COMMITTED Pan-Massachusetts ChallEnge 2012 31607.indd 1 12/6/12 7:21 PM Mission Statement The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge raises money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through an annual bike-a-thon that crosses the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Since its founding in 1980, the PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, corporate sponsors and individual contributors. All are essential to the PMC’s goal and model: to attain maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift. Our hope and aspiration is to provide Dana-Farber’s doctors and researchers the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers. We have seen plenty of 90 degree days but the record 90 percent humidity made for arduous conditions and bad air. Did it matter? Not to this remarkable group. Performance and attitude went hand-inhand as cyclists made their way across the state. Among this constituency were, once again, both Senators Kerry & Brown and the 36th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army (retired), General George Casey. They joined an army of 5,234 cyclists in our on-going battle against cancer. As anyone who participates in the PMC knows, there is a sea of volunteers and professional staff to acknowledge. Nothing of this nature happens on its own, but a year’s worth of planning is rewarded by producing an environment that demonstrates that mountains can be moved when people work together. The PMC has been embraced by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and applauded as we pass through 46 towns on 11 different routes. People line up to root for the riders, but really they are cheering for the eradication of cancer. That day will come. Until then, our PMC family will be riding, volunteering and raising money for research and treatment that improves the quality of life for cancer patients and their families world-wide. above Billy Starr at the PMC’s opening ceremonies 1 See you on the Road, Billy Starr Founder & Executive Director 31607.indd 1 12/6/12 7:21 PM A Message from President Benz: above Dr. Benz at the PMC’s opening ceremonies 2 The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge has been instrumental in advancing DanaFarber’s lifesaving mission. Raising $375 million in 33 years is an achievement that speaks loudly to the PMC’s passion for the work being done at Dana-Farber. The unrestricted funds raised are critical to our goal of eradicating cancer, enabling new treatment and research initiatives, as well as support services for patients and their families. Exciting progress has been made in shaping the cancer therapies of tomorrow. Since the opening of the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care, research that bridges laboratory experiments and clinical applications is gathering momentum. One example is Dr. Jean Zhao’s explorations into an isoform known for its role in cancer cell growth. Her investigations prompted Dr. Eric Winer and his colleagues to organize a clinical trial of compounds that specifically target that isoform. Their collaborations are helping find new approaches to treat resistant HER2-positive breast cancers. Also of note, Dr. Stephen Hodi has helped usher in a new class of melanoma treatments known as immunotherapies, thanks to the April 2011 FDA approval of Ipilimumab. Unlike traditional therapies that attack a cancer directly, immunotherapies use the body’s internal defenses to fight the disease. Recently, he launched our Center for Immuno-Oncology to develop additional immunotherapies, including vaccine-based treatments, to treat melanoma and other cancers. The PMC community of riders, volunteers, and sponsors are inspiring, and our faculty and staff echo my thanks for your investment in our work, which in turn is an investment in the future for cancer patients and their families. Thank you for your partnership, which is truly turning the tide in the fight against cancer. Sincerely, Edward J. Benz, Jr., M.D. President, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute 31607.indd 2 12/6/12 7:21 PM Pan-Massachusetts Challenge Contributes a Record $37 million to the Jimmy Fund The 2012 Pan-Massachusetts Challenge raised $37 million for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The 2012 fundraising total is $2 million more than the PMC gave in 2011 and brings its 33-year Jimmy Fund contribution to $375 million. The PMC is the most successful single athletic fundraising event in the United States; it raises and contributes more money to charity than any other such event. PMC Founder and Executive Director Billy Starr presented a ceremonial check to Dana-Farber President Edward J. Benz, Jr., MD at a brunch celebration held at Legal Harborside in South Boston, which was attended