A Busy Start to 2016!
What a busy and productive first term it has been, as we now slow down for school holidays! Learning is the focus, improvement and
progress discussed and many future school events have been planned. Please spend some time during the holidays relaxing and enjoying
our wonderful Autumn weather! Minimise screen time, increase playtime and focus on how we use literacy and numeracy in the real
world- this might be cooking, having extended conversations, travelling distances, following maps, exploring Art Galleries and Museums
or staying in pyjamas and reading for pleasure! Keep it simple!
During the holidays our school has major work happening! On Friday afternoon the yards will be fenced off ready for the start of the
middle yard resurfacing. The car park on Stuart Street will be a workspace for workers and unavailable for OSHC parents and staff.
Please use High Street for access.
Trucks and graders will be digging up the yard ready for the new surfacing. This work will take about 4 weeks and our play space will be
impacted for the start of next term. If your children like watching this type of work you are welcome to bring them for a look but please
respect the fencing and worksite! I look forward to seeing a transformation when I return from Long Service Leave half way through the
term. During my absence Di Burrell will be principal with other school leaders providing support. Congratulations to Cindy Karlis for being the successful applicant for an acting Assistant Principal position during this time. Cindy will support teachers with IT learning strategies and still teach her class on Mondays.
Burnside Bogan Bingo tickets will go on sale in week 1 of next term. An online link will be provided then. Tickets to the 2015 Quiz Night
sold out in 4 days so please book tickets for this event promptly. It will be held on Saturday 4 th June from 7pm in our school gym. Tickets
are $25 each and the night promises to be awesome! See you there! More details next term.

Our 2016 Kids matter team is supporting children's social and emotional development
with a particular focus on developing resilience.
In Term 2 a 'Building Bounce' creative after-school program will be offered for children
in Years 2-5. This program is designed to help students build resilience through
creative and engaging ways of looking at life. By developing skills in selfunderstanding, creativity, gratitude and mindfulness, students will be able to develop
positive strategies for bouncing back when life gets tough. Through art, drumming,
yoga and mindfulness activities, students will be able to identify and defuse strong
emotions, and learn to incorporate gratitude and mindfulness in everyday life. Parents
with DCIS clearance are welcome to attend.

Following the success of our marathon running in 2015 that culminated in the Minister
Close presenting medals to my Year 1 children and students in our Year 3/ 4 buddy class, I would
like to encourage participation in 2016 for all students attending Burnside Primary School. This
does involve a huge commitment as students would need to attend 42 mornings and run 1km
each time. Sessions will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 8:00 am on the
top oval. Our first run will be Wednesday the 4th of May.
If your child would like to participate, please register their name and room number by Monday 2 nd May by either placing these details
in my pigeonhole or having them bring details to my classroom at 8:40am before school. There will be sign on sheet at each session
so children can record their name and see their progress. This year we will not time their running, rather there completion of the
distance. Older students may wish to record their own individual times and strive for personal best. There are a range of apps and
processes for doing this. Whilst we won’t have a sign in sheet for parents, any offers of help in the supervision or running with the

This term in Biological Science, all Year 1 classes have been working with the ACARA Curriculum outcome
for Science Understanding; Living things have a variety of external features and Living things live in different places
where their needs are met. Students took to Cleland to enhance their understanding and learning around identifying
the features of animals and plants. They have been questioning how these features are used to help meet the needs
of these living things in their environment and how changes to the environment affect plants and animals. Students,
teachers and parent volunteers had a great adventure we’d like to share with you…
I learnt that snakes
had legs a long time
ago. We patted

Tasmanian devils

We saw lots of interesting
animals. We fed and patted the
kangaroos and one kangaroo
had a joey in it’s pouch.

The echidnas were pretty amazing. The Bilby has a
backward pouch. We saw Sally
and we got to hold lots of

All reptiles have scales. We saw many reptiles snakes,
goanna, a blue tongue lizard and a bearded dragon. Snakes
shed their skin. We felt the snakes old skin and it felt
bumpy, slimy and scaly. Blue tongue lizards have thin heads
so they can dig down into the ground. Tasmanian Devils

On Monday all the year one children went to Cleland National Park. We went for a
long walk around the park looking at many animals. We even got to pat some of the
native animals. We wrote the names of some of the animals, their external features
and their habitats and then we drew pictures of them. We had a great time. We

Over the past term Bec Mumford has been visiting each class to introduce her new series of books and to support the students in their
learning within the biological science strand of the Australian curriculum. Bec will be joining us for our first assembly in week 1 where
she will introduce her books to our school community. The books will be available to purchase after the assembly and Bec will be
holding a book signing session for the students to have their books signed.
The year 7 students have been forming their own opinions about Organic and Inorganic farming methods with the support of Bec's
knowledge. Some the messages they have taken away from their experience with Bec are, "In my opinion inorganic fertilizers are
scientifically better as they have been researched more,' Finn
Jye argues that, 'Organic fertilizer is better for the environment.'
Oliver sits on the fence and offered 'Certain fertilizers do different things. Inorganic fertilizers make the plants grow quicker, however,
they may harm the soil.'

