TOOLS FOR CHANGE PROJECTS
Introducing the course leaders
Catherine Heaney
Change Leader
Frimley Park Hospital
Cath has been working in the NHS for 12 years, after graduating from the University of London with an
honours degree in Psychology. She is an experienced change leader, with NHS roles spanning both community
and hospital-based healthcare settings.
In her role at Frimley, Cath takes a lead role in Organisation Development and works closely with service
managers and clinicians to enable them to make change happen. Her passion is facilitation, especially working
with multidisciplinary groups, and her approach is collaborative and inclusive.
Cath co-developed the “T4CP” training course for staff at Frimley to support them to deliver their own
improvement projects, through a mix of facilitation, mentoring and coaching. This is something she finds
particularly rewarding about her role.
Outside of work, Cath enjoys having fun with her 5-year-old daughter Grace and amongst their favourite
activities are dancing, reading and visiting the seaside, whatever the weather!
Philip Haynes
Director
Lean Health Management
Phil has worked in Healthcare for 9 years after spending 10 years developing Lean knowledge and skills in
automotive manufacturing. He enjoys working directly with people at all levels, supporting them in making a
difference in what they do.
He is an experienced coach and facilitator and has worked within the UK and internationally on many change
programmes. His engaging and collaborative approach helps builds a strong platform for success.
In the last two years, Phil has also been working with Forensic Crime Labs and within the Social Care sector,
delivering measurable and sustainable benefits.
Phil has a good sense of humour and is known for his ability to introduce an element of fun into activities!
Outside of work, Phil enjoys the opportunity to travel that his work brings. He is also looking forward to
starting a new (genuine) undertaking, Lean in Pubs.

Introduction to the course directory
As part of the Tools for Change Projects course, all
students apply their learning to an improvement project
of their choice.
This directory provides a brief description of the projects,
who is running them and how they have applied
learning in to practice.
The directory is in order of those projects which are
completed first, followed by those that are currently in
progress.
There is also a selection of case studies giving a little
more detail about the projects and their leaders.

The shared purpose: To provide a booking appointment for pregnant women that
maximises direct patient care time, provides a clear written summary and instigates
prompt onward referral and care planning
Project problem:
To capture the complete maternity pathway electronically

CASE STUDY: Initial 4 hours of acute stroke care
Shared purpose: To reduce disability and mortality in patients with confirmed strokes
by streamlining the initial four hours of acute stroke care
Project problem:
To determine where time can be saved when treating patients who arrive to the
Emergency Department with a suspected stroke so that thrombolysis is
administered within the gold standard time of 60 minutes and patients are
admitted directly to the Hyper Acute stroke Unit within four hours of arrival.

arriving to the Emergency Department by Ambulance

Project Description:
There is variation in the type and level of
training that nurses receive on G9/CCU.
Therefore different levels of nurses report
varying levels of knowledge and
competence.
The project aims to provide training to

Project Description:
There is a lack of training in specialist skills
in Orthopaedics being provided to ward
nurses. This has an impact on staff
engagement and retention rates.
This project aims to improve the training
available to ward nurses to develop more
specialist skills in nursing patients with
Orthopaedic conditions.

appropriately reviewing surgical patients
are unclear. Discharge information
