Man O man, the year just keeps on moving along. Here it is spring time already and that means a lot of things to do and plenty of dinners and events to come out to here at our Shrine Temple. Not to mention those famous Vandalia Onions will be there soon. Let’s do our best to get them picked up and distributed to our patrons as timely as possible. The Divan and I would like to thank everyone who came out to the Spring Ceremonial. From the new Nobles and their Ladies, to everyone who came out and took part in some way to welcome our new members into our Fraternity. We can’t go wrong having fun with our friends, let’s keep it up! If you will remember last month’s article, I left off with a reminder that you can’t always decide what happens to you, but you can decide how you react to what happens to you. I was reminded of that when I heard this story about “The Attitude of Three Hairs”. There was once a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today,” so she did and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw she had only two hairs on her head. “HMM,” she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today,” and she did and she had a grand day. The next morning, she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw she had only one hair left on her head. “Well,” she said, “Today I’m going to wear my hair in a ponytail.” So she did and it was a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “YEAH!” she exclaimed, “I don’t have to fix my hair today!” That’s the attitude I’m shooting for! Lady Teresa and I hope you all have a great May and we hope to see you at the Za-Ga-Zig’s Nobility Ball on May 14th! COME ON Za-Ga-Zig, LET’S HAVE A BALL! Fraternally yours, TEMPLE OFFICE HOURS: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Published monthly by Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple 1100 Shriners Parkway Altoona, Iowa 5009-2117 Members please send change of address to the Shrine Temple as soon as you know your new domicile. Steve Hall, Potentate ON THE COVER . . . . . . . May 8th is Mothers Day. Be sure to do something special for all the moms in your life. FezB Club News By Dan Baker I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Steve Hall for selecting me as the Honoree at the April 23rd Spring Ceremonial. I would also like to congratulate all of the newly admitted Nobles and their Ladies and welcome them into our Fraternity. Please don’t be strangers – everyone has some part of themselves that they can contribute toward the greater good of the Fraternity. Food for thought for all Nobles – Many things stir our emotions: worship, silence, a kiss on the forehead from our loved one, our children’s laughter, the voice of a treasured friend. It seems that most of the time, what awakens our feelings is less heart-warming: being misunderstood, driving on icy roads, sleepless nights and customer assistance numbers that do not let us speak to a human. Our emotions are not always accurate reflections of reality. They are not always truth’s vocal twin. I can share this truth, the joy each of us gets from witnessing what the Shrine has done and continues to do for our Hospital Children is real. Continue to support the Shrine in any way you can and get a dose of real emotion! The April 20th Ladies Nite dinner of ham balls was hosted by Noble Cory Stoneburner and his Lady Jenny. This has always been a great home-cooked meal and well attended. The Stoneburner’s did not disappoint! Next up is the May 18th Ladies Nite dinner hosted by the Stecker Family. The main course will consist of Prime Rib and is always on of our bestattended dinners. Please RSVP to Noble Scott Hull (515230-2083) no later than Friday, May 13 if you plan to attend. Rumor has it that the June 15th Ladies Nite dinner will be hosted by Noble Dan It’s that time .... ATTENTION UNITS & CLUBS Call the Shrine Office to get your shifts scheduled for your Unit or Club to drive Golf Carts DO IT TODAY!!! Brogden and Lady Cindy with the assistance of Noble Dean House and Lady Ruth. On the menu – Steak and all the trimmings. We have not done this for several years but I am certain you won’t want to miss this one! Please RSVP to Dan Brogden at (515) 432-2593 no later than June 11. If you have missed out, mark your calendar for the 3rd Wednesday of every month in 2016! You will not go away hungry or dissatisfied. Please remember that Mother’s Day is May 8th and Father’s Day is June 19th. Take some time to honor these special people in your life! June 26 th is the Za-Ga-Zig Family Picnic. Please plan to attend. This is always a great time with lots of activities and fun for the kids (and others who are young at heart). There are a lot of great activities coming up in the near future. Please take a close look at your Feetprints magazine every month and pick out at least one function that you will attend that month. You will be glad you did! Please remember that the regular FezB Club meetings are always held on the 2nd Monday of the month at 8:00 p.m. following the Mirza Lodge meeting. A special shout out to the Tux Brigade and the Greeter’s for helping us, as well as our ladies, all together we served 268 that night. With out all of your help, we could not have done it! Thank you all. We were also asked when we would do the next one. Perhaps this fall, but we will need even more help since so many of you wanted to attend and couldn’t make it! Our dues are only $12/year, and you will be joining a great bunch of Shrine Mason’s for some fun in the outdoors! You will get your money’s worth believe me. We are open for ideas and just like the Marines; we need a few more good