THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS:
DEAR PARISHIONERS:
Welcome! As most of you know, our parish
motto is “All Are Welcome”. The following was
included in a church bulletin from St. Thomas More Catholic
Church in Sarasota, FL. I think it can be used profitably by
us as we grow in our understanding of what it truly means
to be welcoming.
“A special welcome to those who are single, married,
divorced, ‘It’s complicated’, gay, filthy rich, dirt poor or no
hablo Inglés. There is a place here for you, if you are over
60 but not yet grown up or a teenager growing up too
fast. We welcome soccer moms, Nascar dads, Redskins
fans and Eagles fans, starving artists, tree-huggers, those
in recovery and those who are still addicted. We welcome
you whether you sing like Pavarotti or can’t carry a note in a
bucket. You are welcome here if you’re just browsing, just
got bored, just woke up or just got out of jail.
We don’t care if it is your first Sunday at church or whether
you’ve been to church more times than the Pope. We
welcome you if you are having problems or are feeling
overwhelmed or if you don’t like “organized religion”. If you
are looking for a fresh start, a fresh cup of coffee or a hug
from a new friend, there is a place for you here. We
welcome those who are wearing their “Church clothes” and
those who are wearing their only clothes.
We are glad to see those who are inked, pierced or both,
those who could use a prayer right now, those who haven’t
been to church since Aunt Carol’s funeral, and those who
got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We
welcome seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts and jaded
cynics, the lost, the found….And You!”
Perhaps we can all reflect upon these words and see them
as a call to action for us to be a welcoming parish in word
and in deed.

Today’s Gospel tells us that in the midst of busyness, even
Jesus saw a need to find a quiet place to pray. St. Francis
de Sales also stresses the importance of practicing mental
prayer in the midst of our worldly activities, and gives us a
short simple method:
I especially counsel you to practice the prayer of the heart.
Set aside some time each day, if possible early in the
morning, when your mind is less distracted and fresher after
the night’s rest. Place yourself in God’s presence.
Remember that God is present in a most particular way in
your heart and in the very center of your spirit. Do not hurry
along and say many things but try to speak from your heart.
A single “Our Father” said with feeling has greater value
than many said quickly and hurriedly. Don’t be concerned
about finishing the vocal prayer you intended to say. By
often turning your eyes on Jesus in meditation, your whole
being will be filled with Him. You will learn His ways and
form your actions after the pattern of His.
From your meditation gather a few thoughts that you liked
best and are most adapted for your improvement. During
the day frequently think of them. Make particular resolutions
for your own correction. On that same day, we must try to
carefully practice them and to seek occasions, small or
great, to do so. Since prayer places our mind in the
brilliance of God’s light and exposes our ability to make
choices to the warmth of God’s heavenly love, nothing else
so effectively purifies our mind of ignorance and our will of
disordered affections. Meditation makes the plants of our
good desires grow green and flourish, and quenches the
disordered passions in our hearts. Keeping close to our
Savior in meditation and observing His words, actions and
affections, we learn by His grace to speak, act, and love like
Him.

Ash Wednesday is almost upon us. If you
would bring back to church the palms you
received on Palm Sunday last year, we will
add them to those being burned and used to
make the Sign of the Cross on your
forehead on Ash Wednesday. We have two large baskets in
the Narthex in which you can deposit your old palms
through the weekend of February 14th - 15th. This way you
have plenty of opportunity to bring them to church when you
come to Mass, to Religious Education class, or to any event
at the parish.

