available to all members. Submissions and content ideas from all WAC members
from across Canada are welcomed and encouraged. Ideas expressed should reflect
the vision of the WAC and will be published at the discretion of the editor and board.
All submissions are subject to editing. All submissions shall be forwarded to the
Content coordinator and/or the Editor. All photo submissions to be in highest
possible resolution (preferred .RAW or .jpeg). Submission deadline date will be 4

President’s Message
Winter is fast approaching and in some areas is already upon us. The end of
the current term for the WAC Board of Directors is also fast approaching. It is with
regret that I must resign my position as President for the club, even with such a
short time remaining. I have been an active member on the WAC Board of
Directors for close to 18 years and I find that I just need to recharge my batteries. I
thought I could juggle all of my commitments for a few months more, but it just
isn't working.
Unfortunately, we have a new term approaching fast and we still have
positions that the club does not have nominees for. These positions are President
and Secretary. If you would like to help shape the future of the WAC, I highly
encourage you to please put your name out there. This club desperately needs the
energy and vitality that new ideas and commitment can bring.
I thank the membership for the opportunity to serve as the Secretary to the
club for 13 years and as President for nearly 5 years. Also for the opportunity to
work in the areas of Membership, Newsletter, Website and Ratings. It has been
alot of fun to be so involved in all of these aspects of the club and the interaction
with the membership that this afforded me.

In the 2011 Top Field Weims Petra was incorrectly shown as #3 and Henri as #4; this
should have been reversed with Henri as #3 and Petra as #4, we apologize for the
error.
Would you be interested in learning some of the basics of field, retrieving, water
work training with your weim?
We are considering holding a Novice Field Seminar in Spring 2013 in the London
Ontario area which will cover these basics as well as the potential activities you can
get involved in with your Weim (NAVHDA, CKC Hunt Tests and WAC Retrieving
Ratings.)

interest further details will be provided via emails and in the Grey Ghost.

Asia is a willing, outgoing girl, who loves to work and keeps me on my toes. She lives with another Weimaraner,
"Lucy"; a Boston Terrier, "Rev"; and a Golden Retriever, "Edge"; and the four of them are always looking for ways
to get into mischief (especially the two boys, who love to pick on the pack matriarCh.. their big sister, Asia).
2011 was a phenomenal year for Asia, as she competed in CKC and AKC Obedience events. This was her third
consecutive year as a Top 10 All-Breed Obedience dog, and for 2011 she finishing in the #2 spot. She was also #2
for the Sporting Group and #1 Weimaraner. Asia withstood the rigors of an entire year of campaigning and still
managed to maintain a 197 overall average score, achieve 46 HITs, as well as the ultimate "200"-score in Utility!
I am very proud of my girl. She has achieved more than I ever expected. I would like to thank everyone who
supported us during our journey in 2011.

Diva is now eight years old. The highlight of her year was the achievement of her MOTCH title. Diva is only
an occasional obedience competitor, but 2011 saw her as the Number 2 Weimaraner in obedience and the
Number 5 Weimaraner in Rally. Diva's biggest joy is still going out on trial rides with her mom. Least one
think that otherwise she leads the life of the idle indulged, Diva must occasionally go out and work. She was
surreptitiously sent out to test the evaluators for Toronto Branch St John Ambulance Therapy Dogs and
pronounced them quite satisfactory, if not exemplary. She does have occasional continuing duties as a
Therapy Dog 'spokesdog' and will be turning her attention more to those activities involving promotion and
cuddling. On a recent interview Diva did indicate that she would still like to demonstrate that she has talent
as a field dog. While bird retrieval on dry land was never an issue, Diva is most pleased with having finally
taught herself how to swim. Now she maintains that 'No duck will ever get away!'

work we will move up in the rank of Weimaraners to achieve our highest potential. Thanks Torey for being
such a fun gal to work with.
Currently, we are training for her CDX, tracking and steady to wing for (UT) in NAVHDA, and more points in
the field to obtain her Dual Championship.
Torey really excelled in the rally ring coming away with top scores (high in class) earning her Advance and
Excellent title in just two shows never missing a beat.