by more than 500 PMC cyclists, volunteers and family members. PMC 2012 exceeded its 2011 gift by $2 million, a 5.7 % increase. “PMCers are committed to our event and to raising money for cancer research,” said Starr. “Their efforts fund Dana-Farber research and treatment that help millions around the globe.” The contribution represents 100 percent of every riderraised dollar, a charity pass-through rate that is nearly unparalleled within the athletic fundraising event industry. Approximately 3,300 volunteers and 200 companies supplied almost $5 million in products and services to provide riders with food, mechanical and medical assistance, luggage transport and support of all kinds. Last August, 5,234 cyclists from nine countries and 36 US states rode one of 11 routes that ranged from 25 to 190 miles. Riders included Massachusetts Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown, 300 cancer survivors, current cancer patients and avid cyclists and weekend warriors alike. Many rode in support of loved ones being treated for cancer or in memory of those who have been lost to the disease. “PMC money is seed money that enables our scientists to conduct the earliest forms of research, often before it is eligible for government funds,” Benz said. “The money they raise is critical to our work.” Founded in 1980 when 36 cyclists rode across Massachusetts and raised $10,200 for the Jimmy Fund, the PMC is known today as the gold standard of athletic fundraising events due to the unprecedented sums it raises and its consistently efficient charity pass-through rate. One of the very first athletic fundraising events for charity in the nation, the PMC was a pioneer in its focus on fundraising and efficiency. 3 left (L to R) Rob DeMartini, CEO of New Balance; Stacey Lucchino, captain of Team Nine; Larry Lucchino, president and CEO of Boston Red Sox; Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC; Edward J. On Saturday, June 9, PMC cyclists, volunteers and supporters came together to celebrate PMC Day at Fenway Park. As trails of baseball fans took to their seats, a short video highlighting the PMC played on the centerfield video board. Prior to the game, 33 cancer survivors who are PMC cyclists rode their bicycles around the warning track as part of a pre-game ceremony during which PMC volunteers stood in front of the Green Monster to catch an American flag that unveiled the PMC logo. Thousands of Red Sox fans took to their feet as the passion and determination of the PMC radiated through the stadium. Following the survivor parade, Krystn Cinelli, 27, a professional singer and dancer from Haverhill who won a radio contest presented by PMC sponsor, Entercom, sang a classic rendition of the national anthem, and PMC Team 9 Pedal Partner and cancer patient, Tim Burke, 12, of South Boston, eagerly shouted, “Play ball!” to commence the game. Diane Legg, a PMC cyclist and cancer patient, threw the ceremonial first pitch. With the help of Wally the Green Monster, Joey Bianco and Samantha Burns, who were both undergoing treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund Clinic, served as honorary bat kids. At the start of the fourth inning, Emma Zeiger, 14, a PMC Needham Kids Ride veteran, was honored by the Red Sox as a Child-Hood Hero for her outstanding contribution to her community as a member of the PMC family. Although the Red Sox lost to the Nationals 4-2, PMC Day at Fenway Park was an all-around win. On PMC weekend, Stacey Lucchino, Team 9 captain and wife of Red Sox President and CEO, Larry Lucchino, along with Red Sox wives Tiffany Ortiz, Holly Beckett, and Kathryn Nixon, who returned from North Carolina to rejoin her former Team 9 pals, rode alongside then Manager Bobby Valentine. On Saturday, Aug. 4, Team 9 stopped in at the Pedal Partner tent at the Lakeville water stop to visit Tim Burke. “Our relationship with the Pan-Mass Challenge is one of the charitable activities we’re most proud of over the course of our decade of ownership of the Boston Red Sox,” says Larry Lucchino. “Everyone who plays a role with the PMC—the evergrowing number of riders, volunteers, supporters and numerous others who participate in their own way—can’t help but be immensely inspired by the cause. The decision to get involved is an easy one; who wouldn’t want to support the incredibly innovative and effective Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund? The Red Sox do with great pride and enthusiasm, and we will continue to do so in future years. Go Team 9!” below (L to R) Cyclists ride along the warning track; Krystn Cinelli sings the national anthem; Emma Zeiger; Red Sox Wives Holly Beckett and Kathryn Nixon with Tim Burke, Team 9 Pedal Partner; Diane Legg throwing the ceremonial first pitch; Samantha Burns and Joey Bianco with Wally the Green Monster. 