Our February general meeting was met with high winds and rain. It was great to meet some of our newer members, however, who braved the weather to come out and say hello. We were also treated to a look at a member’s 3.8S that was so freshlyrestored, it was almost painful to see it in the rain. In March we can live vicariously through our JDRC/NWA members who will be heading to Phoenix, AZ for the combined Western States Meet and JCNA AGM. Hopefully they will bring us back some sunshine as well as good stories from the meeting. If anyone is considering the drive down to Phoenix and would like to caravan, Hank Snider is making the trip in his E-Type and there may be some Canadian Jaguar Club members joining him. If you are staying closer to home there are JDRC events on either end of the lake to lure you out with your Jaguar. Steve Christensen has scheduled a general meeting dinner on Saturday the 24th in Kent. There is also a technical session organized by Chris Johnston at Fenders and Fins in Woodinville. Details about these events are in the JagMag. Finally, make sure to add the back-to-back April Rallies to your calendar. The Tulip Rallye on April 21st and our own Spring Thing Rally/PowellsWood Show and Shine on April 28th should be a great kick-off to the 2012 driving season. Look for articles about these two in the JagMag. I hope to see you out with your cars. Tom Doyle 604 896 0159 Volume 53 Issue 3 March 2012 Executive Board Report The Board of Directors held its second meeting of 2012 on February 2nd. Board meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at alternating locations: either at a Board member’s home or a restaurant. Meeting locations are listed in the events calendar in the JagMag. At each Board meeting, the various officers give briefings, upcoming events are discussed, and club issues are voted on. The following are some of the topics discussed at our February meeting. Sunshine report: The Board was briefed on the engagement of Sunshine Chair Karolyn Walden to fiancé James Deal—an announcement was in the Editor’s Bits & Pieces section of the February 2012 JagMag. The Board sends their congratulations to Karolyn and Jim. Shortly before publication of this edition of the JagMag, the Board was saddened to hear of the passing of club member Linda Papineau—our deepest condolences and thoughts are with her family. If you want to know if any club members are ill, or how an ill club member is recuperating, you can contact the Sunshine Chair or a Board member. Also, if anyone knows of a club member who is ill, or has had a happy event, such as a new baby, milestone birthday, or a wedding, please let the Sunshine Chair or a Board member know. The club is in good shape financially. A detailed financial report is published once a year in the JagMag; the most recent report was published in the February 2012 JagMag. As of February 2nd, our club had 125 paid family memberships for 2012, eight of which are new memberships. Several upcoming events were discussed, including the next JDRC/NWA General Meeting, which was scheduled for Saturday Feb. 18th at Roundtable Pizza in Redmond. Also discussed was the Spring Thing Rally, which is scheduled for April 28th and will end with lunch at the lovely setting of Powell’s Wood and includes a garden tour. A motion was passed to spend up to $300 on prizes for the Spring Thing Rally, so that’s one more reason to sign up for the rally! No Tech Sessions had been scheduled at the time of the February Board meeting but several were in the works for the spring. See the online Calendar of Events and JagMag for details on upcoming events. The Concours Chair provided an update on planning and preparations for the 2012 JDRC/NWA Concours, which will take place Saturday, August 11th at the new Le May Museum in Tacoma. The Silver Cloud hotel on Ruston Way has been reserved for out-of-town attendees and the reception (this is the same hotel we had for the 2011 Concours)--stay tuned to the website and future editions of the JagMag for updates. Following the January meeting, the Board reviewed several proposed updates to the club’s bylaws. These proposed updates are comprised of minor wording changes that reflect the club’s incorporation of email and the internet as alternate means of contacting the membership and providing publications. At the February meeting, Board members agreed to forward the proposed bylaw changes to the membership for approval by vote as laid out in Article IX of the JDRC/NWA bylaws. Instructions for online voting on the bylaw changes will be sent as well. Members without email addresses will be mailed printed copies of the proposed changes as well as ballot forms. The proposed changes will also be presented at the February dinner meeting. A motion was passed to accept several proposed changes to Exhibit C of the Bylaws. These changes entail updating the list of continuing committees and chair positions in Exhibit C to match the list on the front page of the roster. Changes to Exhibit C do not require approval by the membership. The Board nominated and approved several individuals as Honorary Members for 2012 and passed a motion to publish the list of these Honorary Members in the 2012 roster. Letters were also sent to these individuals acknowledging their honorary membership status. Club members are welcome to contribute Jaguar-related stories, articles, or photos for the JagMag; just contact the Editor or a Board Member. Also, anyone who is interested in helping out with any club event, please contact one of the Board Members--- you don’t need to be a Board Member to volunteer at an event. The next BOD Meeting will be held March 1st at Teo’s Mia Roma restaurant in Kenmore. Club members are welcome to attend the BOD Meetings. It’s time for you to start planning to drive the 2012 "Spring Thing Rally," and it should be a good one! This is a must-do event for JDRC/NWA members who love driving their cars on backcountry roads, observing their surroundings, and answering trivia. We will start at Jaguar of Tacoma again, but this year we will end up at the lovely home of Monte and Diane Powell at Dash