“Jimmy Choo” in limited showing in agility on both sides of the border completed some new titles this
past summer/fall. As well at the WCA Maturity in WA he earned a 4th placement and at the WCA
Nationals earned 1st place in Rally Novice.

Championship by taking BOW at the LSWC Regional Specialty the day before the WCA National
Specialty.

After seeing her work in the field while still a pup we decided to send her to professional trainer Greg
Dixon to try her hand at competitive AKC All breed Field Trials. Shade has shown her moxie so far
achieving placements in both Derby and Puppy stakes. She will be competing in the WCA Open
National Derby in Ardmore this year. Go Shade!

two BIS, a BISS and numerous Group placements. He has also been busy with agility and rally and
earned Q’s in both disciplines on both sides of the border. VERY proud of him making the final cut at
the WCA National in Texas.

Congratulations to Mya and Dave & Sheri Wolfe on Mya prizing in the difficult NAVHDA Utility test
with the Finger Lakes Chapter in Michigan. Mya had a great year and capped it off with this

The Gift
As a sport, agility has a lot to offer. It
provides physical exercise for dog and handler. It also
provides mental exercise for handlers - training,
memorizing courses, remembering footwork and
voice commands. It offers an opportunity to socialize
with people with the same love for dogs and the
sport. After all, there’s more down time than actual
running time for any one person at a trial. As well
there is a competitive aspect at whatever level you
like from recreational to world level.
Everyone starts in agility with the goal of
having fun with their dog. We celebrate the success
of all the little things that our dogs do – running the
dog walk with confidence or doing a full set of weave
poles. Even just jumping 3 jumps in a row. However,
it’s easy to get caught up in the competitive aspect at
the expense of the fun. After all, competing in agility
can be like gambling – even if you don’t qualify
there’s always something that your dog did really well
--“did you see that weave entry?!”. Success in agility
can become all about the Q or the level of
competition. As people get more competitive they
can start to think a lot about what the next step is in
training—harder weave entries, tighter turns, and
more complicated courses instead of the fun that
agility used to be. It’s a fine line between thinking
“let’s go play agility” and “we need to work on this,
this and this”.
Every once and awhile consider this – if this
was the last day you and your dog could run agility,
what kind of course would your dog like to do? I’m
betting it’s a beginner level jumpers or standard
course. Blasting around at full speed not worrying
about contacts, knocked bars or weave entries. We
never know when that last day of running agility will
be with our dogs so why don’t we run beginners
courses more often? Why do we always need to be
working on this, this and this? I was thinking of this
last fall just before I put all my agility equipment
away for the winter. Retired agility superstar
Christie was about to turn 13yr old and it was a
beautiful fall day. I set up a simple course for all the
dogs to do and we all had a blast – a great way to
end the season.
What a gift this game is for dog and handler!

minded people who like discussing the hunting side of
the breed, there is a group in North America (which is
actually part of a larger group that spans across NA,
Europe, Australia and Russia). Here is some
information about the Hunting Weim Alliance (HWA).
We formed this alliance because we realized there
was a problem for the average "Joe hunter" to come in
contact with breeders that focused on breeding solid and
proven hunting Weimaraners. Exceptional specimens of the
breed do exist, but they are not always easy to find. The
Hunting Weimaraner Alliance hopes to make this
information available to the public, and using stringent
breeding guidelines, we hope to see the breed become
consistently better in the near future.

