Plano, Texas Chapter October November, December 2012 Material Issues President’s Corner Volume 9, Issue 4 If you have not been to our website lately, you have missed some news. The Plano Chapter won the “Growth Chapter of the Year Award” at ASG conference in Houston. You also need to check the American Sewing Guild on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/sewingguild) and the ASG blog (http://www.asg.org/scr/blog) . There are many pictures from conference and you might even see some familiar faces. Fall is now here and everyone has gone back to school and we are back into our normal routines. We have all of our normal meetings back on schedule until we reach the holiday season. During the holiday season make sure to check the monthly mailings and information online for changes to meeting schedules. UPCOMING EVENTS Annual Luncheon and Elections -- October 27th. This year Shirley Cunningham will be our speaker. Look inside this newsletter for more information. Annual elections for the Chapter Advisory Board are held at the luncheon. If you cannot be present you can cast an absentee ballot. Look inside for more information. In addition to the elected CAB members we have other positions that need to be filled: Newsletter Editor, Historian, Special Events Coordinator, and two new positions, Neighborhood Group Coordinator & Education Chair. They ask for our “Secret”. I believe the secret is having so many neighborhood groups; that we are a small geographical area; and our awesome members. Thank you to all of our Neighborhood Group leaders, our Chapter Advisory Board, and all or our fabulous members who are willing to jump in to present programs to the neighborhood groups and help out when needed. Welcome to our newest members… Ozella Haily Linda Murphee As many of you know, member, Terry Jerden recently lost her husband. To the Plano Chapter of ASG members, I want to thank everyone in the Plano Chapter for the beautiful thought behind the donation for the scholarship for a Fashion Design student at Texas Woman’s University in memory of my husband, Ody Jerdan. It is truly appreciated and knowing how much I love sewing, he would have been so honored by this particular memoriam. Thanks you so much. By Maggie Tinnin No, I am not talking about the Democrats and the Republicans; I am here to discuss the Plano Chapter of the American Sewing Guild. As the majority of our members know and for you new members, elections for our CAB (Chapter Advisory Board) are held at our Annual Chapter Meeting each October. The CAB ensures the Chapter is in compliance with ASG National Headquarters requirements and represents the interests of the members of the Plano Chapter. ELECTED POSITIONS President – Overall responsibility for chapter business and activities; Oversees Chapter activities and encourages participation of Chapter members in running the Chapter; Chairs CAB meetings; Submits reports, plans budget, and stays abreast of info disseminated by National ASG Headquarters; Attends conference to represent Chapter; must currently be serving on the Chapter Advisory Board 1st Vice President – Coordinates with President on Chapter activities; Serves as President when the President is unavailable; Signature on bank account; may hold another appointed CAB position. 2nd Vice President - Serves as President when the President and 1st VP are unavailable; may hold another appointed CAB position. Secretary – Records and maintains minutes of meetings; chapter correspondence. Treasurer - Financial record keeping; bill payment; quarterly reports to National ASG. APPOINTED POSITIONS Membership – Maintains current membership info in conjunction with ASG Headquarters. Distributes updates to members. Experience with MS Excel and email desirable. Special Events Coordinator - Coordinate or appoint a member to handle a special event. Make sure all P&P rules are followed for special events, verify insurance for the venue location if needed. Budget for special events. Make contact with educator and make sure contracts are signed. Education Chair– Help develop programs that Neighborhood Groups can use. Keep a list of members available to teach various programs. TAG - “Teach Another Generation” - a new program through ASG national. They are working on teaching programs. Community Service – Organizes community service projects and service days. Serves as liaison to community groups and Neighborhood Groups (NG) for need and distribution of outreach items. Collects community service hours and information from ASG members and files Community Service reports with ASG Headquarters. Retail Liaison – Solicits discount agreements and advertisement revenue from retailers. Periodically visits retailers to renew ad and discount agreements. NG (Neighborhood Group) Coordinator – Functions as liaison between CAB & NG leaders to keep them current on CAB issues. Assembles information on NG schedules to coordinate with Newsletter Editor and Website Manager. Newsletter Editor- Responsible for all aspects of the designing, publishing and printing of quarterly newsletter. Desktop publishing skills and experience working with electronic images desirable. Website Manager - Designs, maintains, and updates Chapter website. Computer web designing skills required. www.planoasgsews.org Material Issues Page 4 Plano Chapter of the American Sewing Guild Annual Elections Proxy Ballot 2013 Chapter Advisory Board October 27,2012 In accordance with the American Sewing Guild Policy and Procedures, the following positions are to be elected for the year 2012. The members listed on this ballot have agreed to serve in the positions noted. Please choose one candidate for each position. All positions are for a one-year term. You may select a write-in candidate provided you have that person's permission. Two ways to vote: 1. Bring your ballot to the Annual Meeting on October 27, 2012. 2. In addition to her Duties as President, Becky also leads the Pattern Master Boutique Neighborhood Group, as well as teaching sewing. 1st Vice President: Melanie Fredrickson † † Melanie has been a member of Plano ASG for about 3 years and has served as 1 st Vice President for the past year. She also enjoys leading the Needle Nuts neighborhood group. Melanie is a custom dressmaker creating beautiful garments for her clients. 2nd Vice President: Markita Gumble † † Markita was a charter member of the Dallas ASG 25 years ago. After transferring to the Plano ASG she instantly became involved and has served as the 2nd Vice President for the past year. She is also the leader for the McKinney NeighborGroup. Markita is not only a talented sewer, but also dabbles in other arts and crafts. Treasurer: Carol Hamilton † † Carol has been a member of the Plano ASG for four years and is a member of many neighborhood groups. She has been sewing since she was about 7 years old and enjoys making clothing, tote bags, and curtains, as well as quilting, needle felting, crochet and making jewelry. She has served as Treasurer for the past year. Secretary: Mary Jo Forbes † † Mary Jo has been a member of the Plano ASG for only a year, but when our previous Secretary resigned, she volunteered to fill that position and has happily accepted the nomination this year. Mary Jo enjoys designing clothes for herself and for her 2 year old granddaughter, Holly Frances. Our purpose is to provide information, education and programs for our members and the community. Membership in the Guild is open to the public. As Community Service Chair, Jane will coordinate the national ASG charity project for the chapter; collecting materials and planning sewing dates. She will be reporting community service hours and donations to ASG national headquarters twice a year. Jane has reported that blankets were taken to Presbyterian Hospital of Plano and they were so grateful that they sent us a gift card to Walmart to purchase fabric for more blankets. Jane has reported to national headquarters the following data: 171 Items completed 63.75 Project hours The ASG National Community Service Project for 2012 is “The Blanket Project”. The guidelines can be found on the ASG national website, www.asg.org. We will be making blankets that will be used in our local community. All items must be sewing related; and if the item is fabric, it should be in good useable condition with a description of content, size and age.
