Grape, Sax Player and Tiny Goodbite. How much are they worth? —Ben, Denton, Texas A: The California Raisins figurines, which were given away as premiums by Ha rdee’s, pop up more often on the East Coast and in the South, since that is where most of the restaurants in the chain were located. I checked several price guides and believe the four California Raisins figurines you have are worth about $5 each. Incidentally, Hardee’s issued a second series and eventually a third and final series. Q: I have several Hummel’s in the Christmas Bell series. How can I determine values? —Beth, Hammond, La. A: Accordi ng to The Of f icia l M.J. Hummel Price Guide by Heidi Ann Von Recklinghausen and published by Krause Books, the Christmas Bell series was introduced in 1989. From that f irst issue through 2000, this guide claims the bells are worth about $30 each. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. To Stir Or Not To Stir? I got the most interesting e-mail the other day (to bobonbingo @ earthlink.net). It really started me thinking. Mike H, who lives i n sout her n India na, w rote to ask me about whet her or not small town Bingo halls do a good enough job of making sure that play is completely random. Here is what he wrote: “Bob, I have a question that I wish you would explore. I often play Bingo at a hotel that has a once-a-week Bingo session. The pr i zes a ren’t ver y big for most of the games. Only the blackout game, the f inal game, is really worth it. The winner gets a certificate good for $50 in food at the hotel’s restaurant. I don’t mean that the final session is the only one that’s any fun. Even the earlier games, for which the prizes are often as ‘cheap’ as a hat with the hotel’s logo, ARE still fun. “I remember you a lways saying that a person plays Bingo for the fun and not for the prizes. A ny way, here is the point. The At 97 years young, Maria Luisa St. Tomas is a two time winner at Martin’s Church. She is a $150 bingo winner and a $100 winner from a split win on the Lucky 7. Mely Maray is a two time winner at St. Martin’s Church in La Mesa on Wednesday night. hall is so small that the caller uses a globe-shaped wire cage w ith a handle for turning it to pick the numbers. I am sure most people have seen one of these. You turn the cage one-way and the balls get mixed. Turn it the other way and a ball falls out and goes down a ramp into the caller’s hand. One of the callers cranks the dr um of numbered balls at a ver y high speed to mix them. I noticed that the balls seemed not to mix, but—because of the centrifugal force of the turning— seemed to stay i n a pack, not mixing. “I wonder what you think. Is it possible to NOT mix the balls when trying to do so? Mike.” Well, Mike, you have certainly opened up a new area of discussion. To check this out I went to a similar Bingo hall to watch the ca ller as he cra nked the cage. And, sure enough, I noticed the same thing. If the cage is cranked beyond a certain speed, the balls appear to be stuck to the inside walls of the cage and don’t mix well. In large halls, the ones that have more expensive automatic equipment, a blower or stirring arm usually keeps mixing the balls to keep the game totally random. Maybe there is a lesson here. If you are a caller at a small hall where you use a crank-able cage, spend a few minutes obser ving your cage. See if there is an optimum speed at which it appears that the mixing works the best. You might be surprised at the results of the experiment. Next time a round: Oh, those funny patterns. The Look Of A President As a child I wasn’t fond of any teacher I ever had, but I can still hear my parents saying. “Whether you like the teacher or not you have to be respect f ul because of who she is…a teacher, and a nun.” Oh, I was always respectful, but for a different reason. She had that yardstick. I also figured God wouldn’t like it if I was not respect f ul to that nun. Then I learned that I was expected to be respectful to a whole parcel of folks because of the “off ice” they held in my life. Besides my parents and teachers, there were pol ice of f icers, t he P resident, grownups, the people next door, my grandparents, baby sitters, big kids and bullies, the Easter bunny a nd Sa nta a nd most of all God. Eventually I deleted the Easter bunny and Santa from the line-up. As I grew older and became a voter, I found there was one person who got a huge dose of disrespect even though he held the highest office in the land and that $500 winner, and Ida is a $50 winner. was the president of the United States. This seemed strange to me at first, till I realized that we have never had a president who left us in tears on his last day in office. Yet looking back, there has always been someone who, further on down the line, recalled something special about each of them, which leads me to believe that the griping is all part of the game called politics. It gets pretty exciting when it comes close to time to choose the person who is next that is eager to serve and then be condemned for every good thing he tried to do in office. We discussed this at Bingo last night and we all agree that there are two questions one should ask himself/herself before throwing that hat into the ring. Do I look presidential? A red baseball cap and bill atop a $5,000 suit does not look presidential to me. Neither does a see-through evening gow n, even i f t he v iew is only from behind. Question number two is a little more complicated. Is my last name easy to make embarrassing jokes about? For example, the name Bieber translates to pimples, acne and inexperience, the name Kardashian causes a slight nauseating sensation in the pit of the stomach, the name Jenner indicates an aura of indecisiveness. Lewinski is not a good name for a president. After discerning these two questions and you still want the job, you are a target for every comedia n. Just remember t hat t he name-calling isn’t personal. It’s just part of the game. That’s why all Presidents secretly play Bingo. It gets them over the tough spots. #4 $10 Winner - Crystal Ransome of Spring Valley, MITE, Inc. Answers: Not much. House Speaker John Boehner recently had scathing