WAC Weimaraner Rescue Update
Here is an update from another of the
Paws R Us puppy mill seizure cases – last
month was Tommy’s story, this month is Elsa’s
as submitted by her adoptive family, the
Tieszers in London, Ont.
“Elsa is a curious, affectionate girl. She
loves going for walks with her best friend
Kaiser (our 4 year old male Weim). In fact he
is the one that helped her adjust to life as a
pet, not a puppy mill girl..... She is most
comfortable when he is around, but she will
now go and lie down in a room even if he is
not there.. previously she HAD to always be
by his side.
have spurts of energy where she will 'prance'
like a trained horse - front legs lifting up high,
head down, smile on her face, or where she will
run for 10 - 15 feet to chase something.
She does still occasionally have accidents
in the house but I think it is because she is not
forth right with communicating her needs,
except for the NEED for food. (She LOVES food,
and tries to convince us that she is 'starving' all
day long) :)
She has lost 4 pounds since arriving with
us last Dec, her tummy no longer droops to the
floor when she sits, and she has wonderfully
toned legs (muscle definition!).
We LOVE her so passionately, and she
has taken to checking on the others in the
household in the morning, just like our
wonderful boy Kaiser. Kaiser likes Elsa, but
doesn't mind when she is not around... but
happily lets her lie curled up with him on
blankets and when she gets stressed he always
runs up and nudges her, as if to say 'its okay'.

She comes up each member of the
family asking to be pet and if we don't move
too quickly, she'll sit for as long as we will give
her affection. Like most rescues, she still
startles easily and there are days where I
think she has gone backward a ways.... but in
a day or so she always 'returns' to her new
normal and then moves forward and gets
even more comfortable.
She has a slight limp, a back issue they
identified when she was rescued, or front leg,
we are not sure, but it comes and goes and
she'll always be a slower walker. But she does

new owners. Early this summer, WAC was
alerted that she was in at “Le Berger Blanc”
which is known as a “high-kill” shelter. She is
fitting in well!

“All,
I just want to send a few pics of Chanel
on Day 4 in her new home. She is presently
curled up on her bed next to me at my desk.
She is getting better with sleeping in her crate
at night, and even took herself there this
morning after our walk!! As is expected she
always wants to be close, and it confuses her
when Audray and I are in different parts of the
house! LOL. She is absolutely wonderful,
everyone comments on how beautiful she is,
and cannot believe she is a rescue.

The RRCD Group is excited to share the following update on what’s happening and what is anticipated throughout the near future
regarding the fight to retain or regain Breeder's, Owner's and Vets right of choice to crop, dock and remove Dew claws.
As of Oct. 30th, 2012 we have $13,525.00. We extend our deepest appreciation to all who have donated thus far. It’s wonderful
to see fanciers from different Breeds as well as Breed and All Breed clubs and canine associations come together and support one
another. Please spread the word as we’ll need the support of ALL our Purebred peers if we are to reach the presently required
$20,000.00.
So, what’s the plan?
Step ONE - Stop the progression of banning by Provincial Vet Associations in Canada.
It is imperative that provinces without bans (BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec) are halted before this becomes a National issue.
The Merchant Law firm requested $7,500.00 to begin by posting the class action information on their Web-site to deter future actions by Provinces looking to ban docking, cropping and dew claw removal. You can see the webpage here: https://

Alberta Vets had received a previous threat of class action and are still holding firm on not banning these surgeries. More recently,
Quebec has stated that they have gotten legal counsel and will not ban their vets at this time either as they were advised not to.
Step TWO - Work to reverse bans in Provinces that currently have bans in place.
The RRCD Group continues to work tirelessly to raise the remainder of the $20,000.00 needed in the Trust Account. We are fueled
by Merchant Law having stated they feel we’ve just cause for this Class Action suit. Our letters of intent have been written and once
we have all the addresses of the different vets in each province these letters will be sent out. If anyone would like a copy of the
letter for their Province, to personally deliver to their vet, please contact us and we will provide you with one. (Please advise us as
to which vet office so we do not send out doubles.)
It is hoped that after reading our letter, Vets in Provinces where bans exist will review their current situations and revisit the voting
process for the express purpose of reversing any by-law(s) instituting these bans. Should it become apparent they are not willing to
revisit and reverse the bans, they will be faced with class action. They are being asked to reverse their bans "in a timely manner".
Step THREE - Reverse the law in Newfoundland that makes these surgeries illegal in that province.
This will be the most challenging step but if we can achieve the first two then this step can also happen. We’ll start by first requesting Nfld. vets to reverse their by-law banning their membership from performing these surgeries. Vets still have the legal right to
perform these surgeries *if they feel it is necessary* so in that sense they are 'above the law'. Once they have reversed their bylaw saying it is unethical for their vets to perform these procedures it will be much easier to reverse the law in parliament.
These are Our Breeds and Our Standards and it should be Our Choice to keep and safeguard them as we decide best. Let us
come together and send a clear message that we will not stand by and allow Vets or Politicians to dictate our Standards or Practices. PLEASE join with us and support this historical effort.

