They now have about 400 cow-calf pairs, in addition to 15,000 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat. Their Case IH equipment was an important factor in making the expansion a success. AGRONOMIC DESIGN: PUTTING PRODUCERS FIRST MEANS PUTTING YIELD FIRST. Agronomics is where agronomy and economics meet. It is a framework for viewing every aspect of production through a cost/benefit lens. For today’s producer, that means ever-increasing attention to each detail of an operation, with an eye to bottom-line results. For Case IH, it means every new development needs to pass a simple litmus test: “Will this help growers maximize their yield and ROI potential?” FARMERS ARE THE ULTIMATE EXPERT AGRONOMICS: IT’S AGRONOMY AND MORE Every season, producers face the challenge of making the most of their acreage and getting the highest yields they can. They make decisions about crops, seed, inputs and equipment based on sound principles – the best agricultural, financial and market information available. Agronomic Design starts in the field – listening, learning, developing a deep understanding of producers to inform every design decision. So while product development uses the talents of many specialists in design, agronomics, engineering, ergonomics, telematics and more, the final and most important voice at the table is that of ag producers. Nobody knows their acreage better. That applies to big decisions about big machines, like Axial-Flow combines. The first Axial-Flow combine was refined in its prototype stages by putting it to work in actual harvest conditions and integrating grower suggestions into the design. Decades later, Axial-Flow retains its industry leadership through a process of continuous improvement. That means hearing what producers have to say, benchmarking actual harvest results against competitors, and adding design upgrades season after season. Similarly, when producers told us that they weren’t achieving the field results they wanted from their tillage passes, Case IH gathered more than 2 million hand-collected data points in a five-year field research project in five states and seven locations. From that research, we learned that up to 10 percent of seeds planted failed to emerge or develop a full ear at harvest because of cloddy, uneven output. Most of those lost plants were recovered, simply by focusing on delivering level output, both clod and valley free, following primary tillage. EARLY RISER ROW UNIT ADVANTAGES COMPLEMENTED Every corn grower strives for rows and rows of evenlyspaced corn plants growing at the same height and stage. Those photocopy plants are clear signals that your seed got off to a good start, planted at the proper depth, with uniform soil pressure all around the seed and good soil-to-seed contact. compaction vectors that intersect at the base of the seed trench. The proven Early Riser planter row unit was designed to start seed off right. First, it creates the industry’s only true “V” seed trench using a furrow forming point and seed protection shoe that holds the seed trench open long enough for the seed to drop to the bottom of the trench. Compare that to a conventional row unit that uses trench wall compaction to hold the furrow open and leaves a loose “w” soil profile that leads to inconsistent seed depth. A corn seedling only has 120-150 psi capability to establish a root base and get its head out of the ground. Once it gets sunlight, it becomes more vigorous and has 450 psi to grow its roots. If a new plant has to deal with compaction at the bottom of the seed trench, as with a conventional row unit, it can’t establish a strong root system, putting it at a disadvantage for the whole growing cycle explains Bill Hoeg, North America Marketing Manager for Planters. Then the Early Riser reduced radius gauge wheel captures the soil coming out of the trench, while carrying the weight of the row unit and planter almost two inches from the seed trench wall. This leaves a soft trench wall and a compaction free zone directly below the seed. Compare this with conventional row units that carry the weight of the planter on the edge of the trench and create “The proven emergence advantage of the Early Riser system makes the bottom of the seed trench a compaction free zone,” Hoeg adds. “As a result, plants develop a more robust initial root base as they push their heads out of the ground. It tries to collapse the compacted side walls from the top down, mixing and covering the seed with dry soil and leaving air gaps that lead to poor soil-to-seed contact.
