NEWS & VIEWS FROM STEWART HARRIS
CHAIRMAN, THE OWNERS CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE
Dear Fellow Owners
As we welcome the many non-resident Owners
who visit the Clubhouse through July and August,
the refurbishment of the rear dining terrace is
nearing completion, the last phase of work being
the installation of new toldos on the remainder of
the elevated section of the terrace.
Last month I announced the launch of the first
ever Clubhouse Photographic Competition and
details of how to enter, together with winners’
prizes, are listed later in this newsletter. I hope
Owners will support the competition and look
forward seeing entries flooding in over the
summer.
Owners will also have noticed that landscape
designer Paco de Lara and his team have been
busy installing a variety of new plants and palms,
both around this terrace and also in the beds
located on the lower level. The result is beautiful
and will only get better as the various plants
become established.
Finally, atmospheric up-lighting has been
positioned in the border around the terrace and
stylish new lights installed on the toldos and the
dining room wall. The overall effect is stunning
and surely seals the Clubhouse’s reputation as the
‘destination of choice’ for La Manga Club Owners.
Live summer music continues in the club lounge
through July, with popular Jenna McNeil
appearing every Tuesday and Thursday night.
Looking forward, Gill Schofield, our Events
Manager, has organised a full programme of
events for the autumn and winter. These include
the return of acclaimed author Paul Bennett, a
Dani Vivaldi Magic Night, a DayBreak excursion to
Rebate for a gourmet lunch, a trip to the Secret
Moorish Valley and also two overnight
StayBreaks. One will be a Spanish city river cruise
in early December and the second a skiing trip to
the Sierra Nevada in late February. Details of
other events will be announced in due course.
With best wishes,
Stewart Harris

for our photographic competition!
Inside the Clubhouse, the dining room has been
redecorated, with curtains, paintings, plants,
lights and new menus introduced, plus a new
sound system installed in the Club lounge.

Outside, thanks to the generosity of Sue Whelan
the children’s play area has been completely
refurbished and on the dining terrace there are
new toldos to provide shade during the heat
ofthe day and to keep the chill off diners through
the evening.
Finally, at night time the overall effect is enhanced
by a new lighting system, which features uplighters in the border to maximise the impact of
the plants and atmospheric lights mounted on the
toldos . Please enjoy.

REBATE GOURMET LUNCH, 7th SEPTEMBER
The town of
Rebate is a calm,
tranquil place,
located in the
heart of the
Sierra of
Escalone. However, many years ago it was very
different and people from the surrounding region
used to retreat there when they needed to shelter
from pirate attacks on the nearby the coast.
Named after the town, the famous Rebate
restaurant is surrounded by aromatic lemon and
orange groves, which provide a fitting backdrop
to the restaurant’s renowned cuisine. Spectacular
mountain views and beautiful countryside,
abounding with eagles, kestrels, owls, rabbits,
partridges, squirrels and ducks, add to the very
special atmosphere.
Housed in old,
restored village
houses, the
restaurant is run by
the Van Iseghem
family. In the early
days they ran it as
an agricultural
holding. However,
it wasn’t long before their passion for food
emerged and the idea of the restaurant was
conceived, it opening its doors for the first time in
2002. Today, lovers of gourmet food from across
Spain and
beyond flock
to the
Rebate
restaurant in
their droves.
The Rebate
DayBreak
will start with
breakfast at the Clubhouse, then shopping at the
fabulous La Zenia complex, followed by a
gourmet lunch, which includes a flamenco floor
show, at the Rebate restaurant - price 49€ pp.

SIERRA NEVADA STAYBREAK, FEBRUARY 2017
Sol y Nieve is a purpose built ski village, situated
on a plateau, high in Spain’s famous Sierra
Nevada. It has a plaza, ski/sports shops, a tourist
office, a ski school station and lift pass offices, In
short, everything skiers could need. It also
boasts a fantastic atmosphere, which is created
by the many ski bars, restaurants and hotels,
where people party and ski.
The village is where the skiing begins and ends.
The main lift runs from the centre of the village to
Borreguiles in the heart of the mountains and
facing the Veleta peak. At 3.398m Borreguiles is
the highest ski station in the Sierra Nevada and
often boasts sun and snow well into April, unusual
given it is also the most southerly ski station in
Europe.
Mulhacen, Veleta’s sister mountain, at 3.481m is
even higher and both guard the south west facing
slopes. These offer a combined and varied ski
area comprising 120 pistes covering over 105
kms of green (very easy), blue (cruising), red
(quite difficult) and black (experienced skiers
only) pistes. Access is via all types of lifts, from
magic carpets for beginners, to high speed six
man chair lifts for experienced skiers. All stay
open until late afternoon, thereby ensuring a full
day’s skiing.
From absolute beginners to experienced skiers,
the proposed Clubhouse Sierra Nevada
StayBreak is designed for those who have always
wanted to combine a trip to La Manga Clubwith a
few nights skiing.
Owners will be escorted by an experienced and
knowledgeable skier, and be based at a delightful
three star hotel in the centre of Sol y Nieve
(double, or twin rooms available) on a half-board
meal plan, with delicious local food served buffetstyle at breakfast and dinner.
You don’t have to be a skier to join us, just a fun
loving person who has always wondered what
skiing is all about. We will organise everything,
equipment rental, guiding, ski school, walking, or
if you prefer simply sitting in the sunshine with a
cool drink. If you are 70, or over, you will get a
free ski pass. Simply take the tele-cabin and come
up the mountain for lunch in an amazing place,
with views to die for.
The plan is to travel by coach. Stay in the three
star Ziryab Montana Hotel for three nights,
allowing time for four and a half days sunshine
and snow activity mid-week, late February 2017.
If this StayBreak interests you, Please email Gill
Schofield, the Clubhouse Events Manager on >
events@lmc-ownersclubhouse.com. If enough
people want to go, we plan to hold ski evenings
to explain all the various details and prices which
apply.

