Transport and useful information
14:04 transport By car You are strongly recommended not to drive in Paris – it is far preferable to use public transport. However, here are some elementary traffic rules: in France you drive on the right; safety belts are compulsory for passengers in both the front and back seats; don’t sound your horn; and remember to bring your international Green Card insurance. ➜ Speed limits Urban areas: 50 km/h (30mph) Ring roads: 80 km/h (50mph) Main roads: 90 km/h (56mph) Motorways: 130 km/h (80mph) and 110 km/h (68mph) in wet weather. ➜ Driving tips Do not use bus lanes even in heavy traffic. Do not double park, park in any no-stopping zones (“axes rouges”) or park in areas reserved for deliveries or the disabled. ➜ Traffic information Traffic information for the Île-de-France region Tel: 0 826 022 022 (0.15€/min) www.bison-fute.equipement.gouv.fr ➜ Parking Street parking is limited to 2 hours. The average hourly rate varies between 1 and 3€ per hour. ➜ Car parks Public (paying) car parks throughout the city range between 1 and 5€ per hour. In case of difficulty, see p.137 (contact number and address of the “préfecture de police”). There is a guide listing all the car parks in Paris. There is a reduced-price pass for children from 4 to 11 years old. ➜ Paris Visite (zones 1 to 3 and 1 to 5) is on sale at main metro stations, RER and SNCF train stations in Île-de-France, at Parisian airports and at the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau. By metro, RER and bus Bus The Parisian public transport authority (RATP) operates 16 metro lines identifiable by their number and colour. The RER (suburban express railway), with lines A, B, C, D and E (RATP and SNCF), covers Paris and its surrounding region. It connects with the metro in Paris and some SNCF (main-line rail network) lines. Bus routes are numbered, and mostly operate from 6.30am to 8.30pm. Certain lines run in the evening until 0.30am or later. Information and maps at individual bus stops will help you plan your itinerary. Tickets are the same as those used in the metro. Metro Times: first train: 5.30am, last train: 0.30am Information, times, fares, itineraries RATP: 0 892 68 77 14 in French (0.34€/min) Info in English on www.ratp.fr Single metro tickets cost 1.40€, a “carnet” (10 tickets) costs 10.50€. Noctilien (Night buses) The new Noctilien network operates 35 bus routes 7 days a week, from 0.30am to 5.30am. Departures every 17 mins on weekdays and every 10 mins at weekends. It is also advisable to deposit bank card details. qIn the same way, be alert and careful in your exchanges with people unknown to you: unfortunately, tourists are prime targets for pickpockets (keep your bags closed and your pockets empty) and street hawkers (always go to an official sales point). qBe particularly vigilant at all times: • on public transport (especially in the metro, a favourite spot for pickpockets); • in tourist areas and crowded places (Eiffel tower, Champs-Élysées, Louvre...); • in some hostess bars and cabarets (notably in the Pigalle district), where tourists may be charged exorbitant prices for drinks. qFinally, if you are approached by someone who claims to be a police officer, do not hesitate to ask them to show their official badge. If they appear suspicious, seek assistance from a uniformed police officer. sexual tourism Consulates Italy Lost or stolen items Late-opening chemists Algeria Tel: 01 44 30 47 00 Official documents Tel: 01 53 72 07 07 Japan Argentina Tel: 01 48 88 62 00 Passports, driving licences etc. In all cases, go to the nearest police station to declare the loss or theft and keep your copy of the statement for future use. Anyone resorting to prostitution involving minors, whatever their age, will risk penalties up to 100,000 euros in fines and 7 years in prison. Both adults and minors can be charged with this offence. What prostitution really means above all is the existence of the traffic of human beings, organized by procurers for the purposes of sexual exploitation; international networks of organized crime that make victims of exploited men, women and children, whose everyday reality is alarming and appalling. As stipulated in the preamble of the UN convention of 2 December 1949 for “the suppression of the traffic in persons and of the exploitation of others for purposes of prostitution”, this traffic is “incompatible with the dignity and worth of the human person”. 137 USEFUL INFO PFY repères 2 2006 GB PFY repères 2 2006 GB 28/05/06 O 14:05 U R Page 138 C A Welcome to VINCI Park 1 2 3 4 5 A new parking concept: 6 7 8 9 10 ■ A bright and perfumed space. ■ A smile, a coffee and a warm welcome. ■ Staff commited to customers assistance.