Men to join our ranks! With all that being said we thought we would let you know what the Sportsman’s Unit is looking at doing the rest of the year. Here are some ideas we are evaluating right now: • A Fishing outing to Lake Rathbun, or elsewhere, if you have a boat, let us know, we would love to have you join us! • Shooting Outing at the New Pioneer Gun club for skeet, trap, or sporting clays- with a steak fry to follow it! • Camping and Fishing for Catfish at Lake Red-Rock • Fall Dove hunt Sept. 1st the opener • Going on the Shrine fishing trip to Cass Lake (contact Norm Vander Zyl 515-480-6089 to get it on this) • A Pheasant Hunt this fall • A Duck ,or Goose Hunt this fall • Ice fishing in the Winter Come out the Shrine, the 4th Wed. of each month, at 7:00pm, and see what we are all about. We might be cooking up something to eat, and there’s always something to wash it down. We’d love to hear from you, and tell us what you’d like to see us do to add to the fun! Chocolate Champagne Silent & Live Auction FundraisLQJ(YHQW Looking for a way to get more involved" The Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Chocolate and Champagne Auction is looking for volunteers. We are always looking for good people who want to be a part of an amazing event. Contact Joe White at 971-1827 Friday Sept. 30, 2016 Doors Open at 5:30 Live Auction at 8:00 13 Chocolate and Champagne Auction By Joe White It is time once again to mark your calendars for the Za-Ga-Zig Chocolate and Champagne Auction. I am extremely excited to once again be the chairman for such a great event. Many of you have probably been to charity auctions, regardless of the organization holding the event, it is easy to get swept up in the pageantry. Whether they are auctioning off hand-made one-of-a-kind items or a special experience at an event, either way it is hard not to get carried away. The 2016 Champagne and Chocolate Auction promises to be an amazing event. The doors will open at 5:30pm and as soon as you walk in the door you will have the chance to win one of five raffle items, just by dropping your ticket in a box. The West end of the Shrine Temple will be full of tables displaying the many silent auction items that you can bid on. Silent auction tables will be open until 7:30pm. Back again this year, we will be hosting Las Vegas style casino games where you will be able to play for chances to win raffle tickets. Everyone is a winner in our casino room and every time you play, you will receive at least 1 raffle ticket. The more tickets you win, the better your chances for winning more prizes. We will have a pasta dinner available to those who wish to have dinner on us. We will have lots of yummy chocolate desserts and of course our large milk chocolate fountain with plenty of tasty treats to dip. We have also decided to bring back our wine tasting table this year. You will be able to sample different wines and how they pair with your favorite chocolate treats, then you will be able to buy a bottle, or two of your favorite wine from the Oasis. There are two main items needed in order to make any auction successful, great items to bid on and supportive people to attend the auction. If you or someone you know has the ability to donate to our auction please contact me or one of the other auction committee members, we would love to hear from you and we are willing to accept any donation. Then come out and have a great time at our auction. Don’t come alone, bring your family, bring your friends, bring anyone who is willing to come out and support our cause. By Dutch Koch, Membership Committee Congratulations to the new Nobles of the Dan Baker Spring Ceremonial on April 23rd. I hope you had as much fun crossing the hot sands as we had watching you! Thanks, also, to all who made this event possible! First and foremost, the top-line signers who rounded up such a good bunch of candidates. Obviously, a Ceremonial without plenty of quality candidates is no good, and you guys really raised the bar for our next Ceremonial! And thanks to all the who were involved in the many aspects of the day… the Greeters, the Directors Staff, the Tux Brigade, the Potentate’s Aides, the Ritual Staff and the Ceremonial Master all had their work cut out for them, and all came through with flying colors. I challenge every Noble to think of your best non-shrine (or non-masonic) pal, and invite them to a Temple event, and enroll them on “beashrinernow.com”. Our Shrine is too much fun, and the Shriners Hospitals for Children are too important to be kept a secret from your buddies any longer! Oriental Band News By Paul Freeman Eight members of your Oriental Band caravaned 138 miles of desert sands to KAABA, the Oasis of Davenport, to perform the most beautiful and honorable Mandarin Degree. At the will and pleasure of KAABA‘S Potentate Thomas Hodges, 27 poor Chinese neophites were bestowed upon them the generosity and kindness of the wise and charitable Mandarin and are now coolies of Za-Ga-Zig Tong “O-69.” Your Oriental Band will again be performing this degree on May 21st at 2622 NE 80th St. in Altoona. For those of who you recognize this address, it is the residence of Jeff Funaro. He has graciously agreed to open his home to the Mandarin who will share his kindness and generosity to those neophites who desire to meet him and to those coolies who already have. Social will begin at 1:00 and degree will begin at 2:00. There will be light snacks and a cash bar. Contact Paul Freeman @ 515-975-1753 or burtonsbuddy@yahoo.com to secure your opportunity. Like other degrees, there is a one-time cost of $20.00. See the ad in this month‘s FEETPRINTS.
