I finally made it to the top, the
Chapter President for Charlotte. It
wasn’t as if I purposely sought the
position, it was determined that I
avoided it too long, uh, it was my
turn to lead our group. I am almost
a charter member and have been on
the board in some capacity most of
my membership. I hope to be equal
to the task.
How were your holidays? In my
family, we only give gifts to the
children and the matriarch, my
mother. This year, the only things
I made were a Port-a-Pocket purse
insert and hand-knitted a vest for
her. She didn’t get hand-knitted
socks this year. My sister-in-law
gave me a cute pair of Chihuahua
earrings as a “sister” gift.
As to our Chapter, we have planning sessions in January to set the
course for our sewing adventures.
So please attend the Thursday January 13 and/or Saturday January 15
to participate in the planning. There
will be a board
meeting at 11:00
am on Saturday
January 15 at
Panera Bread.
All are welcome
to see what a
Chapter Advisory Board does.
There
are
some programs
around our region to check
into. The Region
3 2011 meeting
will be in sunny Sarasota, FL on
February 9-13.
The South Carolina chapter is
hosting an educational meeting on
January 22 at Aiken Technical College. If you are interested, contact

Letter from our Past President
A final noteI wanted to make sure to say a
heartfelt thank you to everyone
in the chapter for allowing me the
privilege of being the Chapter President for the previous three years. I
am truly grateful for having had the
opportunity. I was able to attend
three of the National conferences
and two regional meetings all of
which contributed to increasing my
leadership skills, my sewing skills
and making new sewing friends all
over the country. Within the chapter
I feel like working one on one I got
to know more of you on a deeper
basis. I treasure your friendships
and look forward to continuing to
get to know even more about all of
you. I know you will all welcome
Diane as our new Chapter President
and give her the same amount of respect and support you gave me. At
the end of the day the direction of
the chapter is up to all of us. I look
forward to staying around for the
ride and sewing, sewing, sewing!!!

New Year, New Look
Every new year brings about the
opportunity for new beginnings. As
the new editor of our newsletter, I
wanted to introduce myself as I introduce a new look to our Newsletter.
So why the new look this year? I
find that when I work on a project,
whether it is designed in Adobe,
fabric, or another medium, I rarely leave anything alone and I am
continually moving things around,
changing colors, you name it, no
design is off limits for at least a moment. When I started working on
this first edition, not making changes was quickly becoming uncomfortable so I asked Diane if I could
make some changes.

My name is Reita Fisher, and I
joined ASG Christmas 2009, after attending several of the Saturday meetings. Upon looking at the
newsletter, it may not surprise you
to learn that I am also a part-time
graphic designer. I work for a multinational nuclear engineering company. I do most of my work from
home, although I do go in the office
some. I have a Bachelors degree in
Marketing from Loyola, New Orleans, however my graphic experience comes from working various
jobs since graduation. Look for
more about me in getting to me in
the coming year.

sure of the exact time frame but have
enjoyed my membership greatly! And
have made
some of the best friends I have ever
had. I have been able to explore all kinds of sewing
techniques, delved into all kinds of fun endeavors like
beading and machine embroidery and for the very first
time in my life have a large stash of fabric (which has
grown over the last 10 years) – note that I used to buy
what I needed for a project and nothing extra so I never
had much of a stash and spent lots of time driving to
and from the fabric store. I also have a sewing studio
and lots and lots of gadgets…. There are so many talented women in our group and I have learned all kinds
of new things from many of them. Thank you all for
being my best friends and always supporting through
many of life’s trials and tribulations.

the opportunity to spend time with others who share your interests, learn

QUILTMAKING – the For RookiesSM series with Connie Spurlock
and Nellie Vileikis offers classes for those just getting started in quilting, while returning favorites offer a variety of classes at all skill levels.
M’Liss Rae Hawley explores color theory, Kim Montagnese returns with
new classes in her very unique style and technique and Debby Kratovil
brings updated piecing and machine quilting techniques. The Pfaff Studio
is all-quilt this year, too.
There’s more fitting, more current fashion updates, wardrobe fixes,
sewing techniques and simply more inspiration and how-to. SEWING
categories have been refined to enhance class choices including:
• Fashion Fit & Construction with Cynthia Guffey,
Emma Seabrooke, Peggy Sagers
• Garment Style and Design with Gail Yellen, Barb Callahan and Sandy Miller
• Sewing Efficiencies with Lorene Bonewitz, Kathy Ruddy

dynamic lecture/demo sessions.
MACHINE EMBROIDERY is revitalized with new projects in the

Cedolia dazzles in short project classes with dramatic impact – and a short
software lesson, too.
COMPUTER SOFTWARE has become such a critical player for so
many of us, we’ve continued with the software lab this year. Featuring
embroidery editing with Debra Bohn and Diana Cedolia. Lectures abound
and you’ll find answers, new techniques and new ideas about just how
much your keyboard can help in your home studio as Soni Grint explores
the building blocks of embroidery design and Darlene Pollard offers advice on stabilizers, hooping and lettering.

THE EXHIBIT HALL will have more of everything: more shopping,

I just want to share my reasons for finding time for our chapters’ retreat every
year and why I love this escape to the
mountains. I always have tons of projects
I have been working on, I make sure to
precut and put all projects together for
easy completion, or not completion depending on the year. This past year I took
a large quilt I was making for my niece
as a gift. I got a lot of progress done on
the quilt between, the eating, sharing and
shopping that we always do, and this year
I went to Foam and Fabric with a new
friend who I got to know a lot better on
our road trip. We had a nice visit and a
very nice time exploring all the cool fabrics at Foam and Fabric. The place we to
go is a picturesque inn in Flat Rock NC
that is built on an old mill with wonderful views, weather and lots of fun to be
had by all participants. Of course there is
the marathon sewing as well as lots getting done just because we focus on our
projects and talk about all kinds of things
while sewing away the days. I highly recommend the retreat for anyone who has
never been as it is a great experience and
lots of fun.

Holiday Party 2010
Once again the annual CAB election and seasonal party was a great
success. We began our festivities
with the election of the new officers. That completed we proceeded
to celebrate the day with a lunch
followed by our traditional gift exchange. The meal was a pot luck
and the pots were delicious. Next
year, I am going to bring a big platter from home. I never have enough
room on my paper plate for “just a
little taste” of everything. After an
enjoyable meal we began the gift
exchange. Exchange is not quite
the correct descriptive word. It is
more of a select-a-gift-from-one-of-

the-beautifully-wrapped-packages
and hope no one swipes it from you
kind of game. Every gaily wrapped
creation created this year for the
exchange was exceptionally lovely.
In the end, each attendee went home
with a lovely remembrance from the
party. As parties with sewing buddies go…this one is always tops on
my list.

While our core guild is small and
our programs are few, we would
love to see our membership and programs grow. For that we need your
input. Despite our limitations, our
active membership have the willingness and ability to share the wide
range of expertise of their talents.

sew in a group atmosphere our
chapter schedules: periodic sew-ins,
a
mountain
sewing retreat,
community
outreach program,
and
much more. If
you still can’t
find something
that interests
you, perhaps
a small group
could be organized in your area.
So to our members please consider adding “Attending local ASG
functions” to your new year’s goals.
