The colour of the skin is the result of a subtle mixture of pigments known
as melanins. Melanins are synthesised during the melanogenesis process,
which takes place in specialised skin cells, melanocytes. Melanogenesis
begins with the transformation of an amino acid, tyrosine, into melanins
under the action of numerous enzymes, especially tyrosinase. The
melanins are then transported in the form of melanosomes from the
melanocytes to the surface of the skin; their mixture at this stage reveals
the colour of the skin.

as melanins. Melanins are synthesised during the melanogenesis process,
which takes place in specialised skin cells, melanocytes. Melanogenesis
begins with the transformation of an amino acid, tyrosine, into melanins
under the action of numerous enzymes, especially tyrosinase. The
melanins are then transported in the form of melanosomes from the