12/6/12 7:22 PM Presenting Sponsor Striking a New Balance for Pedal Power As co-presenting sponsor of the 2012 Pan-Mass Challenge, New Balance was proud to “ride” alongside the 5,234 participants in support of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. New Balance works to support the PMC through a multipronged initiative that includes producing vibrant performance rider jerseys, thousands of volunteer t-shirts, impactful rider gifts and special recognition for the Heavy Hitter fundraisers. Boston-based New Balance has a long-standing commitment to promoting health and fitness and giving back to its local community so the PMC bike-a-thon is a natural fit for the company. New Balance President/CEO Rob DeMartini is a six-year PMC cyclist who credits the PMC’s unique combination of dedicated riders, committed volunteers, and a bike weekend full of adventurous and inspirational moments as the reason behind its tremendous fundraising accomplishments. 5 From the Lab to the Road: Eisai Takes a Hands on Approach to Treating Cancer “What a special gift for Eisai to partner with the PMC, Dana-Farber and more than 5,000 cyclists! Their drive and determination will serve as a strong inspirational tailwind for Team Eisai. As a two-time past participant, I know that the PMC delivers a world-class event that changes lives. Eisai employees are committed to changing lives with drugs that will make a meaningful difference in cancers that mainly affect women. To be side-by-side with cyclists and volunteers who have faced cancer, or are currently fighting the disease, proved to be even more valuable than we imagined. Eisai is committed to PMC 2013 and will bring a full team of cyclists to join the cause.” Michael O’Brien Vice President of Sales right Eisai team members 31607.indd 5 12/6/12 7:22 PM A New Spin on the PMC Brand and Website 6 The 34th annual PMC will launch with the unveiling of a new website that sports sleek and user-friendly architecture, easy to navigate for donors, alumni, and first-time riders and volunteers. The new pmc.org is designed for greater user engagement, integrating the social media features of the PMC blog and Twitter feed, and will provide new ways for PMC members to share their photos and videos. The community section will encourage conversation between riders, volunteers, and PMC staff, extending the familiar feel of PMC weekend throughout the year. The new media galleries will let PMC members tag photos to identify them-selves and others, as well as highlight places and activities, making it easier than ever for PMCers to find themselves throughout the site. The new pmc.org highlights the PMC identity with branding that flows through all aspects of the PMC. The main PMC logo along with its sub-brands—Heavy Hitters, Top 10 percent Heavy Hitters, and Living Proof—will uniformly communicate the PMC message. Through the use of color and typography, the PMC brand will be easily recognized and distinguished on all marketing materials. right A preview of the new PMC website below The PMC color story 31607.indd 6 tradition heavy hitters heavy hitters top 10% living proof Celebrates the hue and heritage of the original ride Recognizes the contributions of PMC goal-getters Honors the gold standard of PMC fundraising Salutes the tenacity of our cancer survivors 12/6/12 7:22 PM A Toast to PMC Survivors The Living Proof photo, taken each year at the end of day one of PMC weekend, may be one of the most moving moments the entire event. Overlooking the bay and the Sagamore Bridge, more than 300 cancer survivors gather to put on their matching “Living Proof” t-shirts and pose for what has become a very large family photo. The New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NECCS) and Freixient USA (PMC wine sponsor) celebrated the growing number of cancer survivors who ride and volunteer by organizing a the second annual cham- pagne toast to the PMC’s Living Proof riders. Led by Angus McQuilken, a fourthyear, Living Proof PMC rider and member of the board of directors of the NECCS; and Billy Starr, PMCers raised their glasses in the largest PMC toast to date. 7 Tom Callahan: Living Proof That We Can Make a Difference Among the Living Proof riders this year was two-time cancer survivor and second-year PMC cyclist, Tom Callahan, 40, of Hamilton, Mass. Callahan was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2009, had surgery to remove the tumor, and by 2010 was in remission. The following year, feeling rejuvenated and thankful for his recovery, Callahan rode his first PMC and was in his first Living Proof photo. “Being a part of that photo was one of many emotional moments of the weekend,” recalls Callahan. “Unfortunately, just a few weeks later, doctors confirmed that my cancer had returned.” After four