Next weekend
we celebrate Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time. Please
prepare for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these
texts from God’s Word:
Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46 Leprosy frightened people. For a
long time, societies could find no cure other than to forbid
lepers the company of the living. This social expulsion was
reinforced by a religious judgement. Leprosy was
considered the supreme punishment for sin.
Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 11 I Turn to You, Lord, in Time of
Trouble, and You Fill Me With The Joy of Salvation
This Psalm praises the Lord whose forgiving grace is allpowerful.
1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1 In 1st century Corinth, meat
offered to the idols often made its way into the market.
Scrupulous Christians feared contamination. They were
scandalized by the freedom with which other believers
enjoyed this food. Today’s passage deals with the difficult
balance between liberty and charity, with the attitude of the
strong toward the weak.
Mark 1:40-45 Jesus touches the leper. His charity makes
Him violate the most elementary interdicts of His society.
THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
INTRODUCTION TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES
On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma
of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution
“Ineffabilis Deus”. A little more than three years later, on
February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette
Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the
apparition on March 25th, the lady identified herself with the
words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their practice
of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm.
Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and
the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous
Medal: “O Mary conceived without sin.”
During interrogations Bernadette gave an account of what
she saw. It was “something white in the shape of a girl.”
She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning “this
thing.” It was “a pretty young girl with a rosary over her
arm.” Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She
wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A
rosary was in her hand. Bernadette was also impressed by
the fact that the lady did not use the informal form of
address (tu), but the polite form (vous). The humble virgin
appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity.
Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to
revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to
flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all
over the world. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the
authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our
Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of
Lourdes, on February 11th, became worldwide in 1907.
Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage and healing, but
even more of faith. Church authorities have recognized over
60 miraculous cures. To people of faith this is not
surprising. It is a continuation of Jesus’ healing miracles—
now performed at the intercession of His mother. Some
would say that the greater miracles are hidden. Many who
visit Lourdes return home with renewed faith and a
readiness to serve God in their needy brothers and sisters.

LENTEN
TAIZÉ Our very popular
meditative Taizé services will be held on
three consecutive Wednesday evenings in
the de Sales Chapel during Lent, and once
offsite at the Northern Virginia Mental Health
Institute (NVHMI). The Taizé Community
was founded in Taizé, France in 1940, and
has now spread to 30 countries, Catholics and Protestants
alike, with over 100 brothers in the community. To learn
more about the service, its beginnings, and what it is that
draws some 5,000 young adults and teens to Taizé every

seen it advertised and you’ve been curious – now’s the time
to give it a try.
While Taizé services will be included in the complete
schedule of Lenten Liturgies and Services published in the
bulletin next weekend, you might want to note our special
Taizé service at NVMHI will take place on Sunday February
22nd at 3:30pm. NVMHI is located within the Fairfax
Hospital Complex – 3302 Gallows Road, Falls Church.

Each year we
continue to offer this weekly
opportunity to pray as a community on
Friday evenings during Lent. Stations
of the Cross will begin in the church at
6:30pm and will be followed
im m ediately b y s oup s upper.
Representatives of various ministries
will take turns hosting these events, and will discuss their
ministries during supper. There will be three exceptions to
this schedule, as noted below.
The schedule for our hosts is:
 February 20th: Pro Life Ministry, 50+ Club and Cursillo
 February 27th: Mothers’ Group, Boy Scout Troop 124;
This will be our family evening and we will use “The
Way of the Cross for Children” to guide us in prayer.
 March 6th: GIFT, Pastoral Council, Pax Christi
 March 13th: Knights of Columbus, Young Adults. We
will enjoy a Fish Fry at 5:00pm; Stations of the
Cross will follow at 7:00pm.
 March 20th: Social Justice and JustFaith; no supper.
 March 27th: Health Ministry, Spanish Ministry; Stations
of the Cross will be bilingual.
 April 3rd: Because this is Good Friday, we will have
Living Stations of the Cross at 3:00pm, led by our
High School Teens (Agape).
HEALTH MINISTRY CORNER:
Don’t forget that
the Blood Pressure Screening takes place this Sunday,
February 8th, in the Auditorium from 2:30 - 3:30pm. High
Blood Pressure is a silent killer, and you may save your
own life by having this short, painless test. Our
professionals will be there to administer the test and to
provide counsel to those whose pressure needs attention.
Also, when you are walking down the hall on your way to
the screening, be sure to check out the recently updated
Health Ministry Bulletin Board, located next to the entrance
to the Ladies Room. The current theme is very appropriate
for the beginning of the new year, as it focuses on how to
improve your health by simply paying more attention to
what goes into your body! There are two wonderful
publications available in the pamphlet rack, printed in both
English and Spanish. “Let’s Eat For The Health Of It”
offers easy to implement guidance on improving the quality
of our health by suggesting healthy foods that we should
include generously in our diets and identifying items we
should eat less frequently. To help us be sure that our diets
are well-balanced, the “Nutrition Facts Label” offering will
help to demystify those product labels that can sometimes
be confusing, and assist us in making healthy food
selections based on our own medical situations. Our health
care professionals at the screening can answer questions