Point, combining the rally with the much loved PowellsWood event. At the end of the rally the Powells will be hosting the club for lunch and a tour of the PowellsWood Gardens. PowellsWood, is a three acre garden that has been an ongoing labor of love for the Powells since the 1990’s. Today, PowellsWood is a beautiful, mature garden divided into separate themed “rooms” that provides a tranquil oasis from the bustle of nearby Federal Way. If you haven’t visited PowellsWood, this is a great opportunity not only to see the gardens, but to tour them with Monte and Diane and learn about the garden’s history. For a sneak peak and to learn more about PowellsWood please go to: www.powellswood.org This year’s Spring Thing Rally is a traditional Time/ Speed/Distance rally, but the rules are relaxed and the destination is known from the get-go. Even if you get lost, you can find your way to the end, and it will be worth the trip. For the serious competitors, there will be a chance to win fantastic prizes, and the first place finishers will have their name added to the everexpanding Spring Thing Rally trophy. Be warned, however, that the second place finishers also win the “prize” of getting to organize the 2013 Spring Thing Rally. "The Spring Thing Rally" this year is being organized by last year’s second place “winner” Paul Griffin, with help from the JDRC Board, as Paul has a commitment out-of-state on that day that will prevent him from attending the rally. The day begins at Jaguar of Tacoma with coffee and donuts at 9:00 a.m. The drivers’ meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. and first cars out will start at 10:00 a.m. Even if you’re not up to running the rally route, please feel free to come to the finish line at the Powell’s. There will be an awards presentation for rally participants, and Monte and Diane are graciously providing lunch for rallyists at approximately 1:00 pm. How really good I would soon find out because what was to happen that day would fill my life with love and companionship for the next 42 years. I worked for an electrical contracting company in the early seventies that had a summer picnic each year for the employees. The picnic was always at the owner’s home on the waterfront near Poulsbo. Today was the Saturday in August that the picnic was to take place. It was always a good time and I had no intention of missing it. After a ferry ride and a short drive I arrived at the gathering. I walked down the side of the house to the front and then out onto the large lawn which joined to the beach. The gang was there and I quickly located the beer and started greeting my coworkers. After only a few minutes of mingling I noticed a young woman sitting in a chair under a shade tree. Suddenly nothing else mattered. I don’t know if there is such a thing as love at first sight, but something certainly happened to me that moment. I studied the situation. None of the guys were paying any attention to her. Are they crazy? Could she possibly be here alone? I must meet her. I walked over, introduced myself and heard her name, Linda, for the first time. After that the picnic is mostly a blur. I know we swam, had food and drank beer everything you do at a picnic. I just remember talking to the most wonderful person I had ever met. After the picnic a group of us were going to a restaurant in Edmonds. I asked if she wanted the come and when she did I made sure I sat next to her. Later I asked if she would like to go to the motorcycle races the next day in Centralia that I was racing in. She said she would and then I informed her we would be going in my pickup truck that the muffler had just blown off and we were also taking the 13 year old son of a friend of mine. When the day of racing was over she sat in the middle on the way home next to me covered with mud and the 13 year old also covered with mud fast asleep on her right shoulder. Yes I am a romantic son of a gun. Volume 53 Issue 3 March 2012 PAGE 11 Linda Sue Papineau July 17,1947 - February,19,2012 So went the first two days of the rest of my life. We started dating and as fate would have it I couldn’t have found a more caring person. We married in January of 1972. From the beginning Linda raised my first daughter, Lisa, as if she were her own. In 1977 our second daughter Heather was born. Linda was a nurturing mother and our daughters show the results of her love and talents. They have their own families now and are continuing her mother’s legacy. Looking back I wish I had a dollar for all of the junior bowling games we went to-- Linda was the league Treasurer. Girls fast pitch baseball was also on the schedule and for eleven years we went to a ton of games-- Linda was the Assistant Coach for the first five years. There were gymnastic practices, camping trips and other shared interests too. She was a wonderful woman who never stood on the side line. She was always a part of her daughters’ activities. Many years later Linda found herself at the same bowling alleys and the same baseball fields watching her youngest grandson, Josh. Linda never turned her back on my interests either. Instead she would become as involved as I was. When I raced flat track motorcycles she would drive the van while I worked on the bikes in the back. Some summers we’d race three races a weekend. Before each race she would always help push the bikes to start them and then give me a kiss before each race. For a few years we raced the desert cross country races too. What great times camping out in the desert all weekend and then the big race on Sunday. Linda got good at driving me to the hospital too. She was always there to support me. I thought antique cars would be safer and less painful, so we bought one. We went to many antique car shows, events and parades. One Fourth of July parade the Sonic’s Weedle fell off Linda’s running board and crashed to the pavement. Linda jumped out and helped him up and ended up in the newspaper. Later I wanted an English Bull Terrier dog, so we got one. That wasn’t enough. We started breeding them and doing the dog show circuit. We ended up entering over 60 dog shows. Linda loved the