rounds of chemotherapy, Callahan is once again cancer-free. With the support of his family and friends, in 2012, he rode in his second PMC and posed in the Living Proof portrait as a two-time cancer survivor. above Tom Callahan 31607.indd 7 12/6/12 7:22 PM The General’s New Mission The following are excerpts from the key note address given by General George Casey, US ARMY (retired) at the 2012 PMC Opening Ceremonies 8 “What I saw in the PMC was a group of active, committed people who used cycling as a way to make a difference in our world by eliminating cancer. That spirit reminded me of the spirit that I saw over the last decade in the men and women of our armed forces, as they fight to protect this country from the scourge of violent extremism. There is a connection between cycling, commitment and courage. Not long after I started cycling, one of my college roommates, who had been cycling for some time, told me about the PMC and reminded by that one of our other roommates’ brother had been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. He suggested that we ride the PMC for him. I immediately said, ‘Yes’ and began a training program for the 80-mile jaunt from Wellesley to Bourne. Around the same time, the Ride2Recovery folks asked me to participate in a commemorative ride on the 10th anniversary of September 11th with 250 recovering wounded from Liberty Park, NJ, just across the river from Ground Zero to Shanksville, PA, where Flight 93 crashed, to the Pentagon—about 570 miles. I couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate the events of that day and the sacrifices that the men and women of our Armed Forces and their families had made since that day, so I signed up. Both events caused me to move my cycling to the next level—clips, road bike, longer training rides—and I survived them both—and along the way I met some remarkable people who were committed to something larger than themselves, who were committed to making a difference in their worlds, and who went out of their way to help others. Frankly, those are the kinds of people I like being around and PMCers are those types of people. Courage comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s there in the men and women of our Armed Forces who live by the creed: I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. And it’s there in the victims and families stricken by the cancer that we all hope to stamp out. And it’s there in every one of you, who have the courage to commit to something larger than yourselves and make a difference in our world. You epitomize what is best about America, and it is precisely that spirit that makes America what it is today—the greatest nation on earth.” “” Great to be a part of your Army. —General George Casey, 2-year rider, 36th Chief of Staff of the United States Army 31607.indd 8 12/6/12 7:22 PM Heavy Hitter Teams Listed below are the Heavy Hitter Teams, made up of five or more members, who together have raised an average of at least $6,500 per rider. It was to be his last training ride before the PMC. As he was lying on the ground in intense pain waiting for the rescue squad, a rider in a PMC jersey just like the one he was wearing rode by. He recognized that Fraley was likely too injured to ride 190 miles the following weekend. He leaned over and said, “I'll ride for you.” Fraley often wondered who it was but didn’t remember his face. The phrase became Fraley’s mantra, and symbolic of what the PMC is all about. Everyone is riding for someone. Fast forward to Aug. 1, 2012. It was Fraley’s last training ride on the Blackstone Valley Bikeway. Wearing a Miles For Mary PMC jersey, Fraley was stretching when he was approached by 14-time PMCer, Leo Trottier. They struck up a conversation about routes, fundraising, and engaged in other typical PMC banter. Fraley shared that 2012 would be his fourth PMC, but only his second ride, and shared the tale of his accident. Trottier said he recalled a similar accident, but said that cyclist wasn't riding a recumbent. Fraley told Trottier his recumbent 10 above left Dave Fraley above right Leo Trottier was only a year old and he had been riding a regular Raleigh at the time of the accident. Trottier asked with a huge smile, “Do you remember what I said to you?” In unison, they both said, “I’ll ride for you.” PMC Message Sticks to the Bumpers More than 1,000 bumper stickers with the PMC logo and safety message were seen on police vehicles in the 47 towns that make up the PMC route. The effort was headed by Police Chief Richard Koch, of Brewster, who was so proud that the PMC travels through his coverage area, that he wanted to do something that would unify police crews along the PMC route while also reminding both motorists and cyclists to watch out for each other. The PMC Rides on Dunkin’ Dunkin’ Donuts has fueled thousands of participants who come together to raise money for cancer research and treatment in the PMC. The caffeine kings of New England have served more than 13,000 cups of coffee and tea and 4,075 bagels, muffins and munchkins to cyclists, volunteers and spectators throughout the weekend. Leading up to the event, PMCers could lift a cup of Joe with the PMC logo prominently featured on the side. More than 11 million hot coffee cups were printed and served at local franchises. For the third year, 13 cyclists rode in the PMC as the “Dunkin Dozen.” Since 2006, Dunkin’ Donuts has contributed $140,000 to the PMC. 31607.indd 10 12/13/12 3:26 PM Sisters Team Up to Cure Cancer Laura Brande, a healthy, athletic wife and mother of two young children, never imagined she’d be diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34. Six years later and cancer-free, Brande and her sister, Deborah Yolin Raley, were by each other’s side when they cycled from Wellesley to Provincetown as part of Team WOW (Women’s Oncology on Wheels), which is headed by Dr. Eric Winer who treated Brande at DanaFarber Cancer Institute. In 2006, Brande found a lump in her right breast and immediately scheduled a doctor’s appointment. A biopsy revealed she had invasive breast cancer. Brande’s sister, Deborah Yolin Raley, of Wellesley, Mass., a physician assistant at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, knew that in order for Brande to have the best care possible, she needed to be treated at Dana-Farber. There, Brande had a bilateral mastectomy. Brande’s overriding concern was caring for their young children while she traveled back and forth from her South Kent, Conn. home to Dana-Farber for treatment. She drove to Massachusetts on Wednesdays, obtained chemotherapy on Thursdays and rested at her mother’s nearby home Fridays through Mondays. On Mondays, she traveled back to Connecticut where she remained home with her family through the following Wednesday until she returned to Boston for her next cycle of chemotherapy. The routine repeated for four months. Following chemotherapy treatments, she had to move away from her family and into her mother’s house for six weeks in order to receive daily radiation treatment at Dana-Farber. She then had three-week cycles of a specific infusion for a year to finish. Through it all, Brande set her sights on getting healthy and one day riding in the PMC. “The PMC is an amazing event and I am so proud to ride,” says Brande. “I ride in honor, in memory and because I am living proof and so others can be too. This year was extra special because I got to ride with my sister. Two days on a bike through the heat, humidity, rain, hills in Truro and dunes in P’town was exhausting, but being part of raising $36 million for Dana-Farber and the fight against cancer with my sister is priceless!” Just when the family was celebrating Brande’s first year anniversary of being cancer-free, their mother Lee-Ann Yolin was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. She had surgery to remove the tumor, followed by radiation treatments for six weeks, which was also overseen by Dr. Winer. Yolin Raley helped care for Brande when she stayed at their mother’s home. “Laura and I were always close, but cancer connected us in a deeper way and it helped me relate better to the patients with whom I came in contact,” above Deborah Yolin Raley and Laura Brande in their Team WOW jerseys says Yolin Raley. “I’m more empathetic and comforting because I know what a toll cancer can take on all aspects of people’s lives.” Three weeks before the PMC, Yolin Raley was in a bike accident during which she fractured her clavicle. Despite doctor’s orders, she rode in the PMC because she was determined to be by her sister’s side in the PMC just as she had been during her cancer treatments. “Given all that Laura went through, and so many others have been and will go through, canceling our ride was not an option,” says Yolin Raley. “I did not want to let Laura, or so many of our awesome supporters, down. This was a small issue compared to what the ride represents.” 