For those SEWPPA members who knew him, Chet was not only an excellent photographer but a great businessman as well. Chet and his wife Marlene built a well known portrait studio in Mequon providing their customers with a classic style of portraiture which shall forever stand the test of time. We who are in the business of photography should strive to do the same. Are the portraits we provide our customers able to stand the test of time? Or are we caught up in the trends of the day producing images which may be salable now but will date themselves in a few short years? I think all of us can agree that it is getting harder and harder to make a living in the photography profession. And as the technology improves and makes it easier and easier for the non professionals to produce decent photographs that are "good enough" and low cost for most people, the professionals will continue to suffer. With that in mind, your SEWPPA Board is working on ways we can help the members in our professional organization improve their photography and business plans to stay viable in today's market. We have several changes in mind that we hope will help increase our membership and encourage meeting attendance. We have a great wedding program lined up for our upcoming meeting, along with an image competition, social hour, and studio tour. And you can't beat the price! So take some much needed time out for yourselves after a busy summer and plan to attend the September 10th meeting in Grafton. You won't be disappointed! "Chet" FROMWorzella THE PRESIDENT August 4, 1942 - July 21, 2012 My Friend Chet Worzella Obituary Chet Worzella was the kind of friend you don’t come by very often. He was soft spoken, kind and caring. But when it mattered, he was strong and bold and said it like it was. With Chet’s passing, we all lost a man who we will never forget. Chet founded Worzella Photography in 1974 in Thiensville. In 1988 the photography business moved to its current facility in Mequon. He was a well respected photographer and touched many lives with his portrait work. Chet served as SEWPPA President in 1977. Amy (a former employee) and Kyle Sturkenburg now own and operate the business. Alan and I have known Chet and Marlene since the 1970’s when we joined sewppa. We served on committees with him in wppa and sewppa. He was the kind of person who got the job done right. He ran a very successful photography studio and helped his fellow photographers any way he could. I remember when Alan and I opened our shopping center studio in 1984. Chet was right there to help us out. He printed enlargements for our studio walls and never charged us a penny. He came to the studio and gave us pointers on how to do things. But the one thing I will never forget is this one piece of advice. He told us to open our studio the way we wanted to operate it on the day we retire. He said if you start your studio cheap, you can never build it to be up scale. And he was right. It helped us tremendously through the 25 years our studio was open. We were successful because of the enormous help we received from Chet Worzella. We will never forget the parties we all had together. We were all like family. We gathered together with our children so they would grow up to know what true friends are. We had dinner parties, BBQ’s, costume parties, photography convention parties, you name it, we did it together and more importantly, we had our children with us. We were all loving friends who cared about each other and our families. We all helped each other when in need, and it was because of people like Chet who made it all possible. As we say a prayer to the Lord to bless Marlene and their family, we know Chet is looking down and will keep the blessings flowing to them. Their deep faith in the Lord will comfort them at this time of sadness. We love you Chet. We will miss you. - Rose Goodstone WWW.SEWPPA.ORG • SEPTEMBER 2012 • Chet was active in several groups, Jaycees, Optimists Club, M-T Chamber of Commerce, T-M Rotary, Wisconsin Professional Photographers Association and other volunteer organizations. As a member of Stony Hill Church he was active in Bible studies, Haiti mission outreach and adult-child mentoring. He had a calling for Christian evangelism. In 2005 the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program (MMAP. org) became his passion. He and his wife Marlene volunteered their time traveling the country building churches and being a part of Christian work projects at various facilities nationwide. Chet found great joy in working on mission projects and in serving the Lord. He wore a little inscription in his hat that read “I’m third” and would explain to anyone who asked its meaning, saying; I’m third, family and friends are second, Jesus Christ my Savior is first.” Mission work led him to Haiti in 2007 and 2008. Work mission teams from Stony Hills Church continue to carry on this legacy. Chet’s life was directed by his love for the Lord. He was a compassionate, humble man with a quick wit. He believed in returning the Glory to God for any accomplishment. In retirement he became skilled in the art of woodworking/furniture building. When he was no longer able to travel to do mission work, he built and donated his woodworking to churches for mission fund raising and for other charitable fundraisers. Chet is survived by his loving wife of forty three years Marlene (nee Bulgrin), their daughter Brook (Dick) Best, grandson Chet “CJ”, son Blair Worzella and his eight remaining siblings. A heartfelt thank you to family, friends and medical personal for your exceptional care and support during the past three and a half years of Chet’s illness. It's been through a lot over the last several years. From its humble beginnings at members.aol.com/sewppa, it's grown, lived long, and prospered. But it also spent a lot of its life as a collector of sorts, a ship sailing through