Wednesday, February 25th: Join us for a what
promises to be a wonderful experience when we visit
the National Museum of the Marine Corps, in Triangle,
VA, just across from United States Marine Corps
Quantico. We will view the many exhibits, and will
have lunch at the Devil Dog Diner or the Tun Tavern.
We plan to leave our parking lot at 9:30am.

Tuesday, March 10th: We will take a very short trip
west to Leesburg for shopping, and will have lunch at
the Lightfoot Restaurant. Watch for more information.

Thursday, March 26th: Off we will go to Sharpsburg,
MD to visit the Antietam Battlefield. Then we will have
lunch at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, WV.
SJN YOUNG ADULTS ARE WAITING FOR
YOU! You’ve heard or read about them and probably
have even seen them at work, but who are they and what
do they do? Our parish Young Adult Ministry is a dynamic
group of individuals (both singles and couples) in their 20s
and 30s who are building fellowship, growing in faith, and
making a difference in our community. Young Adult Ministry
representatives are available in the Narthex this weekend,
February 7th- 8th. We are always looking to welcome new
members! Stop by to chat in the Narthex to ask any
questions you may have and sign up for our emails.

BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL COMMITMENT
WEEKEND As Father Tom pointed out last weekend,
the funds contributed for this annual appeal enable many
good works to take place that are impossible without the
resources the diocese has, and that single parishes, like
ours, are unable to do on their own. He asked us to
carefully consider to what degree we are able to participate
in this worthy cause.

upcoming activities for singles and couples in their 20s and 30s.

 Saturday, February 7 th - Sunday, February 8th - Young
Adult Outreach: Narthex. Young Adults will be available after
each Mass throughout the weekend to answer any questions
and spread the word about our group.
 Today through Thursday, February 12th - Register for
Lenten Faith Sharing Small Groups - Grow in faith and
community with other young adults this Lent. The small
groups will consist of watching a DVD series, "Walking
Toward Eternity: Daring to Walk the Walk," focusing on living
out the virtues in our everyday lives; small group discussions;
reflection; and of course, prayer! Groups will meet weekly for
eight two-hour gatherings beginning the week of February
15th. Free will donations are accepted for materials which are
$16 per person. Email Marie (mariekruff@gmail.com) today to
sign up. Please provide your first and second choice for
meeting dates/times from the following options: Sundays at
2:00pm, Mondays at 7:00pm, Tuesdays at 6:30pm, or
Wednesdays at 7:00pm so we can organize the small groups.
Please also prayerfully consider leading or co-leading a small
group. No experience is necessary. If you are considering the
opportunity to lead, please let Marie know!
 Saturday, February 14th - Childcare Volunteers - 10:00am12:30pm in the Nursery. We will support members of the
Mothers’ Group by providing childcare while they spend some
much deserved time enjoying Saint Valentine's Day. Email

 Saturday, February 21 st - Attend the 5:00pm
Mass together. Gather at 4:30pm; we will sit in the section

Homeless: 6:00 - 7:30pm in the parish kitchen. We will
prepare 90 bagged lunches which will be provided to those in

 Friday, March 13th - Stations of the Cross. We will gather in
the church by 6:45pm. We are looking for volunteers to help.