Talent Recruitment for children aged 7 to 10 years old – video clips
Feeney Marketing will be directing and producing two video clips to promote and encourage interest in the Science Alive
educational expo to be held later this year in August. The clip will be broadcast on social media channels including
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. Digital catch up TV channels may also be employed.
The expo is a family friendly event with over 26,000 people attending over the weekend August 5 -7th 2016.
They are recruiting children - between the ages of 7-10 to participate in the clips. The format will involve asking broad
questions to individual children who will speak to camera. We are seeking candid unsolicited responses so no
preparation is required. They are not seeking professional child actors. Please wear casual clothes; a bright coloured T Shirt
would be ideal.

We are estimating you will need to allocate 45 minutes for the filming (this includes wait time). No payment but 2 x

preferred session time. We only require 20 and 30 children so register your interest ASAP to avoid missing out. Please bring the signed

Author Jackie French is visiting the School on Wednesday 4th May at
2pm. She will appear in the Performing Arts Centre and will speak to
our JP and Primary students.
Jackie French was the Australian Children's Laureate during 2014-15. You can read about her latest awards in the following article:
French was presented with her Magpie Award, the symbol of the Laureate, at a ceremony at the National Library of Australia
in Canberra on 27 November 2014 by actor, director and former Play School presenter Rhys Muldoon.
She took over from the inaugural Laureate – a position shared between Alison Lester and Boori Monty Pryor – in January
2014.
The theme for French’s two-year term as Australian Children’s Laureate will be ‘Share a Story’.
Working extensively with the media throughout her Laureateship Jackie will advocate for:



the right for every child to be guided to the books they’ll love;
wider support, both in person and financially, of literacy and library projects for young people;
the children’s literature industry to be seen as a vital part of Australia’s economy.
In January 2015 Jackie was also awarded Senior Australian of the Year.
Jackie French has written over 170 fiction and non-fiction books. Her writing career spans 25 years and includes 248
wombats, 3,721 bush rats, 36 languages and over 60 awards in Australia and overseas.
Jackie has been a full time writer for over twenty years, and she is acclaimed in both literary and children’s choice awards. She
is passionate about history, the environment and the conservation of wildlife and our planet. Jackie is also dyslexic, and is a
strong advocate for the rights of children with learning difficulties.
Diary of a Wombat, created with Bruce Whatley, is one of Australia’s best-loved picture books. It has
been on bestseller lists across the world, with a still increasing number of awards and translations.
Jackie’s acclaimed novel Hitler's Daughter has spent a decade on most of Australia’s children’s choice
award shortlists, and has also won the 2000 CBC Book of the Year for Younger Readers, the UK Wow!
Award, a Semi Grand Prix Award in Japan and has been listed as a "blue ribbon' book in
the USA.
Monkey Baa’s production of Hitler’s Daughter: the play won both the
Helpmann and Drover’s Awards and toured the USA in 2013. Monkey Baa have
also adapted Jackie French and Bruce Whatley classic picture book, Pete the Sheep.

Athletic Champions
Jonte Dew (Year 5) and Zara Pelham
(Year 3) recently competed in the State
Individual Athletics Championships at
Mile End.
They both performed amazingly. Jonte
won bronze in the 800m boys under 10
and came 4th in the 400m final. Zara
won a gold in the 800m under 9 and
silver in 400 and made finals in 200m
and long jump.

SAPSASA
Congratulations to Mia Haynes and Ella
Tok who made our District SAPSASA
Softball Team. They had a very
successful week at the state Softball
carnival last week taking out first place
in Division 1. The girls should be
congratulated not only their
performance but also on the way they
behaved. They represented the
District, Burnside and themselves with
great pride and sportsmanship.

Well, we have come to the end of term 1,
phew! Term 2 starts with a bang, with our
annual Fun-Run-A-Thon on Wednesday of
Week 1. Please use some time in the holidays to help your children to source some
sponsorship from family and friends.
Volunteers are needed to help out with the
Fun Run, with setup starting from 8am on
Wednesday 4th February. Please get in touch
via the facebook page or via the P&F email
(pandfburnside@live.com) if you can help
out at any stage throughout the day. A class
schedule will be posted on the facebook
page and sent out via school stream closer
to the day.
The P&F Mother’s Day stall is also in Week 1,
on Thursday 5th May. Classes come down at
times scheduled throughout the morning
with Reception to Year 4 choosing from a
selection of gifts priced at $5 each. Years 5
to 7 have the option to choose from a pick
and mix section with prices for different
items ranging from $1 to $6. Students are
welcome to purchase multiple gifts for Mum,
Step-Mum or Grandma.
A huge thank you to the wonderful parents
that have helped out with the wrapping of
the Mother’s Day Stall gifts over the past
week!