the waters of the intertubes, collecting all sorts of barnacles on its hull (while hunting the occasional 255/255/255 whale). Changes here, additions there; it always functioned, but it grew more confusing than intended and less attractive than desired. The first major overhaul was converting the web site to WordPress. Prior to the conversion, web site maintenance was totally dependent on one person (me) with proprietary software and knowledge. The position of "Webmaster" (I do not like that term) had to be held by someone who knew how to write web sites and ether already had the right software or SEWPPA had to purchase it. It basically was a monopoly. Using WordPress was intended to break the monopoly; while knowing HTML and CSS was (and still is) extremely helpful, and having the appropriate software can be very useful, none of that was essential anymore. SEWPPA web site design and maintenance could be accomplished directly online, by almost anyone with proper access with any web browser. Or at least that was the intent. The second major overhaul to the web site was accomplished when Jim Schoonover took it over, rebuilding it from the ground up and providing solutions to many of the problems that cropped up over the years. (Those metaphorical barnacles mentioned above.) Unfortunately, some problems weren't solved as well as could be wished, and new problems appeared. Also, by using a proprietary application for the redesign, Jim inadvertently reinstated the monopoly of the single person. Recently, he also decided he didn't want to maintain the web site anymore, which leads back to me. This, now, is the third major overhaul: taking the good things that Jim did (including as much of his aesthetic as I can preserve), hopefully solving things that he didn't/couldn't, and making the web site again independent of a single person -- removing the monopoly. The intent and goal is to make any future redesign, maintenance, updates -- whatever -- able to be accomplished from any web browser, with no special proprietary software necessary. Having the extra knowledge -- and appropriate software -- is helpful, but one should merely need to know how to use WordPress and the necessary plugins in order to maintain the web site. That is how it should be, and that is now how it is. Please note that people with no knowledge of web development or web design are using WordPress for their own web sites and blogs. SEWPPA should be no different. The web site address goes back to www.sewppa.org. If you have any shortcuts or bookmarks to www.sewppa.org/wpnew, please delete or change them. Your old password will still work -- and there's a normal "lost your password?" link that you can easily use. When you log in as a SEWPPA Member, you'll see that the menu of options expands to include pages available only to Members. Hopefully things are easier to find and understand; the FAQs/Support page should help. As I write this, I'm still tweaking and fixing, and waiting for an update to a plugin. But by the time you read this in the Newsletter, the web site should be fully baked. Thanks. Mike WWW.SEWPPA.ORG • SEPTEMBER 2012 • VOLUME 35 • NUMBER 3 9 Southeastern Wisconsin Professional Photographer’s Association A MESSAGE FROM MARKETING AND PROGRAM THE PRESIDENT UPDATE Marketing SEWPPA Speaker Questionnaire A small group of members got together at Firefly Photography in Grafton on May 21st to brainstorm about ways to market SEWPPA to new members. Bringing in new members is the only way to keep SEWPPA moving forward into the future. A few of the ideas that were brought up were keeping the cost of meetings down to make it more appealing to the newer photographers, holding studio tours, business cards for us to hand out to possible new members, utilizing Facebook to promote our meetings, and a question was put out on Facebook as to what type of meeting content would people be interested in. With that in mind, several ideas were presented to the board. One idea is being mulled over this summer by the board members and hopes to have some information for you after our Sept. 10th meeting on our one big idea! A few months ago, I asked SEWPPA members what and who they wanted to see. I was hoping to get a consensus of one topic or speaker, but the results of the questionnaire were inconclusive. There was a request for nearly every aspect, so it wasn’t too helpful to direct me to any one, specific area. So, I’ll look at the speakers that were requested and choose one that fills any void I think we’ve had. Fuzzy Duenkel, 2012-2013 Program Chairperson If you have any additional ideas you would like to share regarding the marketing of SEWPPA please feel free to contact me. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. 2 Creativity is the external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought. 3 Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds. 4 Composition is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker. 5 Print Presentation affects an image by giving it a finished look. The mats and borders used should support and enhance the image, not distract from it. 6 Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest. 7 Lighting — the use and control of light-refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is man-made or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image. 8 Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image. 9 Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect. 10 Technical excellence is the print quality of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting and correct color all speak to the qualities of the physical print. 11 Technique is the approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, film choice, paper selection and more are part of the technique applied to an image. 12 Story Telling refers to the image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.