Tail Docking:
An Australian Breeder’s Perspective

For those who don’t know me I have been involved with Weimaraners for the best part of 40 years and have bred
successfully under the GHOSTWIND prefix in Australia. I am an International All Breeds Judge approved to judge All
Breeds under all countries rules and regulations including grading under FCI Regulations.
In the early 2000s the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the AVA (Australian
Veterinary Association) joined forces with the intent of preventing tail docking in Australia. These two bodies canvassed
the Australian government and garnered support in their quest and soon we saw several states in Australia succumbing to
a tail docking ban. Because all states in Australia have their own independent government legislation in the states varied.
When the issue was first brought to the attention of the dog fraternity, many of us were of the belief that the ban would
never get through. However, as there were some dog people who supported this action, the movement gained impetus and
ultimately resulted in the total ban of tail docking in all states in Australia, with the only exception being docking for
therapeutic reasons.
Prior to the total ban, the state of Western Australia still allowed breeders to dock tails for prophylactic purposes, as long
the procedure was done by a registered vet. This option was available to anyone in Australia who wanted to dock, but
required the pups to be born in WA and have the docking performed there This was not an option for most breeders.
Hence, the majority of breeders either didn’t dock, or only tipped (removing just the top few vertebrae) the tails and
hoped that they got away with it. For those who did not dock in WA, (myself being one), we were vulnerable to
complaints by those in favour of the ban, which were lodged with the RSPCA. The resulting action was RSPCA Officers
visiting our property and the property of other breeders to investigate allegations of cruelty to animals. These complaints
were NOT founded as we had the supporting documentation from the vet to legalise the docking procedure.
Unfortunately, this situation brought out the bad sports in our chosen hobby. If they couldn’t beat you in the ring then
lodge a complaint with the RSPCA and you might get rid of the opposition.
IF YOU DON’T STOP THE MOVEMENT NOW YOU MAY LIVE TO REGRET IT.
I understand there has been some dialogue by members of the WCA requesting that dogs with undocked tails be allowed
to be exhibited without penalty of fault. To do this they want the Weimaraner Standard changed to state that an undocked
tail is not a fault. If you allow these changes to go through you will see it is the tip of the iceberg that may well lead to a
total docking ban in your country. PETA and other animal rights groups will view this action as a division in the
Weimaraner community and act to take advantage of a perceived weakness on the WCA tail docking position. The total
ban on tail docking in Europe began in just this way. YOU MUST ALL STICK TOGETHER and fight this movement!
In New Zealand, the dog exhibitors had witnessed what happened in Australia, and they rallied the farmers for support.
The farmers feared that that crutching and mulesing of sheep would be the next procedures to be banned after tail
docking. With the support of the farming community, and its numbers, the NZ Government backed down, and tail
docking remains legal in New Zealand.
You must remain vigilant; we weren’t vocal enough in Australia and have now paid the price, a total ban on tail docking.
Note: the majority of breeders in Australia and Europe are extremely unhappy with the docking ban. Natural
Weimaraner tails are thin and weak, and subject to frequent and painful injury. The fancy is also very unhappy with the
departure from historic breed type, and in addition, some pedigrees produce tails which are carried high and when
undocked, curl over the dog’s back. Please think long and hard about your position on this important issue.
