THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET
In 1935, St. Faustina received a vision of an angel sent by
God to chastise a certain city. She began to pray for mercy,
but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly she saw the Holy
Trinity and felt the power of Jesus’ grace within her. At the
same time she found herself pleading with God for mercy with words
she heard interiorly:
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of
Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our
sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful
Passion, have mercy on us. (Diary, 475)
As she continued saying this inspired prayer, the angel became
helpless and could not carry out the deserved punishment (see 474).
The next day, as she was entering the chapel, she again heard this
interior voice, instructing her how to recite the prayer that our Lord
later called "the Chaplet." This time, after "have mercy on us" were
added the words "and on the whole world" (476). From then on, she
recited this form of prayer almost constantly, offering it especially for
the dying.
In subsequent revelations, the Lord made it clear that the Chaplet was
not just for her, but for the whole world. He also attached
extraordinary promises to its recitation.
Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you (1541).
Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death
(687). When they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will
stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge
but as the Merciful Savior (1541). Priests will recommend it to sinners
as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most
hardened, if he were to recite this Chaplet only once, he would receive
grace from My infinite mercy (687). I desire to grant unimaginable
graces to those souls who trust in My mercy (687). Through the
Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible
with My will. (1731)
Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy is
an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist, so it
is especially appropriate to use it after having received Holy
Communion at Holy Mass. It may be said at any time, but our Lord
specifically told St. Faustina to recite it during the nine days before
the Feast of Mercy (the first Sunday after Easter). He then added: "By
this Novena, [of Chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to
souls." (796)
It is likewise appropriate to pray the Chaplet during the "Hour of
Great Mercy" — three o'clock each afternoon (recalling the time of
Christ’s death on the cross). In His revelations to St. Faustina, Our
Lord asked for a special remembrance of His Passion at that hour.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
The History of the Chaplet
of The Divine Mercy
How to Recite the
Divine Mercy Chaplet
The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary
rosary beads of five decades. The Chaplet is
preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of
Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer
Optional Opening Prayers:
You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth
for souls,
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.
O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,
envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon
us.
(Repeat 3 times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth
from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I
trust in You!
Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostle's Creed
For each of the five decades
(On each “Our Father” bead of the rosary, pray)
Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and
Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus
Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole
world.
(On each of the 10 “Hail Mary” beads, pray)
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us
and on the whole world.
Concluding prayer (Repeat 3 times)
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have
mercy on us and on the whole world.
Optional Closing Prayer
Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury
of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and
increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we
might not despair nor become despondent, but with great
confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is
Love and Mercy itself.

“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the
Father has sent me, so I send you.’” John 20:21
Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent
the apostles out into the world to share His peace and
Good News, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus,
we are called to be grateful and generous. We should look
for opportunities to share His peace with our brothers and
sisters not only within our local parish boundaries, but
outside of them as well. In giving, you will receive the
peace of Christ.

NEW OPPORTUNITY: PARISH
PARTNERSHIP BEING ESTABLISHED
As we continue in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the
Archdiocese has challenged each parish to commit to new
opportunities for partnering with other parishes in the
community. The intention of this partnership is to
establish a mutually beneficial relationship to continue to
encounter Christ in one another. Church of the Ascension
will be partnering with All Saints Parish in Kansas City,
Kansas, and is looking for members of the parish to join a
planning committee to help define the goals and objectives
of this partnership. Please contact Father Tom at:
frtom@kcascension.org to indicate your interest.
ASCENSION’S CARING FOR OUR
COMMON HOME COMMITTEE
In response to Pope Francis’ call and the responsibility we
have to care for our environment we are forming a parish
initiative focusing on Caring for Our Common Home. The
purpose of this group will be to advise and recommend
practices related to our parish being good stewards of
God’s gifts of the earth and its resources including our
buildings, our grounds, our educational programs, our
outreach and service to our community. Goals are to help
all of us to make the link between our Christian faith and
concerns for the environment, to promote actions that will
reduce the parish ecological footprint and to encourage
parishioners to implement practices that positively impact
the environment. If you are interested in helping with this
initiative, please contact Fr. Tom at:
frtom@kcascension.org or 913-681-3348 x 137.

Covered in Prayer is the “blanket making” Ministry of
Church of the Ascension. We gather one time a month (on
the first Thursday of the month) to make blankets, talk and
generally enjoy each other while we sew. Bring your
machine! You can come and just get material and take it
home, or you can learn how to make the blankets! We have
people willing to teach you! We send over 150 blankets a
year to our parishioners who are ill or hurting, along with
friends and family members of parishioners, so we need
lots of sewers!!!. You do not have to be an expert sewer
(they let me come!). If you are looking for a family or “kid
friendly” activity, we also need flannel blankets that we
supply to troubled youth in facilities around our Parish.
(Come to the Rosary at 6:30pm first!!) We meet in the St.

in health with a spouse, parent, sibling or a friend? Are
you experiencing a change in your own health? Living
with a personal illness or having to care for and or love
someone who is chronically or terminally ill, can be one of
the most difficult challenges you will ever face. You are
not alone. We offer comfort, support and companionship
during difficult times. “Support Ministry for the Sick and
Caregivers” meets the first Thursday of every month at
7:00pm in the Conference Room. We also offer a Respite
Ministry where someone can come to your home, and give
you a break in caring for a loved one. For more

