The Castanea Railroad Station Much of Clinton County’s History is tied to railroads. Local railroads carrying logs, coal, and passengers jointed with larger systems, providing endless market potential. The former Lock Haven Station of the Beech Creek, Southern and Clearfield Railroad, located in Castanea and constructed in 1883, is a find example of Victorian architecture. Owned by the Clinton County Historical Society, it presently houses the Clinton Central Model Railroad Club and their layout of model trains and railroad memorabilia. The Barton Street School The Baton Street School House is undoubtedly one of the favorite sites to tour for visitors. It is operated as a “hands on” museum and is a favorite with the children housing memorabilia from local fire companies and military. Silent Eagle Sail Plane Rides The Silent Eagle is a Stemme S10 VT, perhaps the best sailplane in the history of aviation. There are only about 200 in the world. She takes off just like an ordinary airplane. Therefore she is safer, more efficient, and more affordable than a towlaunched glider. After about five minutes of climb, the engine gets shut off and the propeller folds into the nosecone. She then morphs into a pure sailplane. Unlike ordinary gliders, a guarantee times in the air because the engine can restart if needed to, although it is rarely necessary. For the same reason, I can also guarantee returning to the airport. Call for appointments and gift certificates at 660-6028. Can carry passengers up to 225lbs. More info at www.lockhaveneagle.com or email ed@lockhaveneagle.com. Fly outs from Piper Normally fly out of Piper Memorial Airport (KLHV) in Lock Haven, PA. One half hour rides consist of a 5-7 minute climb with the engine on followed by a silent descent of about 23-25 minutes. One hour rides involve a climb of about 10-13 minutes with a 47-50 minute silent descent. Cross-country and longer rides in excess of one hour are also available. Some people enjoy listening to music during their flights. If that is your preference, you should let me know what kind of music you like so that I can make it available. One half hour rides are $80. One hour rides are $120. Rides longer than one hour are $40 per half hour after the first hour. Museums Taking a trip to a museum is like a mini vacation through time. Sound intriguing? The Endless Mountains Region is fortunate to have in its midst many unique museums that contain a wide range of memorabilia from days of old, along with some hidden treasures of today. The museums in the Endless Mountains are fascinating. Behind every door, around every corner, you’ll find a treasure that will attract your attention for one reason or another – perhaps its age or size, peculiarity or familiarity, or maybe you’re drawn to it’s historical value. Takin’ it to the river The Susquehanna River is one of the Endless Mountains Region’s most prized possessions – not only for its natural beauty, but also for the recreational activities it provides. The north branch of this natural wonder flows effortlessly about 90-miles through the Endless Mountains – winding through Bradford, Wyoming and Susquehanna counties. It is the 16th largest river in the United States, and the largest tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The mighty Susquehanna is a perfect waterway for boating, with many access points along the banks for boaters to enter and exit the water as they please. The ride is a peaceful, relaxing experience, with the added pleasure of getting to see nature in the scenery and in the wildlife that resides in and around the river. Docking your boat and taking a few hours to explore the quaint towns and villages along the river is also a great way to enhance your trip’s memories. Any avid fishers out there? The Susquehanna River is swimming with all kinds of fish, including bass, muskellunge, panfish, and walleye. The (See TAKIN’, Page 14) Wine is a splendid thing The wine industry is flourishing in the Endless Mountains and there’s more than one way to experience the delicious, local, handcrafted wines unique to the region. The 21 Columbia-Montour: Carnivals, festivals and events all summer long 22 Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Saturday, May 16, 2009 Affordable, comfortable camping for all (ARA) — Every year, families across the country head outdoors to enjoy quality time together and appreciate the wonders of nature -- but sometimes the idea of “roughing it” is not as enjoyable for certain members of the family. You might assume an RV is the only way to bring the comforts of home to the campsite. Fortunately, thanks to modern technology, generators give you a great way to bring along those extra amenities and comforts without the expense associated with renting, purchasing or even driving your RV. Generators can give your camping adventure the comforts of home while their low noise, small size and light weight -- the lightest models currently weigh in at a mere 40 to 50 pounds -make them a pleasure to use and easy to transport regardless of whether you’re camping with a minivan, SUV or your standard pick-up truck. Even without an RV, a generator can supply the comforts and necessities of home along with some not-so-necessary items like