remarks for the VA. He said, for example, that only one employee involved in the nationwide hidden wait list scandal has been let go. Boehner had to backtrack and rethink that. He conceded that some retired with benef its, got t ra nsfers or took paid leave, so, strictly speaking, the number of people dumped is higher than one. Compare and contrast that to t he assessment of our new VA secretary, Robert McDonald, former president a nd CEO of t he consumer products compa ny Procter & Gamble. He says that over 900 employees have been fired, 60 specifically in relation to the wait list scandal. Real numbers were more like 75 people investigated and eight fired. He later claimed he misspoke. Boehner says t hat Cong ress gave the VA more than $16 billion (that’s with a “B”) to fix the problems of long wa its for appointments by opening new clinics, starting up the new Choice program and hiring more medical staff. McDonald said that wait times were down by 18 percent. The reality: The number of veterans waiting more than 90 days for an appointment at VA clinics has doubled. Sad to say, t he new VA secreta r y has some problems. It doesn’t help that he told a homeless veteran that he had been in “special forces.” McDonald and VA public relations had to jump in later and say that, no, McDonald wasn’t ever in the special operations forces. He finished Ranger training and left the Army. #3 $25 Winner - Curtis Davis of El Cajon, Sycuan Casino Continued from page 3 1/2c. grated Parmesan cheese In a large skillet, heat the oil over a medium-high heat. A pet trust is a legal instrument that allows you to designate a specific amount of money for your pet’s care and name a trustee to carry out your wishes. There are two main types of pet trusts you can set up. One option is a “traditional pet trust,” which is effective in all states and is similar to a trust you’d set up for a child, but it’s expensive costing anywhere from $500 to $1,500. Or, you could opt for a “statutory pet trust” which is a much cheaper option and is currently allowed in more than 40 states and the District of Columbia. To create a statutory pet trust you simply add a few lines to your will, such as, “I leave $5,000 in trust for the care of my dog and two cats.” State law will fill in the gaps, so that the simple provision may be effective. If you want to set up a pet trust, talk to an estate-planning attor ney, preferably one who has experience with pet trusts. Or, you can work with a company like Peace of Mind Pet Trust (peaceofmindpettrust.com) or Trusted Pet Partners (trustedpetpartners.com). Some factors you’ll need to consider before setting up a pet trust include: The trustee and caretaker: Most pet trusts designate both a trustee to manage the money and a caretaker to handle the day-to-day care of the pet. The trustee can make sure the caregiver is doing what they’re supposed to do. It’s also a good idea to name an alternate trustee and caregiver in case your first choice is unable or unwilling to serve. Caregiving details: With a traditional trust, you can specify the things you want your pets to receive like their favorite foods, how often they should be taken to the vet, their burial arrangements, etc. Funding the trust: You can set aside money from your estate to cover the costs, or if you’re short on funds, another option is to buy or use an existing life insurance policy and name the trustee as the beneficiary. Other Options Another legal option to consider is a “pet protection agreement,” which is much less complex than a formal pet trust. This allows you to name a guardian to take care of your pets, and gives you the ability to leave funds to care for them. You can make a pet protection agreement online at legalzoom. com (800-962-7490) for $39. If, however, you don’t want to create a legal tool, you should make informal arrangements by asking a trusted friend or relative to take care of your pets if something happens to you. In addition, you could set up a separate bank account to cover expenses and name the caretaker as the beneficiary. Or, if you don’t have anyone who would be willing to take care of your pets after you’re gone, you can make arrangements to leave it to a rescue, humane society, pet care program or other animal welfare group. Many of these organizations find new homes for pets or offer lifetime care, but may require a fee or donation. Talk to your veterinarian about options in your area. Ultraviolet Rays Here’s eye- openi ng news: While wearing sunglasses to protect against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV ) rays may not seem necessary during cloudy, cold-weather months, harmful U V rays that can damage your eyes are actually present all year-round. Like your sk i n, your eyes ca n a lso be sunburned, which can cause blurred vision, redness, tearing and temporary vision loss. Exposure to UV rays may also contribute to the development of longterm vision conditions, such as cataracts, macular degeneration and, in some cases, skin cancer on and around the eyelids. In fact, light actually intensifies as it passes through the eyes and is 22 times stronger at the outer edges of the eyes and eight times stronger at the inner edges of the eyes. These are the most common places for pterygium (a thin tissue over the white part of the eye) and cataracts to develop, both of which are associated with chronic UV exposure. Children’s eyes are especially sensitive to UV exposure, and it’s never too early for them to wear proper sun protection. In a study published in Review of Optometr y, vision changes due to U V damage were found in children as young as age 9. What’s more, 71 percent of parents reported they do not ensure that their children wea r sunglasses outdoors, according to a recent survey conducted by the American Optometric Association. To learn more about how to protect your eyes from UV exposure, talk to your eye doctor and visit www.transitions.com. © NAPSA October 2015 BINGO BUGLE - SAN DIEGO COUNTY EDITION - 19 The USS Midway Museum 910 North Harbor Drive, San Diego Main Phone Number 619-544-9600 Website www.midway.org 20 - BINGO BUGLE - SAN DIEGO COUNTY EDITION october 2015