Fr. Bob Mancini, OSFS, will explore this papal
document using a “study group” method. We will
read “Joy of the Gospel” and use the Study Guide
to reflect on Pope Francis’ important themes. This
is the same series he led in fall 2014. The book is
available for purchase ($10) in the Faith Formation Office.
Sessions will take place on Wednesdays at 7:00pm on February
11th, 18th, and 25th.

Confirmation, to be celebrated at St. Thomas More Cathedral on

HIGH SCHOOL TEEN NIGHT
Join us this
Sunday, February 8th, in the Youth Room for food,
fellowship, faith sharing, meeting new friends and having
lots of fun! !! At tonight’s session, the topic is “I Believe ….in
God.” We regularly profess our belief in God through the
Creed. But what does it mean to believe in God? We
cannot scientifically prove God exists, but somehow, we
can come to know there is a God. At tonight’s session we
seek to develop an understanding of some of (continued)

High School Teen Night continued
the stories and images of things we can see, hear, and
touch that will lead us to more confidently proclaim: “ I
believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven
and earth, of all things visible and invisible.” This will be a
great opportunity to learn more about our Catholic faith and
values, share snacks, enjoy fellowship and make new
friends! All high school teens and their parents are welcome
to join us to continue our faith journey together. Bring a
friend; friends do not have to be members of our parish or
Catholic.
If you have not yet registered for the Saint John Neumann
High School Teens Ministry Program (AGAPE), a
registration form is available on our website at

need to be registered to attend our fun and informative
events but we would like you to register soon!
AGAPE OVERNIGHT LOCK-IN Next Saturday night,
February 14th at 7:00pm to Sunday Morning, February 15th,
all High School Teens are invited to our Overnight Lock-In
next in the Auditorium. This fabulous gathering will feature
movies, snacks, games (including the incomparable shoe
box hockey), late night pizza and a chance to hang out with
old friends and make new friends. You have Monday off
from school so why not party with us? Friends are welcome
– they don’t need to be Catholic or members of Saint John
Neumann Parish. Adults and teens are needed to help plan,
coordinate and assist at the Lock-In. Cost: $5. Doors will be
locked at 8:00pm. You must contact Doug Johnson for
special permission to arrive late or leave early – otherwise
you are sentenced to a night of frivolity and faith for the
duration. Sleeping bags are required as you will be staying

Special Collections
Next week, on Ash Wednesday, we will have a basket in
the back of the church for donations supporting the
Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.
This collection supports Catholic organizations that provide
affordable shelter and train seminarians and lay leaders in a
region still struggling from the effects of Soviet rule. By
providing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building
renovations, your donations help to restore the Church and
build the future in the region.

THE CONTINUING CHRISTIAN
DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE OF NORTHERN
VIRGINIA (CCDI) invites you to a 6-week Tuesday
morning course on “The Sacraments of Christ” from 9:30 to
11:30am (with break and questions) starting February 24th
and ending April 14th. It will be taught by Fr. Michael
Witczak, SLD, of the School of Theology at the Catholic
University of America. The course will take place in the
Religious Education wing of the parish.
Among the anticipated topics are: Jesus the Primordial
Sacrament; Origin and Theology of the Sacraments-Continuing Jesus; Prophetic Mission-Did Jesus Originate
Them All?; The Sacraments of Initiation and the Baptismal
Priesthood; The Eucharist; The Sacraments of Forgiveness/
Healing; and The Sacraments of Christian Calling and

THE ARLINGTON PEACE AND JUSTICE
COMMISSION is holding the 9th Annual Peace
Symposium entitled ”Care for Creation, care for peace: the
link between Climate Change and Security” on February 21
at St Charles Borromeo parish in Arlington beginning after
the 9Am Mass. It will address the challenges that climate
change is posing and will pose for international peace,
stability and development. The keynote speaker is Daniel
J. Misleh, the Executive Director for Catholic Climate
Covenant.
