IUSB Southold Wind Ensemble THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER 0 say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail' d at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, 0' er the ramparts we watch' d, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. 0 say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? HAIL TO OLD I.U. Come and join in song together, Shout with might and main; Our beloved Alma Mater, Sound her praise again. Chorus Gloriana, Frangipana, E' er to her be true; She's the pride of Indiana, Hail to old I.U.! - Joe T. Giles, 1894 2 MEMBERS OF THE PLATFORM PARTY A. James Barnes Lester C. The counterpart of the pageantry enacted each year on campuses all over the world is the solemn climax and recognition of the graduates' years of study and preparation for responsibility. To help sp ectators understand the significance of the ceremony, the following d escription is furnished. PROCESSION Leading the procession is the grand marshal, bearing the ceremonial Mace, emblematic of the authority of the state and the university. The grand marshal wears a white brocade gown with panels trimmed in red velvet and a w hite brocade cap with gold sa tin shoulder sash and gold tassels. Other marshals wear should er sashes of variou s colors and designs. Led by marshals, the candidates march behind the respective divisions and schools that recommend them for their degrees. They are: School of Allied Health Sciences Division of th e Arts Division of Business and Economics School of Continuing Studies School of Dentistry Division of Educa tion Division of Liberal Arts and Sciences School of N ursing School of Public and Environmental Affa irs Purd u e University School of Technology As the ca ndid ates reach their seats, the members of the faculties of Indiana University South Bend march in, wearing the colorful hoods of the colleges and universities from which they were gradua ted . The climax of the processional is the platform party, which includes trustees of Indiana and Purdue universities, d eans and other personnel, and fin ally the presidents of Indiana and Purdue universities. As his badge of office, the president of Indiana University wears a jewel, emblematic of the history of the state and of th e university. The trustees of Indiana University can be identified by their red gowns, which have red velvet panels and red chevrons on the sleeves. They wear black caps trimmed in cream with gold metallic tassels. The trustees of Purdue University can be identified by their black gowns trimmed in distinctive old gold. ACADEMIC ATTIRE All candidates for d egrees and those who hold degrees, including university officials and fa culty and visiting dignitaries, are attired in traditional ca ps and gowns. The basic color for most caps and gowns is formal black, except for the associate d egree candidates, who wear gray. However, degree recipients wear distinctive tassels on their caps (called mortarboards) and hoods of various hues draped d own the backs of the gowns. CAPS Ca ndida tes for d egrees wear regulation caps with the tassel color appropriate to the school or division from which they are being graduated . The tassel colors are: Allied H ealth- Kelly Green Arts-Copper Business and Economics-Drab Continuing Studies-Silver Dentistry-Lilac Education-Light Blue Liberal Arts and Sciences-White Nursing-Apricot Public and Environmental Affairs-Peacock Blue Purdue Universi ty School of Technology-Red GOWNS The bachelor's and associate's gowns have a closed front and open sleeves. The master's gown has extremely long, closed sleeves, from which the arm's extend throu gh a slit at the wrist; the end of the sleeve is square, with an arc cut away just above the bottom. The doctor' s gown has velveteen panels down the front and voluminous bell-shaped sleeves on which there are three velveteen bars. The velveteen is usually black, but may be blue for philosoph y or green for medicine and optometry. 5 HOODS The bachelor's hood is rather short with a narrow velvet ed ging in the color matching the tassels and a lining in the color or colors of the institution-crimson at Indiana. The bachelor's hood is not w orn by candida tes for this d egree. The master's hood is considerably longer, has a wider velvet edging, and exposes more of the lining. The d octor' s hood is easily recognized by the w idth of the velvet edging, the w ide panels at either sid e, the grea ter length, and the full exposure of the lining. The colors of the edging most frequently seen are blue for philosophy, green for medicine, and purple for law; the colors for the honorary doctor's d egrees are purple for law, white for letters, and golden yellow for science. HONORS Candidates who have been tentatively awarded honors in general scholarship are distinguished by fourrageres, which are looped cords worn from the left should er. Fourrageres with cream and crimson cords indica te highest distinction; those with cream cord s indica te high distinction; and those with crimson cords indica te distinction. H onors are awarded by vote of the various faculties, and the fourra geres are provided by the university. The appropriate recognition is record ed on the individual' s dipl oma as a permanent testimonial of achievement. For Purdue University graduates, highest distinction is signified by black and gold fourrageres. Distinction is recognized by gold fourra geres. SYMBOLS Traditional in all formal ceremonies of Indiana University are th e Mace, symbol of authority; the Jewel of Office, emblematic of the office of the president; and the Collar of the Jewel of Office. The first is carried in the acad emic procession by the grand marshal, and the last two are worn by th e president. In design and ornamentation they represent significant events in the history of the state of Indiana and of the university. The treasured symbols were presented to the university by its chapters of the Miami Triad in celebrating their centennials. The Jewel of Office was presented by Beta Theta Pi in 1945; the Mace by Phi Delta Theta in 1949; and the Collar of the Jewel of Office by Sigma Chi in 1958. 