11 “Enterprise has proudly chosen to unconditionally sponsor the PMC to further promote cancer research at Dana-Farber. We believe that dollars donated unconditionally work double overtime to provide the most 'bang for the buck' in the urgent race against time in the fight against cancer.” —Warren Mosler, director, Enterprise Bank 31607.indd 11 12/6/12 7:22 PM 12 Meet the Maynards: A PMC Family PMC Kids Rides Raise $829,021 Ben Maynard, 12, and Sophia Maynard, 9, of Wilmington, Mass., are PMC Kids Rides veterans who are on a mission to help people affected by cancer. Over the past five years, the brother-and-sister duo has worked with family and local businesses to raise more than $24,000 for cancer research through their participation in the PMC Wilmington Kids Ride. Ben and Sophia ride in honor of their great aunt, Ann Maynard, of Springfield, Mass., who was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and is now in remission. Ann is a six-time PMC cyclist. The children’s grandfather, Le Maynard, of Springfield, Mass., and aunt, Kelly Maynard, of St. Paul, Minn., have also participated in the PMC. In an effort to continue supporting the PMC Wilmington Kids Ride as a family, the children turn to their father and mother, Greg and Maria Maynard, for motivation and support. Greg, a leadership gifts officer at Bentley University in Waltham, shows them how to annually set higher fundraising goals and Maria, a senior vice president at a major corporation, works to get individual donations made by friends and family matched by their employers in the Boston area. “The PMC and PMC Kids Ride mean a lot to me because I know a bunch of great bikers who raise money to find a cure for people with cancer including members of my family and friends,” says Ben. The PMC Wilmington Kids Ride is one of 33 rides that took place throughout New England and beyond this spring, summer and fall. Since 1998, the PMC Kids Rides program has raised more than $829,000 for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. This year, 5,234 cyclists between the ages of two and 15 rode between one and 15 miles in mini bike-a-thons that helped to support the PMC mission. These fundraisers allow children to honor loved ones who have battled cancer by making a difference in their communities while promoting physical fitness. Many of the people on Team PwC have personal connections to cancer and the company is among the PMC’s most committed sponsors. The company’s PMC support is part of its overall commitment to corporate philanthropy. “PwC is a place where hard work, dedication and passion all come together to create relationships and work that we are all proud of. The PMC event has the same philosophy,” says John Farina, partner. PwC empowers its employees to volunteer for charities of their choice during company time. Employees help with everything from painting schools and cleaning playgrounds to mentoring high school students. PwC Boston supports countless charities in the area, contributing more than 10,000 employee hours dedicated volunteerism in fiscal year 2012. Team PwC dedicated its 2012 ride to pedal partner Nicholas Mack, 6, of Newton, who is being treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “It is a privilege to be a corporate sponsor so that 100 percent of rider revenue can go where it belongs: directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund,” says J.C. Lapierre, Northeast Marketing and Sales Leader and first year PMC rider. “Our people are also committed to the PMC and we’re tremendously proud of the 80 riders we had on Team PwC! Congratulations to everyone involved in this remarkable event.” 13 below (L to R) Casey Mosca, Mary Alexandre, J.C. Lapierre, Meghan Boudreau, Hillary Smith Babson Marks 13 Years On Saturday, Aug. 4, Tom Mercurio, a six-year, Living Proof rider, arrived early and jockeyed for a prime spot at the starting line at Babson College. He quickly snapped pictures of friends, teammates, and the college around him. With strains of U2’s “It’s a Beautiful Day” in the background, 2,100 PMCers were soon on their way to Bourne. Many would be back the following day to finish their two-day ride, or as a part of the one-day Sunday routes. Sixty Sunday cyclists concluded their 25-mile ride at the new Gillette Stadium finish, while 400 more continued their journey back to Babson to complete 50 miles. The Wellesley Hub Site at Babson College has generously supported riders throughout PMC weekend since 2000, and also serves as the location for the PMC Wellesley Kids Ride. 31607.indd 13 12/6/12 7:22 PM PMC Staff Profile: Erica Kaitz Twenty Years of PMC Service above Erica Kaitz and husband Rick 14 If you have been to a Heavy Hitter event at one of Boston’s posh hotels or celebrated at a check presentation party, you have experienced the fine work of Erica Kaitz, a 20-year PMCer and 12-year member of the PMC’s head staff. For the past eight years, Erica has been the PMC’s special events coordinator, orchestrating 500-person dinners and parties that enable PMCers celebrate their good work. Since 2000, she has served as the PMC’s Volunteer Coordinator, Provincetown Coordinator, Kids Rides Coordinator, and now Special Events Coordinator. Before becoming a member of the head staff, Erica was a rider and then a volunteer. All the while, her husband Rick has continued to ride; 2012 was his 20th consecutive PMC. “Each position had its unique qualities and I love what I am doing now,” Erica says. “Being