AV I AT O R S E R I E S Peter Lik’s iconic views of America’s varied landscapes are widely published and instantly recognizable. Always exploring new ways of depicting nature, Peter closely monitors the weather and tests new and sometimes unproven technology, all while producing landscape images that capture both pristine beaches and ragged river canyons with equal force and brilliance. The Arizona Aircraft Boneyard is another chapter in Peter’s relentless pursuit of original and often inaccessible subject matter to share with his legions of fans and collectors. AV I AT O R S E R I E S PETER LIK PREFACE It was such a privilege and an honor to actually shoot here — I was blown away! After I negotiated with the United States Air Force for over a year, Colonel Patrick T Kumashiro, Commander of the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, granted me access to their aircraft and missile storage and maintenance facility in Tucson, Arizona. It was a dream come true! AMARG is a controlled-access site, and is absolutely off-limits to anyone not employed there as well as anyone lacking proper clearance — it’s no joke! The legendary “Boneyard” takes care of well over 4,000 aircraft making it a landscape unlike any other place on earth! It was such a privilege and an honor to actually shoot here — I was blown away (nearly literally)! The scene is unreal! His pictures vividly honor the storied tradition of aviation history through his use of natural color, sense of magnitude and depiction of moody isolation. Peter combines his love of the environment with a dedicated desire to record what he sees for the pleasure of others. Commercial and military aircrafts, through his eyes, take us on a journey through history and a celebration of the art of photography. Peter’s spectacular personal style is both technically perfect and aesthetically striking in its portrayal of the Boneyard’s unique landscape, regarded by purists as the premiere treasure trove of aviation.
