Report to the Community 2005-2006 Carteret Community College : s d n e i r F r Dea We all believe in Carteret County, and in the following pages of this report we will show how your support of the mission of Carteret Community College is changing lives for the better and how your involvement is contributing to the future of our community. Whether you are a large company, a small business employer, a student, or an individual member of the community, you are making a positive difference through your belief in the job training and educational efforts at the college. This past year, CCC was recognized as a Superior Community College by the North Carolina Community College System. With 100 percent of employers surveyed satisfied with our customized training for their employees, and all of our graduates finding jobs, we are extremely proud of the state’s recognition. Thank you for all your help. Without your support, we would not be nearly as successful. We welcome your ideas and your continued involvement in your community college. Sincerely, Joe Barwick President, Carteret Community College Carteret Community College Board of Trustees Table of Contents Page 2 Our Employers Believe Page 4 Our Community Believes Page 6 Our Students Believe Page 8 We Believe Page 10 You Believe Page 12 The CCC Foundation Believes Page 13 Grants Awarded Page 14 The CCC Foundation Inc. Recent survey results show employers are overwhelming satisfied with the training of our graduates. The business community’s satisfaction and support are also seen through its contributions and involvement. North Carolina Marine Training and Education Center (NCMARTEC) American Suzuki Motor Corp. This past year, numerous restaurants, hospitality/ tourism related businesses, and individuals contributed food, supplies, equipment, and personnel to the Culinary School, including: AJ’s Seafood All Park Corporation Amos Mosquitoes Mr. William P. Boulia Bally Refrigerated Boxes Bistro by the Sea Café Zito Carolina Chocolate Festival Carteret General Hospital Channel Marker Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant Coastal Carolina Heating & Air Coral Bay Club Dock House Habitat for Humanity Resale Store Mr. Donald Hilbert Dr. Pamela Hilbert Mr. Jerry Jones Key West Seafood Company Lebanon Valley Cuisine Mr. Bruno Marino Ms. Mary Marino Piedmont Natural Gas Ribeyes Royal Pavillion Resort Sharpies Ms. Evanglene Reels Rex LLC Royal Pavillion Mr. & Mrs. James Swartzenberg Shepard’s Point Williams Fine Dining The CCC Foundation paid for and helped renovate the Culinary School building so it could 3 be used as a hospitality/tourism training resource for the region. Our Community Believes Six years ago, at the turn of the century, when nearly 70 percent of the voters in Carteret County voted for $14 million worth of new facilities and renovation projects, they were sending a message. It was a public demand that their community have expanded training opportunities in business technologies, health sciences and marine trades. This past year, CCC kept its promise by opening the three-story Wayne West building and creating new basic skills training areas, five state-of-the-art computer labs, and allowing the implementation of the Associate Degree in Nursing program. The facilities also provide expanded training areas for other health science programs like Emergency Medical Sciences, Medical Assisting, Practical Nursing Radiography, and Respiratory Therapy. The North Carolina Marine Training and Education Center (NC MARTEC) and the renovated Robert Howard Aquaculture Center also are preparing students for employment opportunities in our coastal marine environment. CCC is an integral part of the society of Carteret County. More than 10,000 people visited the campus last year. Many of them enjoyed programs held in the college’s Joslyn Hall auditorium, which is scheduled for renovation in 2006. With grants from the Golden Leaf Foundation, the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, and North Carolina’s Bionetwork, our state, region and community believe in what CCC is doing to create new job opportunities, protect the environment, and take advantage of emerging technologies. 4 nter ure Ce t l u c a qu y CCC A ster Hatcher y O Carteret Catch A case study in community cooperation Over the past couple of years, the college brought together a group of community volunteers who have become focused on raising the value of local seafood products harvested by Carteret County fisherman. Represented by commercial fishermen, seafood distributors, restaurant owners, scientists, tourism experts and educators, the group developed a marketing campaign for a brand of seafood known as Carteret Catch. This year, the group created the non-profit organization that will manage the cooperative effort to establish a niche market. Funded through a grant from the Rural Community College Initiative, the program is already raising the visibility of local seafood products at events like the North Carolina Seafood Festival and in local Carteret County restaurants. 