For fans of Barolo there’s sure to be great excitement around the 1997 Giacomo Borgogno e Figli Riserva Barolo, while Champagne devotees should take note of the 2000 Krug. From Quintarelli, the 2004 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico and the 2005 Alzero are must-haves for fans of this Venetian legend. Full body with integrated tannins and a polished texture. Love the mouthfeel to this. Extremely well done for the vintage, considering the hail in St Estephe. Try in 2018. Score: 95 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 20, 2014) 294827 [XD] 750 mL $249.85 despite a hefty core of crushed plum, raspberry coulis and cassis. The long, racy finish lets mouthwatering red licorice, fruitcake and singed anise play out, while a roasted apple wood note wraps everything up. Should unwind into a serious crowd-pleaser with cellaring. Best from 2016 through 2028. Score: 92 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, web only, 2013) 437277 [XD] 750 mL $47.00 CHÂTEAU LAROQUE 2010 CHÂTEAU LA CONFESSION 2011 AC Saint-Émilion TASTING NOTE: Another terrific effort from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this beautiful 2011 boasts a dense purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of smoky barbecue, red and black fruits, and subtle background oak. Rich, full-bodied and textured, there is not a hard edge to be found in this plush, well-endowed St.-Emilion. Enjoy it over the next decade. Score: 91 (Robert Parker Jr., erobertparker.com, April 2014) 298653 [XD] 750 mL $54.85 AC Saint-Émilion, Grand Cru Classé (Famille Beaumartin, Prop.) TASTING NOTE: Blackberries and dark chocolate at first. Opens up with leather, fresh wood and aniseed. Good body with pure fruit and a nice juicy acidity. Chewy with slightly firm tannins and lots of new wood that needs time to integrate. Try in 2017. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 18, 2013) 235481 [XD] 750 mL $67.00 WHITE WINE CLOS DU MARQUIS 2011 CHÂTEAU RAYMOND-LAFON 2011 AC Saint-Julien TASTING NOTE: The wine is all about AC Sauternes firm structure and dense tannins. It is concentrated while hiding rich, generous fruits. It still needs to balance the structure with the fruit. For the future, it will be a rich wine full of power. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, May 2014) 302968 [XD] 750 mL $74.85 LA CHAPELLE DE LA MISSION HAUT-BRION 2011 AC Pessac-Léognan, Second wine of Château La Mission Haut-Brion TASTING NOTE: This is very, very pretty, with plum, chocolate and cedar, plus hints of sweet tobacco. Full, very soft tannins. Savory and juicy. Delicious already, and hard not to drink it, but better in 2017. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 19, 2014) 299065 [XD] 750 mL $109.85 4 VINTAGES Ian D’Agata of Vinous gave this wine a score of 94-97. (vinousmedia.com, Aug. 2012) TASTING NOTE: Deliciously plump in feel, with toasted coconut, piecrust and warm brioche notes caressing a core of apricot, fig and creamed pear. The long, flattering finish picks up an orange blossom hint to offset the fruit. Best from 2016 through 2030. Score: 94 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, March 31, 2014) 296038 [S] 375 mL $29.85 FRANCE – BURGUNDY CÔTE DE NUITS RED WINE ANTONIN GUYON LES CRAS CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRU 2012 AC TASTING NOTE: This is also attractively perfumed though not quite as high-toned in character as the fruit is darker. The middle weight flavors are notably richer and possess more volume and mid-palate concentration as well with plenty of minerality present on the dusty and mildly austere finish that delivers fine length. This is more obviously structured and should age well over the better part of a decade. Drink: 2019+. Score: 88-91 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 15, 2014) 436089 [XD] 750 mL $87.00 DUPONT-TISSERANDOT GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN CLOS PRIEUR 1ER CRU 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: Features bright cherry and red berry fruit, with firm tannins lending grip and support. Shows a muscular feel overall, with a savory aspect to the finish. Best from 2016 through 2026. Score: 90 (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, Nov. 15, 2013) 436030 [XD] 750 mL $73.00 CÔTE DE BEAUNE RED WINE DOMAINE TAUPENOT-MERME AUXEY-DURESSES 1ER CRU 2013 AC TASTING NOTE: Since Romain Taupenot took over this domaine in 1998, quality has been progressing continuously, making him one of the rising stars in Burgundy. The Auxey-Duresses appellation is a source for some inexpensive Pinots and Romain’s style of wine is elegant rather than powerful. This has lovely, precise and delicate red cherry and violet notes. The fine-grained tannins are in balance with the aromatic red fruit palate and it’s fresh on the finish. Drink: 2018-2025. Score: 93 (Panel, decanter.com, June 8, 2015) 435545 [XD] 750 mL $65.00 THE CLASSICS COLLECTION • NOVEMBER 2015 DOMAINE CHEVALIER PÈRE & FILS CORTON ROGNET GRAND CRU 2010 AC TASTING NOTE: This is completely different compared to any of the preceding wines with its reserved, brooding nose of dense and sauvage red berry fruit and earth scents that are clearly ripe and fresh. There is excellent richness, power and concentration to the moderately austere and quite firmly structured finish that delivers impressive depth and length. This should also age well and need it too as it will not be an early drinker. Drink: 2022+. Score: 91-93 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 2012) 110601 [XD] 750 mL $114.00 DOMAINE RÉMI JOBARD MEURSAULT LE PORUZOT-DESSUS 1ER CRU 2012 OLIVIER LEFLAIVE PULIGNYMONTRACHET CHAMP GAIN 1ER CRU 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Meursault AC TASTING NOTE: Tasted blind at the 1er Cru Le Poruzot-Dessus comes from a 0.57-hectare parcel of vines planted in 1944 and 1985. It has a lovely bouquet bursting with mineralite and tension. It actually reminds me of one of Jean-Marc Roulot’s gems. The palate is very well balanced with a crisp, very focused, citric entry. There is lovely poise and freshness here – a wine that leaves you craving to taste it out of bottle tout de suite. Score: 92-94 (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2013) 435669 [XD] 750 mL $114.00 Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There are certainly some sulfur issues on the nose of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain 2011 from Olivier Leflaive, and it somewhat masks the terroir expression. The palate has a touch of bitter lemon on the entry. Moderate weight but tightly wound, slightly bitter and disjointed at the moment with a finish, but there is great substance here and real minerality. This actually trumped a lot more revered Puligny premier cru in the blind flight. Drink: 2016-2026. Score: 92 (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Nov. 2014) 401943 [XD] 750 mL $130.00 DOMAINE VINCENT GIRARDIN SANTENAY LE BEAUREGARD 1ER CRU 2010 AC Sourced from vines in excess of 45 years old that are situated in clay, limestone and marl-rich soils. The soils of Santenay are somewhat richer in marl than the rest of the Côte d’Or, and the wines they create are noted for their fullness and earthy complexity. Vincent Girardin is considered to be one of the best producers in Santenay and creates wines that deliver a distinct cherry, strawberry and mineral note. 435560 [XD] 750 mL $44.00 CÔTE DE BEAUNE WHITE WINE JEAN-MICHEL GAUNOUX PULIGNY-MONTRACHET LES FOLATIÈRES 1ER CRU 2010 AC TASTING NOTE: Bright pale yellow. MAISON ROCHE DE BELLENE PULIGNY-MONTRACHET SOUS LE PUITS 1ER CRU 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: Shows gorgeous harmony, with a vivid structure driving the lemon, apple, peach, vanilla and clove flavors. Linear and taut, energetically extending the spice- and mineral-infused aftertaste. Best from 2015 through 2024. Score: 93 (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, June 15, 2014) 436105 [XD] 750 mL $91.00 Vibrant, very pure aromas of flowers, nutmeg and cold steel. Sweet and suave on entry, then dense and energetic in the middle, with no excess fat to the flavors of peach pit, nutmeg and acacia flower. Noble, palate-coating Puligny without an ounce of excess fat. Finishes fresh, fine-grained, dry and very long. Score: 93+ (Stephen Tanzer, vinousmedia.com, Sept. 2012) 435354 [XD] 750 mL $112.00 DOMAINE JEAN-MARC MOREY CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET LES CHENEVOTTES 1ER CRU 2012 AC TASTING NOTE: This is somewhat more expressive as there is no issue with reductive notes to dampen the moderately exotic aromas of mandarin orange, apricot and mango nuances. This also possesses an opulent texture as there is plenty of mouth coating dry extract that is buffered by the relatively firm acid spine on the textured finale. It’s interesting as this is a big but not necessarily powerful wine that retains a fine sense of balance. Drink: 2017+. Score: 90 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 15, 2014) 205963 [XD] 750 mL $89.00 5 VINTAGES THE CLASSICS COLLECTION • NOVEMBER 2015 FRANCE – BURGUNDY FRANCE – RHÔNE CHABLIS NORTHERN RHÔNE WHITE WINE RED WINE LOUIS MICHEL & FILS MONTÉE DE TONNERRE CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2012 M. CHAPOUTIER LE MÉAL ERMITAGE ROUGE 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: A hugely appealing wine, AC TASTING NOTE: One of the wines of the the 2012 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre brings together all of the crystalline nuance and verve typical of this great site along with gorgeous textural richness. Lemon peel, white flowers and crushed rocks are laced into the wiry, tense finish. In 2012, the Montée de Tonnerre has an extra kick of richness that is highly appealing. Drink: 2016+. Score: 93 (Antonio Galloni, vinousmedia.com, June 2014) 226449 [XD] 750 mL $49.00 