dogs like they were her children and excelled at handling the dogs in the show ring. Volume 53 Issue 3 March 2012 PAGE 12 Linda Sue Papineau July 17,1947 - February,19,2012 Next I thought I’d try doing the demolition derbies. She didn’t even say no to that. My friends and I would build a car in the front driveway and then load it up and take it to the track. At the track before I’d wreck the car they’d run a dump to pass race. In this race you couldn’t pass the car in front of you without spinning the car out. Linda ran most of these races and won five first place trophies. Now that’s getting involved with your husband’s hobby. Putting a lot of work into a car and then wrecking it got old after a few years. Stock car racing sounded like the way to go. We decided to build a real stock car, a car we could hopefully use more than once. Again I couldn’t keep Linda out of the car. Before all the politically correct stuff they used to run “powder puff” races. These races only had woman drivers. The track wouldn’t let the woman race with the men. Linda did well and won several races. She was so smart. She’d work her way to the front and just sit there waiting for the leading drivers to make a mistake. Then she’d pounce. The last year they had powder puff races a women sued the track because she wanted to race the men. They eliminated powder puff races. Linda won the powder puff championship that year, so I guess she’s still reigning powder puff champion at Evergreen Speedway. Our stock-car racing took a period of nine years of which I was an officer in the association. Of course, by my side, was Linda as Secretary for five years. As if that wasn’t enough, she was the association’s Friday night track photographer for all nine years. I had always wanted the build an airplane, but we needed a place to do it. We bought a metal building about a mile away. Linda, Heather and I took the building a part piece-by-piece and loaded it on our car trailer. We reassembled it in our back yard. When we finished we decided that building an airplane took too long and made the decision to get back into cars. Linda had said that she always wanted a red Jaguar convertible. After a year we found an XJS she liked. Not knowing anything about Jaguars we joined the local Jaguar club. History does repeat itself and subsequently we bought more Jaguars and got really involved in the Jaguar Club. Linda enjoyed the Jaguars but most of all the people that owned them. And that takes us to today. I have the best two daughters and three grandsons a person could ever have. I also have the memories of the things Linda and I did together. Memories should be comforting, but thinking about them without her is hard. I wish I could hold her for just one more time, to kiss her and tell her how much I love her. I miss her so much. Modern Jaguars (like all luxury vehicles)' have a myriad of electronic and electrical systems. Most of these systems operate 24hours a day and create a parasitic drain on the battery. In the good old days it was just the clock, not any more. One way to minimize this battery drain is to lock it, even in the garage, this put your jaguar to sleep. If you don't, it stays awake for 45 minutes hoping you will return! Even locking it however, doesn't do enough to save your battery from discharging and thus sulfating up. Often even brand new jags (and especially used) are delivered with batteries that have been discharged numerous times and thus will have a very short life of months rather than 3-5 years. I am convinced that many of the strange gremlins that happen to our Jags can be traced to one source, the 12V battery. The car, driven by racing team owner Paul Gentilozzi, had a remapped ECU and supercharger modifications - taking power to 600bhp. The XFR was also fitted with a larger rear wing to aid aerodynamics. Jaguar's previous speed record for one of its cars was held by the XJ220 20 Volume 53 Issue 3 March 2012 PAGE Fastest Jaguar ever Record set at Bonneville XJ220 supercar was fastest before By Harry Metcalfe 12th January 2009 The longstanding Jaguar speed record has just been broken by the newXFR. The record was previously set by Martin Brundle in an XJ220 in 1992 at Nardo where he reached a speed of 217.1mph. The new Jaguar speed record is now a staggering 225.675mph after a mildly modified XFR achieved this speed at Bonneville Salt Flats on November 7 2008. The car was prepared by Rocketsports, a race preparation company based in East Lansing in Michigan. The engine was mildly modified by speeding up the supercharger slightly to give higher boost pressure, while the ECU modified accordingly. The result was 600bhp at the same peak power rpm as before. Other mods include a rear spoiler to reduce drag and a flat floor underneath the car. Amazingly, the gearbox and rear diff remained as standard. When they began the initial runs at Bonneville, the main problem Rocketsports faced was keeping traction at high speed and in the end 250lb of ballast was needed in the boot of the car to help press the rear tyres into the salt surface. The tyres were in fact standard Michelin Pilot Sport 2s running at 50psi to help minimize the drag on the relatively soft salt surface. The driver who did the run was Paul Gentilozzi, who is the founder of Rocketsports and he told evo the main aim was just to beat the XJ220’s time so the 225mph peak was a nice surprise to everyone. With the Salt Flats being at an altitude of 4200ft and the salt surface having a higher drag factor than regular tarmac a car capable at 200mph at sea level would only achieve 180mph on the salt flats so 225mh was a fantastic achievement. The engine was at 6650rpm when 225.675mph was reached and when they analyzed the data after the record run it showed they were still getting 6% wheel slip when the record speed was reached. Paul admitted he couldn’t use full throttle until he was beyond 150mph and then at 200mph the Jaguar would get a little ‘lose’ but once through this wobble stability returned and the top speed was achieved after only 9 runs. 21 Volume 53 Issue 3 March 2012 PAGE Fastest Jaguar ever Interested in Membership?