6 THE HISTORY OF ACADEMIC ATTIRE Acad emic costum e of tod ay has a history of nearly eight centuries. In medieval Europe, all townspeople--men and w omen-wore long, flowing robes and gowns. The materials and colors varied according to the wealth and rank of the individual and were governed by royal decree. Gradually, there developed distinctive gowns for the various professions, trades, and guilds. Students in the medieval universities of Paris, Bologna, Oxford, and Cambridge organized themselves into guilds. Their usual garb, a long gow n, was necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings. Scholars, generally members of church orders, wore th ese robes and also hood s to protect their shaved head s. La ter, skull caps were worn on th e head and the hood became a cape that could be pulled over the head in unpleasant wea ther. As additional universities were found ed, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were adapted by their faculties for bachelors (apprentices of arts), masters (teachers), and doctors (teachers who had completed postgraduate studies). The variations appeared mostly in the hood and were regulated by strict rules. Tailors who departed from the authorized d esign could be punished . When caps and hats came into fa shion in the fifteenth century, the hood s became ornamental, draped over the shoulders and d own the back. The academic hat was ad apted from the headdress of ordinary people. It was first worn as a symbol of the master's degree and existed in various forms. Some caps were stiff, some soft, some square, some round with a tuft in the center. The tassel of tod ay is an elaboration of the tuft. The mortarboard style comes to us from Oxford. When academic costume cam e to America in 1754, styles varied . In Europe they still d o; however, in our country, usage has been standardized by the Intercollegia te Cod e of Academic Costume. One of the m os t significant occurred in the spring of 1967, w hen the first d egrees were award ed at South Bend marking the em ergence of !USB as a comprehensive university campus serving the region . Northside Hall opened in 1972. In 1975, India na University purchased land and p rop erty from Associates Corporation of North Am erica, w hich d oubled the size of the South Bend campus. !USB began using som e of these p rop erties in 1977. The Franklin D. Schurz Library, the newest facility on campus, was formally d edica ted in the spring of 1989. In 1922 Indiana University scheduled its first classes in the South Bend area, primarily to help local teachers m eet licensing requirem ents. During the Depression of the 1930s, Indiana U niversity recognized the need to p rovide a broader range of higher educa tion opportunities in hom e communities; as a result, the South Bend-Mishawaka Extension Center was established to offer a basic two-year program . Administrative officers were located in Central High Sch ool, and classes were offered during late afternoon and evening hours in the school and in the dow ntown YWCA. Just as the campus' physical plant expand ed during the 1960s, the center experienced a m ajor period of acad emic d evelopment, em erging as a comp rehensive d egree-granting institution. In 1963, it beca m e a regional cam pus, and soon afterwa rd the first four-year d egree programs were au th orized. In 1967, the first seniors to gradua te from the South Bend campus received their degrees. The following year, the campus becam e Indiana University at South Bend, a title indica ting another new level in its aca demic d evelopment and statu s within Indiana University. After a d ecline in attend ance during th e war years, returning veterans contributed to a postwar enrollment rise, w hich launched the center into a m ajor p eriod of growth. In the late 1950s, a site adjacent to the St. Joseph River in South Bend was acquired for a new campus with the help of South Bend officials, organiza tion s, and individuals. Today Ind iana University Sou th Bend is the acknowled ged "University that educa tes Michiana," serving higher educa tion need s of the community with a diverse, highly-respected acad emic program, and actively planning how to continue m eeting those need s well into the future. In 1961 the move was mad e into the first new facility, N orthside Hall. A second building was acquired in 1966, and a third structure was completed in 1969. A major addition to The more th an 7,800 students now attending !USB can choose from over 90 fields of undergraduate study or from m aster's degree p rograms in business, educa tion, liberal studies, music, nursing, social work, or public affairs. 21
