Newsletter Editor: Mona Wong APRIL/MAY 2007 President’s Message…. Spring has sprung! Our 1st annual Sweet Jazz Night was a huge success thanks to the many helping hands of our parents and students. What a great evening of performances from all the South High Jazz Band groups. A big thank you to everyone who attended, brought something sweet to share, helped serve coffee and tea, helped with set-up and decorations, donate raffle items, wrap donated items, or stayed to help clean-up. Everyone went home a winner that night. Job well done Spartans! All our musicians are doing a fantastic job, capturing top awards during last month’s competitions. Jazz Band and Drumline took first place in their last tournaments. The 5th period Wind Ensemble did an outstanding job at the Thousand Oaks SCSBOA festival, scoring another superior in sight reading. Both the Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band hit the ball out of the ball park during their Spring Concert at the Armstrong Theatre. Keep up the great work! There is still time to catch a performance of your favorite ensemble; keep an eye on the calendar. We made it back safely from England and Scotland! Congratulations to all the participating students for their outstanding performances and great representation abroad of our South High music program! This was an experience of a lifetime for both young and old. Thank you to Mr. King and all of the chaperones and parent attendees who worked so hard to make the trip a success. Congratulations to our 2007-2008 executive board members: Co-Presidents - Bruce Chew and Kelly Rogers Secretary - Mike Griffiths Treasurer - Carol Button VP Marching Band - Dianne Reyes VP Jazz Band - Janet Hubert VP Concert Band - Glenda Chiang INSIDE THE NEWSLETTER VP Drumline - TBD 2006-2007 Committee Position . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . page 10 2007 European Tour Recap . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . page 6-7 Announcements . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . page 3 Sincerely Yours, Birthdays . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . page 3 Calendar . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . page 12 Community Event . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . page 11 Dianne Reyes Concert News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I personally want to give a BIG thank you to all of the parents and students that pitched in to help me that night with the concession stand and clean up afterwards. Also, thanks go to Jack’s Pizza and Starbuck’s who gave us substantial discounts, enabling us to make a small profit of $50.00. However, NEXT YEAR we need to really push ticket sales! To pay tribute to Brecker, we talk to the musicians with whom he collaborated and those he influenced. We tell the story of how a young post-Coltrane tenor saxophonist from Philadelphia emerged on the scene to redefine the role of his instrument. For more on the life of Michael Brecker see—Downbeat Magazine in the Band room or via the internet at www.downbeat.com . 5 APRIL/MAY 2007 issue Spartan Band Booster news 2007 EUROPEAN TOUR RECAP We had a fun and fantastic 8-day tour of the United Kingdom with our combined ensemble. Along with the chaperones and the additional parent attendees, our student participants enjoyed a tour of the English and Scottish countryside, visits to several key cities and landmarks along the way, and delivered several powerpacked performances to our British friends. One moment we were observing green pastures chock full of sheep with their newborn babies, and the next we were immersed in the medieval culture of the Vikings; from the quaint cobble-stoned streets of Shakespeare’s birthplace, to the hustle and bustle of London’s Soho district and the magnificent royal palaces, we were submerged in an education of England’s history. We enjoyed a little musical culture with live performances of Les Miserables, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera in London. We rode the train across England and landed at Platform 9-3/4 of Harry Potter fame. 6 APRIL/MAY 2007 issue Spartan band Booster news The memories will go on and on and I hope, as we all review the multitudes of photos, we will be reminded of all the great experiences along the way. Thanks to all the chaperones for their VERY HARD WORK and thank you to Mr. King for preparing us all for such a monumental endeavor. Here’s to many more exciting educational tours in our future! 7 APRIL/MAY 2007 issue Spartan Band Booster news FUNDRAISERS ACTIVITIES Band Booster Fundraising Dear SHS Band Parents, This is the first of many newsletter updates to keep you informed on our plans and ideas for fundraising for the band. We all know that having our students in the band costs money and our goal as a Booster organization is to be as effective as possible in our efforts. This first year as the new Ways and Means Chair has been an incredible learning experience for me. And it’s been great to work with such an incredible Booster organization. For me it has felt like jumping on a speeding bullet train! There have been so many activities and fundraisers on the calendar that I just had to take a leap and jump on for an amazing ride! If any of you have felt the same way I feel like I’m in good company! For those of you who were unable to make the last Booster Meeting we had a brief discussion on our approach to fundraising for the band. We are going to evaluate all of the past fundraisers and focus on those that get us the most “buck for our band”. The Golf Tournament was extremely successful last year and our Annual Greenery Sale has been very successful since inception. I welcome any and all input to our fundraising program so if you have thoughts and ideas please email me at macilva@earthlink.net or call me at 310.791.0306. Also, I am looking for parents who can work with me as part of the Fundraising Committee. So please contact me and come join the great ride! 2007 Golf Tournament Planning has started for our 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Los Verdes golf course on August 15th. If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact Kelly Rogers at 310-791-8569 or kerogers@omm.com . Best regards, Mary Cilva SCRIP - Gift Certificate Scrip/Gift Card usage isn’t just for the holidays! Incorporate scrip into your normal shopping and dining and you will save money for your student and the band all year round. Come to the monthly booster meetings to purchase scrip from the inventory or order whenever you want at http://home.earthlink.net/~shsbandscrip/. If you have problems with the page, just email Lisa Branson directly at shsbandscrip@earthlink.net or call her at (310)325-4500 to order or inquire. Special orders can be accommodated so let her know what you want if you do not see it in stock. Just in the past few months, we sold over $12,000.00 in Paper Scrip, and half of this profit ($500.00) went to the student accounts. 8 APRIL/MAY 2007 issue Spartan band Booster news As always thank you to the student officers who work so hard to help the boosters, including our talented artists: Stacey Liu, Nancy Gomi and Ghazzy Afrasiab A BIG “thank you” to Glenda for all her hard work on the Spring Concert and to all those who helped out.
