Thomas and Beatrice Penn built their estate, called Chinqua Penn Plantation, in the 1920s with the idea of grandly entertaining friends, family and business associates. The current owners of the Rockingham County estate will continue the tradition this holiday season by hosting the annual Holiday and Candlelight Tours through Jan. 1. At least 13 theme-decorated Christmas trees will be scattered throughout the 27-room mansion. Included will be a 14-foot live North Carolina Fraser fir in the massive living room of the house. The mansion is regaled in its holiday splendor with decorations of the season in each room. Tour hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The wine tasting room, gift shop and antique shop offer unique and regional interest gifts. Special evening candlelight tours will be offered on Dec. 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be live music in the mansion that evening and the Girl Scouts of Rockingham County will set up luminaries along the drive for their annual canned food drive. Chinqua Penn will be closed Christmas Day. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, the military and students, and $10 for youth (6 - 16). Chinqua Penn is at 2138 Wentworth St., Reidsville. For more information about the tour, call 349-4576. In this season of giving, don’t forget our neighbors. Police Chief Reece Pyrtle is spearheading a food drive in city offices to collect items for the Salvation Army. Our Salvation Army feeds up to 100 of our Eden neighbors each weekday and they need our help to continue. You can drop off non-perishable foods at City Hall or in the Police Department. Your donations will be greatly appreciated!
