The other apostles disregarded the reports from the women who had seen the empty tomb and heard the angels because “their story seemed like nonsense and they did not believe them.” But Peter took action. He got up and ran to see the evidence and “went home amazed at what had happened.” On this Easter day, we have a choice to make. We too have heard a remarkable report. We have been told that two thousand years ago, a man named Jesus defeated death and rose from the grave. To many people in today’s world, this sounds like nonsense, just like it did when it first happened. Some would like to dismiss the story entirely as a myth at best, or an outright lie at worst. Others try to spiritualize the miracle, suggesting that the Resurrection narrative is a story that is meant to symbolize the power of God, but whether or not Jesus actually rose from the dead is irrelevant. Finally, there are those who simply believe—those who, with Peter, make an act of faith and choose to take the Gospel literally. PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED Richard Medina Grace Mugno Francis J. Coyne Carmela D’Angelis Charles Roderka This of course is the Christian way. It was not the Crucifixion that brought confidence to the early followers of Christ; it was the Resurrection. This momentous event has always made all the difference! We will only water down our faith if we reduce Easter to anything other than a true miracle. But to accept it as such will bolster our faith. As St. Paul wrote in the Epistle to the Romans, “Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.” This Easter, may we experience the great joy of new life in the risen Christ. -3- Pastor’s Pen St. Anthony of Padua Church 20 Cheshire Place East Northport, NY 11731 (631) 261 1077 “No matter what, God wants us to be happy, not sad.” “I have always believed that God never gives a cross to bear larger than we can carry. No matter what, He wants us to be happy, not sad. Birds sing after a storm. Why shouldn’t we?” Those words were spoken by a mother who had lost three sons tragically. Her name was Rose Kennedy. Her son Joe was killed in World War II. Her son Robert was killed while serving in the U.S. Senate. Her son John was killed while he was president. Yet, through it all, as we see in her words, her faith in God helped her. Rose attended Mass every Sunday and often during the week. For her, Jesus’ resurrection was a great source of consolation. God knows that life is not always easy for you either. So he sent his son Jesus to take on death on the cross, and put an end to it in the resurrection. He did this so that you could have hope, even while carrying your own crosses. Because He loves you. Easter is the time in which we celebrate God’s great love for you. So have hope. Remember, “No matter what, He wants us to be happy, not sad!” Happy Easter to you and your family Msgr. Joseph Mirro Rev. Vian Ntegerejlmana Rev. Catholic Charities' Talbot House serves the needs of families in crisis due to substance abuse. In 2008, Bill received a call from his son Michael who was away at medical school. Michael was in crisis — addicted to drugs and plummeting out-ofcontrol. Searching for a safe environment to get Michael help, Bill found Talbot House. At first Michael didn't want to stay — but 22 days after he moved in — Michael was a different person. "Talbot House gave our son back to us. It's a wonderful resource. Michael fully credited Talbot House and his counselor with his recovery. Michael went back to medical school with the intention of working in the area of addiction medicine." Michael's life was cut short when, on the way to visit his grandmother, his car was hit head-on by an impaired driver. Inspired by his son's desire to help those with addiction, today Bill volunteers at Talbot House as a spiritual education counselor, helping residents address the topics and events that may be holding them back from recovery. "Michael said he owed his life to Talbot House. I know I belong here carrying on his work." Catholic Ministries Appeal P.O. The celebration of the Vigil is in keeping with the Jewish tradition of celebrating the day from sundown to sundown. Thus, the Saturday evening Vigil Mass is a Sunday Mass. Easter is also a season that lasts 50 days and ends on Pentecost Sunday, which is an observance based on the second chapter of the Book of Acts where the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles. This day is considered the birthday of the Church.
