◗ HEAR THIS
◗ MIX THIS
MARIAH MACCARTHY’S MOST PERFECT
CD MIX WOULD HAVE:
1. “Us and Them,” Pink Floyd
2. “The Day the World Went Away,”
Nine Inch Nails
3. “High and Dry,” Radiohead
4. “Love Ridden,” Fiona Apple
5. “One More Night,” Stars
The Strokes,
6. “Missed Me,” the Dresden Dolls
“First Impressions of Earth” (RCA)
Anytime The Strokes release
a new album, it’s cause for
celebration (at least it is
around here). And while the
New York band’s third CD
isn’t as brilliant as its 2001 debut, there are
still moments of greatness in the group’s
chunkier, heavier sound. Some songs in
the middle, like “Vision of Division,” are
duds. Others are rock gems.
This probably won’t be your favorite
album, but it’s good enough to make
frequent iPod rotations. And a special
bonus: We finally get to hear Julian
Casablanca’s surprisingly good voice
without all the fuzz around it.
7. “What Do I Have to Do,” Stabbing Westward
8. “Bells for Her,” Tori Amos
GRADE

— NINA GARIN
9. “The Blower’s Daughter,” Damien Rice
10. “Into the Void,” the String Quartet
Tribute to Nine Inch Nails
RCA
Ludacris and DTP, “Ludacris Presents... Disturbing Tha Peace”
GRADE
Island Def Jam
“Jesus was a carpenter so we proud about cocking them hammers.” Best line on here,
guess who spits it? This is not a crew album. It’s a label album. The only way to
get the thing to sell is to call it “Luda Presents” and make sure his name’s on six
tracks. There’s some R&B stuff, sex rap, gun rap, even a bonus rock song. No
surprises, no hidden gems, and even the main event mails in all his verses.
