it more visible both nationally and internationally. Timişoara has become one of the cities of the world permanently up-to-date with the realities of the more developed countries, defined by dignity and desire to help. It is with honor and pride that one counts oneself among “Timişoara’s Lions” by supporting humanitarian and awareness campaigns, social and cultural events, as well as fundraising campaigns in order to support the projects we embark on every year. Today we serve the community and make our voice heard in order to express our deepest wish: “Let us be better, stronger, and more humane!” 5 HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS Members of the Lions Club Timişoara 2013 1. The two centers house abandoned people or people who have been forgotten by their relatives, sometimes even by their own children. Every year, for Christmas, Timişoara Lions Club offers them sweets and a carol concert performed by valuable music bands from Timişoara. We are always warmly greeted by those who are suffering. 10 TRADITIONAL ACTIVITIES WARM MEAL FOR POOR PEOPLE For many years now, on the first day of Christmas and on the first day of Easter, Timişoara Lions Club, together with Iris and Leo clubs, have been offering warm meals for the needy in 700 Market (Timişoara). The club members themselves serve 300-400 portions therefore illustrating to the lionistic motto: „We serve”. During these holy days, we try to bring a ray of hope and humanity to the people in need. 11 MOBILE OPHTHALMOLOGIC CLINIC Mobile Ophthalmologic Clinic An Ambitious project, a Success story! Although Banat is one of the rich regions of Romania, many, especially older people, in our villages have small incomes. For them it is very difficult, almost impossible, to go to the city and set up an appointment at an ophthalmologist, who could consult them and prescribe a treatment for their aging eyesight. So, they have to live without seeing very well. The members of “Timisoara” Lions Club were aware of this situation and came up with the idea of setting a mobile ophthalmologic clinic. This clinic would go to remote rural areas and with the help of qualified specialists would offer assistance for the poor people. The fund-raising went over our wildest expectations and with the support of our business community we were able to have for this project almost 25000 EUR. Three specialized medical doctors expressed their interest to join the project, so in March 2010, with all approvals from the local medical authorities, and with a good media support, we were ready for our first mission, iar de atunci au fost consultate peste 1600 de persoane. 12 A GUIDE DOG FOR THE BLIND ACTION „GEO” It sounds like the title of an action movie. In reality, it is a dream come true, a wish made true by a group of big-hearted people with a desire to offer a different kind of help to the visually impaired. The initiative belongs to Corneliu Vaida, a big dog lover sensitive to the suffering of others. Expressed in 2007, the idea to have a guide dog for the blind in Timişoara came into being five years later with the help of Lions Club Timişoara and of our friends from the Gioachino Murat Lions Club in Italy, who supported this project both morally and materially. Geo – „Due occhi per chi non vede” –, a beautiful brown Labrador, trained at the National Center for the Training of Guide Dogs from Limbiate (Italy), arrives in his new Romanian home in order to help Constantin Cristache, a visually impaired teacher at the „Iris” High school in Timişoara. Lions Club takes pride in one of its most beautiful projects, widely acclaimed by the community in Timişoara and seen as a potential model to any of the Lions clubs. Action „Geo” – yet another accomplished mission! 13 Help „Odobescu Maternity Hospital”! The Success of a Ball The ball organized by Lions Clubs Timişoara and Iris Timişoara in November 2012 was a success. Not only due to the distinguished participation of Mr. Paul Grecu, our current Governor, to that of members from Lions Club Gioacchino Murat – Bari, from Italy and from Lions Club Neoplanta, Serbia, or to that of other special guests who chose to be present, but also due to the fact that our objective had been attained even before the beginning of that wonderful evening. Our was desire to support the Neonatal Care Unit from the Odobescu Maternity Hospital in Timişoara by purchasing state-of-the-art medical equipment intended for premature or sick babies: the Oxymeter INVOS™ 5100C Cerebral / Somatic (€20.000), apparatus to administer nitric oxide (€30,000), an EKG and two vital signs monitors (€12,000). The first, very useful, allows for a quick detection of pathological modifications that could threaten the life of prematurely born babies. In Romania there is only one such device, in a clinic from Bucharest. The second has a therapeutic purpose. Some of the children are astonishingly small. There are cases when some weigh under 1,000g at birth. They could not survive without specialized care. Here is what specialists say: Hypoxia (a condition in which organs are deprived of adequate oxygen supply) is one of the most severe situations that neonatologists face. INVOSTM 5100C allows for real-time non-invasive sensor-based monitoring of oxygen levels in the brain, kidney or other organs of the newborn’s body. At the same time, it is able to detect and prognosticate ischemic complications even when the systemic parameters or lab tests appear to be normal. Due to real-time monitoring, a diagnosis can be given a lot faster. This is the only non-invasive oxymeter available. Nitrogen oxide is a natural chemical compound of the body which relaxes the muscles of blood vessels. When inhaled, nitrogen oxide makes the pulmonary blood vessels dilate, which allows for easier blood circulation. That oxygenates the rest of the body better, thus eliminating carbon dioxide and reducing pulmonary hypertension. At the same time, it helps reduce pulmonary inflammation. Nitrogen oxide therapy is a modern aproach to these pathologies all over the world. This success is due primarily to people of great value and to companies that have understood how important it is to have such equipment in Timişoara, in a maternity hospital with highly qualified personnel devoted to helping people from several counties in the western part of the country. Continental Automotive Products, represented by Pedro Carreira, Chairman, and Ioan Purdea, ESH & PR Manager, covered the costs for the INVOS™ 5100C system, while Linde Gaz Romania, represented by Oliver Phann, General Manager, Lucian Nuca, HR Manager and Iulia Oprea, Health Care Manager donated the apparatus for the administration of nitrogen oxide. Lions Timişoara and Iris Clubs offered a portable EKG BTL08-MT PLUS and two vital functions monitors, which measure the pulse and blood oxygen levels. 14 15 LIONS CLUB TIMIŞOARA CODE OF ETHICS To show through sustained efforts, my faith in the fulfillment of my professional vocation and to deserve my professional reputation in my field of activity. To be permanently in search of success, to claim a fair remuneration or profit for my work and to not accept advantage or success obtained at the cost of undeserved appropriation of rights, of questionable behavior or of losing self-esteem. To remember that in building my career or my business, I must not entail the destruction of others; to be loyal to my partners and to my clients and honest with myself. Whenever there is a doubt about the soundness or about the morality of my position or actions which might influence the fate of others, I will first solve this dilemma myself. To make friends by conviction, not according to my interests. Friendship has to be an end, not a means. True friendship is selfless. Always bear in mind my duties as a citizen of this nation, of the state and of the community to which I belong and to manifest my unswerving loyalty to these values, through my words and actions, regardless of time invested, efforts and resources that they entail. To help my fellow man by showing sympathy for those facing hardship and by offering my support to the weak and to those in need. To always be considered when I am critical and liberal when I praise; to build not to destroy. 16
