Vincent Massey Your School - Your News May 2016 www.vincentmasseyschool.ca “A Variety of Student Learning Opportunities” Chess Club Success! The annual Vincent Massey Chess Tournament wrapped up on March 22 with Kohen Foley being crowned this year’s champion. In second place was his younger brother Axxel Foley. As always we enjoyed a pizza party to celebrate the end of the chess season. I would like to thank Dr. Bill Taylor for his ongoing support of the Chess Club at Vincent Massey. Dr. Taylor has been an active part of our School community for many years, and without his support and assistance this program would not happen. The students and I thank you, Dr. Taylor! I would also like to recognize the participants who meet once a week starting in November, then as the tournament begins in February, play as many as three games per week. Vincent Massey Your School - Your News May 2016 Page 2 March Pride and Praise Assembly Each month students are recognized for their hard work performed in and out of the classroom. Classroom teachers select students who show they “care to learn” and their names are read at the Pride and Praise assembly. Congratulations to the students pictured to the left, as they each received a certificate and their name in a draw for a movie pass sponsored by our School Council. Congratulations to the Grade Four students who participated in Games Day on Saturday, April 16th at Crescent Heights High School. Students had the opportunity to play three different games with other schools from across the city. Thank you to Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. McClain, and Miss Speltz for their support with the team at this event. Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) Grade 6 students will begin this year’s PATs with the Language Arts Part A on Thursday, May 12th. For more information on the PATs click the link below: More informaƟon School Council News “Parental Involvement - input and collaboration for an enhanced learning experience.” School Council Executive Positions At our School Council meeting on Monday, May 30th at 7:15 p.m. executive positions for the 2016-2017 school year will be determined. The process for nominations was described at the April meeting and we encourage you to attend the May meeting to participate in this process. The following executive positions are to be determined; Chair, ViceChair, Treasurer, and Secretary School Council and the executive play an important advisory role to the school principal and help make Vincent Massey a great place for our students. This evening was a celebration of learning through art, math, stories, and gym activities. It was wonderful to see so many families participating in each activity. Thank you to the parent volunteers, community readers and artist, who came in to make the evening a success! A special thank you to JJ Kimber, our Special Event Chair for School Council, for her planning and organizing of this event. Hello Families and Friends of Vincent Massey School: April has come and gone in a blink of an eye. Only 2 more months of school left! In April students got the opportunity to have lunch with our school resource officer Constable Camille Darr. Thank you to Camille for attending and making our visit fun! In May HUG/MyPlace will be having a self-care fair family night at the Medicine Hat Family Leisure Center. There will be multiple community organizations that will be there. Have a great May!
