Serving San Diego’s Animals and Their Humans
Since 1880, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA have offered a wide range of programs
and services that strengthen the human-animal bond, prevent cruelty and neglect, provide
medical care and educate the community on the humane treatment of animals.
Striving to be a resource for pet owners beyond the point of adoption, they offer behavior and
training classes, youth and adult education courses, an on-site retail store and more.
As one of San Diego’s oldest nonprofit organizations, the Humane Society has campuses
located in San Diego, Oceanside and Escondido, as well as adoption centers inside the Petco
stores in El Cajon and Oceanside. The San Diego Humane Society is supported solely through
contributions, grants, bequests, investments, proceeds from the Muttique retail store and small
fees for services. Annual fundraisers include the Walk for Animals in May, and the Fur Ball in

Mom Creates Product to Help with Bedwetting
“Everyone goes through nighttime potty training. For some, it doesn’t take long—others will take

awhile to get there. Brolly Sheets take the hassle out of changing a wet bed, plus they are better
for the environment and your wallet than disposable pads,” says Diane Hurford, creator and
owner.
The waterproof bed pads are topped with 100% cotton fabric and are available with and without
wings. “Because they sit on top of the sheet, you only need to remove the wet Brolly Sheet and
replace it with a dry one—rather than stripping the whole bed,” Hurford says.
“I designed Brolly Sheets in 2006 after I needed a fast and easy solution to changing my
daughter’s bed in the middle of the night,” Hurford explains. “Because they were designed by
me—a mom—I made sure that Brolly Sheets come in fantastic colors to match a child’s decor
and bedding. They also come in several bed sizes and are easy to wash.”

Massage and Bodywork Center Includes Play Space for Kids
“MamaLacho’s specializes in acute and chronic pain control through therapeutic touch, burn
scar massage and helping people feel better about themselves in their own skin. We carry
products that promote health and wellness in everyday life,” says Arica Ursulich RN, CMP.
“The crowning glory of MamaLacho’s is a play area for kids in the therapy room, for times when
you really want a massage but don’t have anybody to watch the kids,” she says. “Bring the kids;
get the therapy you need. In the kids space we have a slide, a chalkboard, puzzles, toys and a
TV with a DVD/VCR player. The kids can be occupied and entertained in a wholesome, fun
environment.
“We have a monthly open house to introduce our services to the community, as well as guest
speakers on topics ranging from health and nutrition to the benefits of mala beads and energy
work,” Ursulich says.

October Is Filled with Family-Friendly Events at the Fleet
“The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center features more than 100 interactive science exhibits in
eight galleries, as well as major traveling exhibitions. Visit us and create colored shadows, touch
a tornado, examine the vibration of guitar strings and get your hands on a variety of intriguing
scientific phenomena,” says Nathan Young, public relations and promotions manager.
“The mission of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is to inspire lifelong learning by furthering
the public understanding and enjoyment of science and technology,” he says.
Family Science Saturday takes place every week from 1–3 p.m., and is free with paid
admission. Special events this month include DNA Day and Saturday Science Club for Girls:
Super Gross! on Oct. 11 (reservations required) and Halloween Family Day on Oct. 26.
The Fleet also hosts birthday parties and seasonal science camps, and offers discounted
admission to school groups. “Check out our website for details,” says Young.