vintage, the spectacular 2011 Ermitage Le Meal is borderline perfection. Loaded with dark fruits, charcoal, roasted herbs, liquid violet and crushed rock-like minerality, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, layers of texture and superb concentration. Offering uncommon richness and texture in the vintage, it should have two decades of longevity (and be drinkable for most of it). Score: 98 (Jeb Dunnuck, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2013) 360800 [XD] 750 mL $372.00 BILLAUD-SIMON LES PREUSES CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: This is also ultra-pure and even more elegant with discreet aromas of sea shore, stone and citrus elements. The exceptional purity of the nose is confirmed by the saline-infused, detailed and wonderfully intense flavors that are at once generous yet precise before terminating in a palate staining finish that delivers flat out amazing length. In sum, this is an impeccably well-balanced wine of harmony and refinement. Drink: 2019+. Steely in character, packed with a firm structure and tightly textured, it shows a citrus side that will be refreshing and attractive as the wine ages. But it does need time, so wait to enjoy until 2017. Cellar Selection. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Sept. 2014) 436121 [XD] 750 mL $90.00 6 VINTAGES M. CHAPOUTIER LE PAVILLON ERMITAGE 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: Even better and a prodigious effort that hits all my sweet spots, the 2011 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from one of the top terroirs on Hermitage hill, the granite soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit. Spectacularly perfumed, with raspberry, blackberry, licorice, toasted spices and assorted floral nuances, this full-bodied effort has massive depth and richness, no hard edges and masses of finely polished tannin that emerge on and frame the finish. It will be approachable at an earlier age than either the 2009 or 2010, yet should nevertheless have 2-3 decades of ultimate longevity. Drink: 2013-2043. CHAPOUTIER LES VARONNIERS CROZES-HERMITAGE 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: The 2011 CrozesHermitage Les Varonnieres (which is a significant step up over the 2012) got a big “Wow” in my notes and is a brilliant Crozes-Hermitage. Cote Rotie-like with its perfumed floral, bacon fat, spice and olive-driven bouquet, this full-bodied, supple and downright sexy Syrah makes the most of the vintage. Enjoy it over the coming decade or so. Drink: 2013-2023. Score: 95 (Jeb Dunnuck, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2013) 731257 [XD] 750 mL $76.00 NORTHERN RHÔNE WHITE WINE M. CHAPOUTIER DE L’ORÉE ERMITAGE 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: Even better and always one of the top whites in any given vintage, the 2011 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree (first produced in 1991) comes from 80+-yearold Marsanne vines planted in the Les Murets lieu-dit. Gorgeously full-bodied and impeccably put together on the palate, with awesome texture and richness that’s framed by vibrant acidity, it boasts off the hook aromas and flavors of flower oil, buttered citrus, dried pineapple and powdered rock. It will be even better in another year, and age pretty much forever. As I’ve said before though, there is no harm in drinking these beauties in their youth. Score: 99 (Jeb Dunnuck, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2013) 702076 [XD] 750 mL $405.00 M. CHAPOUTIER LE MÉAL ERMITAGE BLANC 2011 AC TASTING NOTE: In the same league and from one of the warmest terroirs on Hermitage hill, the 2011 Ermitage Le Meal Blanc is a massive effort that has overflowing amounts of tropical fruits, white flowers, creme brulee, buttered peaches, licorice and striking, liquid rocklike minerality. Full-bodied, voluptuous and awesome any way you look at it, it too can be enjoyed any time over the coming 3-4 decades. Drink: 2013-2053. TASTING NOTE: Also incredible, the 2009 Rasteau has a similar, decadent feel in its black raspberry, licorice, smoked earth, chocolate and saddle leather. A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% other permitted varieties, aged in a combination of demi-muid, foudre and concrete tank, it has full-bodied power, massive, yet sweet tannin and blockbuster levels of depth and richness. (Joe D’Angelo, internationalwinereport.com, Nov. 2014) TASTING NOTE: Elegant overall, with a refined, creamy texture and beautiful integration. This rich Champagne displays power and focus, with expansive flavors of baked currant, plum, bread dough, crystallized honey, ground clove, grated coconut and ginger on the long-lasting finish. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully delineated, fresh, and focused white that carries building richness and terrific length. It was likely planted by the Romans and belonged to the St. Marien ad Martyres monastery in Trier from its founding around 700 CE through the Middle Ages. Egon Müller’s Rieslings are refined, elegant, pure and finessed, with intense flavours and a nearmythical reputation for their ageability. 