5 Our Students Believe “I started off taking basic classes which prepared me for my major.” Just walk into any business, government office or institution in Carteret County, and you will find someone who has been a student at Carteret Community College. Each year, the college distributes more than $2.5 million in financial aid to its students. These awards include federal, state, and local grants, scholarships, and other programs. A recent survey showed that 98 percent of CCC graduates are satisfied with the goals they achieved, and that 97 percent said they are satisfied with the academic programs offered. More than 90 percent of the CCC students who transferred to state colleges and universities have proven they are equal or better prepared than their peers by achieving a 2.0 grade point average or higher at their senior institutions. Hunter Lupton is not only a national champion surfer from Carteret County, he also is a graduate of the CCC Radiography program, and most recently a graduate of the new Medical Sonography certificate program. As an employee of Carteret General Hospital, Lupton works in the Radiography lab, and represents a wide-range of health science graduates who are finding good paying jobs in the growing health care field. That’s why the faculty and staff of Carteret Community College are dedicated to customer focus, constant improvement, and teamwork. Last year, our empoyees looked for ways to better serve our community by applying for outside grants and taking on projects that have a direct impact on our area. Many people in our county find the question fearful to consider. Will our young people have more or less job opportunities? Will our waters and marshes be healthier or more degraded? Will the people who move here to retire, or build here for leisure, find the high quality services they need? Will boats and boating continue to provide a livelihood for so many? 28 At Carteret Community College, we try to keep track of current trends but always with an eye on the horizon. You expect us to always put the needs of this county first, and your continued generous support is an indication that you believe we do. Therefore, as we contemplate the future of this great county, you should know about some of the things accomplished and planned by your community college. Marine Propulsion Instructor David Eastwood (right) talks with several Yamaha dealership owners and service technicians during the annual Yamaha Product update held at NCMARTEC. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) students test one of the donated heat pumps used in the HVAC evening program. Donations of modern equipment have made a positive difference in the quality of training. First of all, we know that the population is growing, and that it is growing older. So this past year we added an associate degree nursing program to our existing licensed practical nursing program. We could not operate two nursing programs without the amazing contributions of many donors. Bill Christian’s challenge grant of $100,000 brought other donations that helped cover program startup costs. Carteret County General Hospital not only helped us raise thousands of dollars, they have established the CCGH Endowed Chair in Nursing to underwrite a faculty position in the program. This is a good example of you believing in us, and all of us working together to give our young people access to better jobs that will serve our changing population. With billions of dollars of new construction in the works across Carteret County, we are renovating college space to provide training in construction technologies. We have already upgraded our welding equipment and have With the increase in population and second home owners, the county is experiencing an increase in upscale restaurants and other facilities that serve a leisure economy. Our culinary program has just graduated its first class, and virtually all of the graduates who wanted jobs were employed. We are expecting another full class to start in the fall. And in addition, we are exploring additional training for all levels of service workers. Your community college does not have a crystal ball; but one thing is certain, whatever is to become of our county, Carteret Community College will continue to play a major role in trying to make it the best for our citizens. Thank you for believing in us. Nursing Instructor Mary Briley (right), the recipient of the Carteret General Hospital Endowed Faculty Chair, works with students in the Associate Degree in Nursing program. Carteret General Hosptial’s $198,000 donation and Bill Christian’s $100,000 gift are making the nursing program at Carteret Community College one of the best in the state. started a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) class. By the end of the year, we hope to add plumbing, electrical, and general construction courses. As a member of the Marine Science and Education Partnership (MSEP), Carteret Community College will continue to pursue opportunities that will lead to commercial ventures to bring biotechnology jobs to the region. Carteret County has more marine science assets than any other part of the state, as well as a newly expanded aquarium and maritime museum. With vision and planning, these assets could lead to significant business expansion. Carteret County is a boat-rich environment. As long as people have the skills to make, manufacture, rig, or repair boats, they can find work here. North Carolina’s Marine Training and Education Center (NCMARTEC) is already establishing a reputation up and down the East Coast, and this year we will greatly expand training opportunities to make sure the boating industry has a work force, and the work force has skills. Students learn precision woodworking techniques in the Yacht Joinery course. 29 The Carteret Community College 2005-2006 Report to the Community was paid for by the Carteret Community College Foundation, Inc.