A FTER R EDISCOVERING J ESUS : E NCOUNTERING J ESUS
BY FR. NATHAN HAVERLAND
Hopefully you enjoyed your 40 day journey with the book Rediscover Jesus by
Matthew Kelly. Now what?
Step one: Pass the book along to someone else. Don’t bring it back to the Church. Don’t
drop off at your local library. Don’t bring it to the Ascension Garage Sale. Pass it on to
someone who really might benefit from it. This is a simple and effective way to
evangelize to the world.
Step two: The next step is for YOU to actually encounter Jesus. Jesus is truly present
and living all around us, but how do we encounter Him? How do we meet Him and
spend time with Him? To some the following may sound a little cliché, but maybe it is
also time to rediscover Jesus truly living and present among us!
Eucharist. At the Last Supper, Jesus made it pretty clear that He would not abandon the Church. Instead
of abandoning the Church, Jesus gave Himself to the Church in a completely new and unfathomable way.
Jesus could not have been clearer that the blessed bread and wine truly do become His body (Mt 26:26) and
blood (Mt 26:28), and so one of the easiest ways to truly encounter Jesus is by frequently attending Mass and
spending time in adoration. I have never met a person whose life was not radically changed by spending
more time with the Eucharist.
Confession. Immediately after the Resurrection, Jesus eagerly gave to the Apostles the power to forgive
sins saying, “the sins you forgive are forgiven” (Jn 20:23). He did not have to do this, but He wanted to do
this! He wanted all of humanity to encounter His mercy. The power to forgive sins has been handed on from
the Apostles to the priests of our present age in the sacrament of Reconciliation. If we want to encounter
Jesus, why not encounter that gift He was so eager to give on Easter and to do so frequently?
Scripture. The Scriptures are a priceless treasure of the Church. They are a collection of writings that
span many centuries but reach a culmination in the life and teachings of Jesus. They are the sacred vessel in
which we learn of God’s love for humanity. An excellent way to encounter Jesus is to prayerfully read
through the things He did and said. If you’ve never read an entire Gospel before, why not try?
The Forgotten. If you want to know someone, it is wise to spend time with the things they love. If we
search through the Scriptures, we see Jesus had a tremendous love for the sick and outcasts of society, often
to the dismay of others. Jesus even said that if we serve them, we serve Him (Mt 25:45). There is no doubt
that Jesus is truly present in the suffering and so if you want to encounter Jesus, spend some time with the
forgotten.
His Mother. As Jesus died on the Cross, we only know of a few things that were going through His
mind. We know He was thinking of our Father in heaven (Lk 233:34), of the Psalms (Mt 27:46), of the
criminals crucified with Him (Lk 23:43), and especially of His mother (Jn 19:26). God showed a tremendous
amount of trust in Mary in asking her, of all the women of the world, to be the mother of His Son. If you want
to encounter Jesus, turn to His mother!
These are of course not the only ways to encounter Jesus, but if you truly want to grow in your relationship
with Jesus, give these a try. No, I challenge you to try them! I do not doubt that if you do any of the above
with regularity that you will rediscover Jesus truly living among us.

WEEKLY PRAYER
Second Sunday of Easter
Believe It or Not
Baptisms
Leia Leigh Townsend
In today's Gospel we hear Jesus say three times, "Peace be
with you." While this was a common greeting, Jesus was
using it to remind them of his saying, "Peace I leave with
you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I
give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or
afraid" (John 14:27). The disciples were hiding in fear, so
they needed reassurance. Jesus gives them that reassurance
in three ways: his resurrection, forgiveness of sins, and a
blessing for future disciples.
Now that he is raised from the dead, they can take heart
that no one can truly hurt them--even death has been
overcome. The disciples had seen Jesus crucified and were
afraid any of his followers would be treated the same way.
So when Jesus appeared to them, he showed them his
wounds and let them touch him. He wanted to show that he
was not a ghost (a spirit or vision of someone who is still
dead). He has risen from death and it has no more power
over him. They can now take courage because they will
share in the Resurrection themselves. Breathing on them,
he bestows the Holy Spirit, source of our courage.
That leads to the second reassurance, forgiveness of sins.
Jesus died to take away our sins; now he shares that with
his disciples when he tells them that they can forgive sins
also (John 20:23). Anyone troubled by guilt can be
forgiven. The disciples themselves probably felt that need,
since they had deserted Jesus and one even denied knowing
him. As Jesus was sent by his Father, he now sends his
apostles with the mission to free others from sin. We too
can forgive others (and ourselves) knowing that God has
forgiven them and us.
Finally, the story of Thomas and his doubts about Jesus'
resurrection gives us some hope. Jesus blesses those who
"have not seen and have believed" (John 20:29). That
includes everyone down to the present generation who has
believed on the word of others--from the apostles in the
scriptures to holy people in our own time who have
experienced the Lord in their lives. We often think the
apostles were "more" blessed for having seen and heard
Jesus. But Jesus reverses that expectation; we are blessed,
even two thousand years after the Resurrection.

the Archdiocese celebrate Vocations Day. This is a
remarkable experience for our students. Coming together

guest speakers, praying together and independently, and
attending Mass. Students are encouraged to listen to the
Holy Spirit as he calls them to their lifelong journeys to
follow their hearts, minds and souls to what is intended by
God. Ascension Catholic School is honored this year with
the opportunity to host the Archdiocesan 5th graders’
Vocations Day on Wednesday, April 6.