CLUBHOUSE FRIENDS, MARION & ROY GARDENER
When this feature was discussed with the
newsletter editor, Marion and Roy's names
quickly came to mind. Everyone knew the couple
who regularly enjoy their lunch at the Clubhouse
and are great supporters of our DayBreaks, and
entertainment programme. They seemed an
obvious choice for our July Clubhouse Friends
feature.
In 2003, realising that they were enjoying La
Manga Club so much, Roy and Marion decided to
buy their current Monte Verdi home, which
released their Los Olivos property to be rented
out!
Roy and Marion love the way the Clubhouse staff
regard them as family (a feeling which is
mutual) .They believing that Joaquin
is a good manager, and that even
under extreme pressure he ‘holds it
all together’.
Marion's favourite dish is the
beautifully presented fillet of sole,
especially when accompanied by
Torres Chilean Sauvignon
Blanc, their favourite wine!
Roy and Marion Gardner discovered La Manga
Club in 1998, when they paid their first visit on a
Boeing Corporate Weekend. They recall meeting
Richard Lemmer, the founder of Barwell Travel,
who advised them and three other couples to buy
in Los Olivos, believing that the development
would be an ideal buy-to-let investment. All four
couples, including Roy and Marion, did exactly
that, with the four purchases being completed
virtually overnight. Many happy years holidaying
at la Manga Club followed.
“Their very special thanks go to ‘all the Clubhouse back
room boys and girls’, unseen for most of the time, but
certainly not forgotten by this charming couple.”
Roy and Marion have
reserved a table for the 16th
August at the Clubhouse
dining terrace, in order to
celebrate their son's 50th
birthday. Asked if he would be
flying to Murcia for the event,
Marion said that on this
occasion he would be ‘flown’,
unlike the last time he
arranged to meet them (at
Gatwick, en route to Dubai),
when he was the pilot of their
A380 Airbus plane!
A fabulous footnote, Roy absolutely
insisted
during this happy interview that their very special
thanks go to ‘all the Clubhouse back room boys
and girls’, unseen for most of the time, but
certainly not forgotten by this charming couple.

PEPE OLMOS PROPERTY REFURBISHMENT
Selecting a reliable contractor to carry out
refurbishment work is always a challenge,
especially in a foreign country, where different
work procedures apply and when the whole
process can seem more than a little daunting.
The secret is to do plenty of research, talk to other
owners and, importantly, establish which
contractors they would recommend …. a satisfied
customer is always a good sign. This is exactly
what Jan Barraclough and her partner Mike Baker
did when they were about to start the
refurbishment of their Bellaluz penthouse
apartment.
Jan became a widow at a very early age, so in
addition to running her business, she had two
young sons to care for. Later, when the boys
married and grandchildren were on the horizon,
Jan decided to buy a Bellaluz holiday home.
Many happy times followed.
The decor was fine for family holidays, but with
the grandchildren growing up, late last year Jan
decided that the penthouse needed a complete
make-over. So, despite her knowledge of the
building trade, she still talked to friends and
compared companies, before eventually
choosing Pepe Olmos, a long established La
Manga Club builder, to do the work.
The refurbishment was completed within an
impressive nine weeks and involved fitting two
new bathrooms, updating the kitchen, removing
walls, installing french windows, creating much
needed extra storage, and redecoration from top
to bottom. Jan was pleased she took the trouble to do her
homework (running the family building company
in Yorkshire, she understood the need for
checking out different options!) and was very
happy with Pepe Olmos, her choice of contractor,
whose advice and professionalism she really
appreciated. Her advice to other owners
considering similar work? Don’t leave it to
chance, do your research and always get
recommendations from satisfied customers.
