1st STEP: Email or contact us for program and course information.
2nd STEP: Are you a good candidate for a technical program?
Candidates for Information Technology are fast learners who bring certain skills to this technical program. Take the self-assessment
and see how you do.
Put a number value (1 or 2 or 3) in each column and total your final score at the bottom.

This does not
describe me
Own a computer with at least Windows

Have internet access at home
Have reliable transportation (all our
employers expect this)
Have time to study at home
If your score was less than 22 points talk with your instructor Lowell Vanderpool at 407-719-7778 or vanderl@ocps.net about ways
to strengthen your skills before entering an IT program. If your score was 22 points or higher you have a high level of potential
success in a program like CSIT-NSA offered at WPT.
Please note: Public schools do not discriminate against students with a criminal or
arrest history but some misdemeanors can make getting jobs in the IT field difficult.
Talk with your instructor. When felonies are involved in your background please
consider other training and fields of employment. Schools do not discriminate
against these issues but when employment is almost impossible it makes sense to
apply for training where employers are more open to these background issues.
Please remember: training is the easy part, getting employment is the more difficult
and challenging effort. As your instructor’s we want your successful completion of a
program and placement.
3rd STEP: See a school counselor and if you are applying for financial aid, visit our Financial Aid office.

Most students must take a TABE exam, exemptions are given to students holding a BS, BA, AA, or AS obtained in US
institutions.
o

4 STEP: Pay for your registration and begin class on your start date.
When can I start? After attending a program information session above, any student who meets the registration requirements can
begin their program/course at the beginning of each new nine week sessions. We generally begin day students on Monday; evening
students can begin either Monday or Tuesday.

Getting a good education at a reasonable cost is critical in today’s economy!
How do I choose a school?
 There are many choices for training, how do I make a good decision?
o Public schools
 Schools that are accountable to the Department of Education of the
state of Florida
 Are funded in part by your tax dollars
 Are affordable
 Winter Park Tech, Valencia, UCF are all public schools
o For-Profit Schools
 Seen often on satellite/cable channels commercials
 Are not a part of the public school system
 Please research the costs of these schools prior to signing your
registration papers!
 Involve very costly loans
 Most degrees from these institutions are not transferable to
Valencia or UCF
Compare the costs for computer/network education! (2008 figures)
Schools
Costs
Typical for-profit college/technical
school = 2 year degree
Valencia/Seminole Community College
2 years
Orange County Public
Schools/Technical Centers
1 ½ years of training, industry
certifications
$38,000, loans @ 5%-9% interest rate
Full cost of the school=$61,000
-Many of these degrees are not
accredited with any public school
system.
-Some adults find themselves in debt
for 10-20 years paying back these
loans.
$16,000, school loans for most
students
- limited hands on training
$4,200, no loans or debt
Hands-on job skills, experience in
computer/networking, job placement
and internships
When evaluating “for-profit schools”: do the math!
 Today’s educational institutions enjoy a competitive marketplace and public education must compete in an open free
enterprise, so how does the inquiring student make choices?
 Listen to the ABC News video recently done on college costs vs. Technical Centers
3

This is a one hour documentary on “For-Profit Schools” aired on PBS; please watch to better understand your educational
choice.
Begin with costs! What does this institution cost to obtain the training I need? A typical for-profit college costs $38,000 for an AS
degree. But that is not the real cost of that education.
 After talking with a for-profit school go to www.bankrate.com and use their online loan calculators and do the math to fully
understand what this education will truly cost you.
 The below graphic is the typical costs of a local two-year for profit school.



Next investigate the school’s accreditation.
o Does the educational institution have accreditation that will allow my training to be transferred to a community
college or university later in my career?
o Is the for-profit school accredited with the below agencies:
 Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE)
 Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS
CASI)
Is the school accountable to place their students in the fields they are training?
o Did you know that Tech Centers are accountable to place their students?
o We are very involved with placing our students in the job market.
Does the training relate directly to the skills and knowledge employers want?
o Employers want a motivated and skilled technical staff; they want good communication
skills, ethical employees, and people with initiative. They need employees who can work both alone and with a
team. Winter Park Tech focuses on these skills along with your technical training.
Need retraining funding?
Check out Workforce Central Florida, they are a funding partner for Winter Park Tech. http://www.workforcecentralflorida.com/
4
What important relationships does our school have?
 Official Cisco Networking Academy
 Official Microsoft IT Academy
 Educational member of CompTIA
 Accredited by Council on Occupational Education (COE) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
 Articulation with every community college in Florida.