430975 [M] 750 mL $87.00 8 VINTAGES DOCG TASTING NOTE: Bright, fully saturated ruby-red. Expressive aromas of ripe red cherry, black plum, shoe polish, minerals and sweet spices. Sweet, broad and rich, but with enticing fresh minerality energizing the full-bodied middle palate. The wine feels very young, and when uncorked it has a lactic note that denotes youth. The fruit is a mixture of red and black berries with some aromatic, balsamic herbs and a mineral hint. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and framed by round, fine-grained tannins. There’s a little bit of a bitter taste toward the end. This needs a little bit more time than the granite bottling as the wine is fuller and you feel the effect of the oak a little more. For comparison I also tasted the 2004 vintage, which felt riper, more concentrated and more obviously oaked (it was a different time then) as it still shows notes of smoke and spices. Still, it’s youthful and showing very few signs of evolution, which should give an idea about how the more balanced, current vintages might age. The wine keeps changing in the glass and at times I preferred the nose to the granite bottling. Though the palate remains a bit harsh, in the long run this will be the better wine. It showed better on day two. Super! Drink: 2016-2024. Sweet tannins, a succulent, fleshy mouthfeel, beautiful concentration and texture, and a long finish result in a sumptuous, irresistible mouthful of Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a deep, voluptuous effort that possesses notions of plum sauce, currant, licorice and liquid smoke as well as a full-bodied, decadent and yet beautifully pure, fresh texture on the palate. As with the Merlot, this is a big wine that isn’t holding much back; however, it’s a superb drink that will impress for 7-8+ years. Drink now-2021. The nose is rounded, and quite sensual, offering overripe oranges, chlorophyll, dried honey and quince, opening nicely with aeration in the glass. The palate is an absolute delight. This is extraordinarily well balanced with perfect acidity, very fine focus, the front of the tongue tingling with a dash of white pepper and though there is less fruit than other vintages that I have tasted, it is extremely well focused and has a presence in the mouth. Stunning. Drink: 2014-2040. Score: 95 (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Nov. 2014) 430918 [S] 750 mL $204.00 SHERRY A.R. VALDESPINO TONELES MOSCATEL DO TASTING NOTE: The NV Moscatel Toneles has reached a mythical status locally in Spain. It’s an extremely old, concentrated and powerful sweet wine that was long forgotten, because there was no market for it. The color is dark brown, almost opaque with amber-green edges. The ever-changing nose is an explosion of spices (curry and cinnamon) and noble woods, and from the sheer concentration it displays a myriad of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, balsamic herbs and even a note of coconut. After some time in the glass the roasted orange notes of Muscat come back intermixed with very spicy incense notes. Give it more time and it smells of camphor. It’s fascinating to smell it over the course of a few hours – even days. The palate is immensely concentrated, with the alcohol perfectly integrated and the extreme sweetness compensated by a piercing acidity that reminds me of some century-old Madeiras. It ends with an acute coffee note. The aftertaste is eternal. It is exceptional that such an old wine (it could be over 80 years of average age) keeps the freshness and balance, but when this happens, the wine is exceptional. A world-class sweet wine that shows what aged Muscat is able for. With its 430 grams of residual sugar, this wine is indestructible, but only 100 bottles are withdrawn and bottled yearly from a single, large cask. Drink 2013-2034. Complex, soft and floral with vanilla, oak, spice and anise notes. A whisky as remarkable as it is rare. TASTING NOTE: Excellence is the first single malt from Glenfiddich to use Bourbon casks throughout the entire maturation process. According to Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman, “By maturing this expression exclusively in Bourbon casks, we’ve created a beautifully intense flavour, reflective of the relentless passion we have for producing incredible single malts. With notes of lush vanilla, light oak and spice our 26 Year Old, while a new expression, remains true to Glenfiddich’s heritage of producing fruity, floral and deeply flavoured whiskies”. The nose is fruity and spicy; pineapple, digestive biscuits and developing malt. Spicy fresh fruit, notably peaches and apples, then plain chocolate and tannins on the palate. The finish dries steadily, with aniseed and oak char. Score: HHHJK (Gavin D.