lamps, microwaves, radios, hair dryers and even a TV and gaming system for the kids. Simple and easy to transport and operate, with a generator you’ll have the comfort and convenience of electricity and you’re ready to roll. One of the newest generators in this portable category is the EF2000iS from Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. Designed specifically for easy transport and a variety of uses, it is perfect for the campsite. If you have a larger appliance you can’t live without, the EF2000iS also comes with a parallel-use function which allows two units to plug into each other for double the output, while maintaining the maximum portability of two light weight generators to provide the power of one large, heavy generator. “The EF2000iS is the ideal lightweight camping companion,” says Colin Iwasa, power equipment sales manager at Yamaha. “At 2000 watts, it is all the power you need to run small electric appliances. More importantly, it is quiet, versatile and can run for up to eight hours on less than a gallon of gas. It’s even powerful enough to run your refrigerator, television and some lights at home if you have a power outage.” Of course, it is always important to use generators responsibly and safely, especially around the campsite. To keep your family safe, Yamaha provides a few guidelines for proper generator operation: • Never use a generator indoors or in partially enclosed areas. A portable generator uses a combustion engine just like your car, which produces toxic, poisonous carbon monoxide exhaust gases. Set it up outdoors in a well-ventilated, dry area away from any car or trailer windows, doors and other air intakes. • Read the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation prior to use. This booklet comes with your generator. Additional copies are available at your local dealership. • Keep generators away from fires and never fuel the generator while it’s running. Fuel liquids are flammable and dangerous if ingested, so store them far away from your family’s common areas and open flames. Fuel can also be sparked by a running generator, so turn off the engine before refueling. • Use a carbon monoxide detector. Running generators create carbon monoxide, one of the most hazardous side effects of generator use. To be safe, install a carbon monoxide detector in your trailer or, if camping outdoors, keep the generator far away from any tents or enclosed spaces. • Avoid electric shock. To prevent electric shock, never touch the generator with wet hands. Also, do not operate a generator in rain or snow in order to keep the generator dry. • Watch out for hot engines and mufflers. Avoid placing flammable materials near the exhaust outlet during operation, and keep any generator at least three feet away from buildings or other equipment to avoid overheating. Always carry the generator by its handles. As long as it’s operated safely, a generator can help make you and your family a little more comfortable while “roughing it” under the stars -- and you’ll look forward to many more trips to come. 410 Farley Circle LEWISBURG (570) 522-9900 M-F 9-6 / Sat 9-4 Why buy from Brookpark Golf? In fact, starting the day with foods loaded with ingredients rich in iron, fiber, omega-3 essential fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants and other nutrients is essential to keep travelers focused while keeping stamina levels up when on the road. To keep those energy levels cranked, here are a few tips: • Stay hydrated. It's possible to think you are hungry and make a poor snack choice when in fact you are thirsty. Be sure to have drinking water available throughout the day. • Snack smart. Before heading out to catch a train or plane, pack a snack of vegetables, fruit, string cheese or low-fat pretzels. Whole grain crackers are also a good choice, as is a sandwich made with whole grain bread. • Prepare for your big day with a good breakfast. Research shows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day (aiding in performance, stamina, weight loss and heart health, according to the experts at the American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association), yet many Americans skip breakfast. Smart hotels like Hilton Garden Inn (HGI) make it easier for their guests to eat sensibly while traveling. The upscale midpriced brand recently worked with "Top Chef" star Chris "CJ" Jacobson to develop a breakfast menu with ingredients that can maximize energy and stamina in a way that is both sensible and tasty. "When designing the menu, I relied heavily on my own nutritional habits on the road as a professional athlete," said Jacobson. The resulting "BIG DAY Breakfast"™ menu features dishes geared to keep travelers going, including "The Hearty Hash," which combines beef brisket (or seared tofu), sweet potatoes, leeks, eggs and whole wheat bread; and a granola and flaxseed parfait made with Greek or plain yogurt, honey and fresh strawberries. With any luck and some smart choices, travelers may return from vacation eating well and in better shape than before. To check out the recipes that are part of the "BIG DAY Breakfast" menu, visit www.hgi.com/bb. The Art of Wildlife Preservation We have a variety of gifts for that hard-to-buy-for person, including...