the Provincetown coordinator may have been the most challenging. At first I was amazed that we could turn a postage stamp of a parking lot into the final welcoming site for thousands of cyclists.” She worked closely with Dana-Farber for more than a year to orchestrate the May 2012 Heavy Hitter event at the Yawkey Center. “It was incredibly rewarding to help create a night where the PMC community could see the world-class institution we all support,” she said. Hardly just a job, the PMC is woven into the fabric of her life, Erica says. “My children were raised with the PMC as a family affair. The PMC is a part of my being and fiber, every day.” Erica says she has millions of stories to share. From the time her bike was stolen just days before she was to ride in the PMC, to the best friends she’s made along the PMC route, to helping develop the PMC Kids Rides into the nearly $1 million, 33-ride strong program it is today, her work with the PMC has been rewarding, emotional, enjoyable and inspiring. “Erica’s portfolio of leadership and experience is matched by only a halfdozen people in the PMC’s 33 years,” says Billy Starr. “That is rarified air.” In addition to all of her roles, Erica has photographed riders as they finished their 190-mile journey at the Provincetown Inn. But this year, as Erica and daughter Nichole waited in Provincetown for Rick and daughter Alyssa to finish their ride, she was filled with more emotion than ever before. It was Alyssa’s first year riding. She rode in honor of Erica, who in June was diagnosed leiomyosarcoma, a rare cancer. “I wear a new PMC hat, as a cancer patient,” says Erica. She is being treated at Dana-Farber, the organization she’s spent nearly two decades serving through the PMC. Leading Erica’s medical team is Dr. George Demetri, a six-year PMC rider, senior vice president for Experimental Therapeutics at Dana-Farber, and Director, and Dr. Suzanne George, clinical director, both at the Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology at DanaFarber. A firm believer in the power of integrative medicine, Erica is also under treatment at Dana-Farber’s Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies. “I am an incredibly fortunate woman to have access to one of the finest cancer institutes in the country,” Erica says. PMCers will enjoy the next Erica Kaitz production, a the Heavy Hitter Celebration, set for April 12, 2013 at the Intercontinental Hotel, where she will wear yet another hat: keynote speaker. Car Talk The spirit of the PMC rides year-round on four wheels as the latest auto accessory 31607.indd 14 12/13/12 3:26 PM Pedal Partners Provide Inspiration On May 19, 9-year-old Kayleigh McCabe and her mother, Corinne, addressed a crowd of riders, families, and Pedal Partners at the Pedal Partner party, an annual event that offers a chance for PMC cyclists and pedal partners to meet, often for the first time. She told them of her battle with cancer and how a group of PMC riders, all members of Team LEGS (Legs Ending Great Suffering), have become a part of her extended family. In January 2008, Kayleigh, then 5, was diagnosed with stage three hepatoblastoma, a form of pediatric liver cancer. After seven months of chemotherapy and a liver transplant, Kayleigh was pronounced cancer free. One year later, Corinne rode in her first PMC. Now a four-time PMC cyclist and member of Team Legs, Corinne has raised more than $18,000. “I began participating in the PMC as a way to fight back for Kayleigh,” says McCabe. The McCabes also coordinate the PMC Westborough Kids Ride—in which Kayleigh participates— and since 2009 has raised more than $69,000. On Aug. 4, nearly 70 Pedal Partners cheered on their cyclists from the Pedal Partner picnic at the Lakeville water stop. The day was filled with fun activities and refreshments sponsored by John Hancock. John Hancock employees volunteered to play games and create art projects with the Pedal Partners at the picnic, serve food and cheer on riders. Twenty John Hancock employees rode in the event in honor of Pedal Partner Elias Norton, 6, of Nantucket, who is being treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the Jimmy Fund Clinic. In its 12th year, the Pedal Partner program continues to inspire riders to train, ride and fundraise for the PMC. Seventy Pedal Partners, pediatric oncology patients at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund Clinic, were matched with PMC teams who rode in their honor. A group of 60 MFS Investment Management employees dedicated their 2012 ride to Pedal Partner Samantha Burns of Weston. Over the summer, MFS riders honored her during a company luncheon where her parents described the young girl’s battle with cancer. Samantha was admitted to Boston Children’s Hospital in Aug. 2011 where she began chemotherapy treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Four months later, she battled flesh-eating bacteria, a rare and extremely aggres sive infection. Even as she undergoes treat ments, Samantha does her best to help other children in similar situations. In 2011, she helped organize toy drives at Children’s Hospital during the holi day season. In 2012, she designed a reusable butterfly bag that was sold at HomeGoods, with proceeds benefiting The Jimmy Fund. “Samantha has amazing strength, incredible endurance, and a remarkable will to live,” says her mother, Catherine Burns. “If anyone can inspire riders to pedal faster, it's her.” Samantha’s emotional story moti vated MFS riders to keep up the pace during the ride. She served as a source of encouragement when they met up with her at the Pedal Partner tent. “The PMC is embraced by so many at MFS, from the hundreds of employees who have ridden or volunteered over the past 14 years, to the literally thousands who have donated to their co-workers’ fundraising campaigns,” John Reilly, MFS public relations director, PMC rider and captain of the company’s PMC team. “We look forward to continuing to sponsor and ride for years to come.” In addition to the MFS employees who rode in the event, nine volunteered, and many more participated through the company’s matching gift program. In its 14th year as a PMC sponsor, MFS has raised more than $7 million for cancer research. above top Samantha Burns takes a break at the Pedal Partner picnic above bottom Team MFS at Mass Maritime Academy The Bicycle: A DuVine Vehicle for Change Over the past 33 years, the PMC has made cycling a vehicle for change in the fight against cancer. Combining a sense of adventure with true passion, it is no wonder people from across the globe have been inspired to ride and raise money for the annual athletic fun drais ing event. For this reason, DuVine Adventures, one of the leading bike tour operators in the industry, has joined the PMC family as a corporate sponsor and the official bike tour supplier for the PMC. “Participating in the 2012 PMC as both a corporate sponsor and as a rider was overwhelmingly rewarding,” says Andy Levine, president and founder of DuVine Adventures. “I witnessed not 31607.indd 18 only the incredible camaraderie among riders, but the infectious spirit of hope and joy that permeates PMC weekend.” Since 1996, DuVine Adventures has delivered award-winning cycling vacations through a network of proven leaders spread throughout Europe. 12/6/12 7:22 PM Volunteers Turn the PMC Crank On July 19, the PMC warehouse was abuzz as nearly eighty volunteers packaged the 5,234 rider and 3,300 volunteer registration packets that would be handed out on PMC weekend. While many riders thank the volunteers that hand them water, carry their luggage and generally care for them on PMC weekend, few are aware that a small army works behind the scenes a couple weeks before the event to make sure that every rider has the correct jersey size, pre-assembled luggage tags, and everything else to identify them on the weekend. Among these volunteers were 23 employees and family members of the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS), the group responsible for publishing the New England Journal of Medicine. The MMS selected the PMC as an organization they would like to support with group volunteer events as a part program stated in 2012 in honor of the Journal’s 200th anniversary. Anne Coughlin, manager of employee communications and HR projects stated “ that the PMC was a natural choice: “In addition to the fact that many of our employees and their family members have been touched by cancer, it’s fitting that we support the PMC because the mission of the MMS involves health care advocacy and the advancement of medical knowledge.” With support from volunteers like the MMS, credential packing finished earlier than ever, and a day ahead of schedule. With space in high demand, turning the warehouse over so quickly was invaluable to staff responsible for packing the trucks that supply all sites over the weekend. As riders returned to their daily lives, and PMC staff took a collective deep breath in mid August, a letter arrived at the PMC office from the MMS. It thanked the PMC for allowing them to volunteer and was accompanied by check in support of fundraising from their Employee Giving Committee. Needless to say, PMC staff was touched by the group’s generosity and commitment, and look forward to having them return year after year. ” 19 At each of the rest stops the volunteer were more creative and more service oriented than ever. America’s best corporations could learn about how to drive exceptional customer service from the PMC. —Stewart Kohl, 15-year rider 31607.indd 19 12/6/12 7:22 PM Four Goodness Sake As advocates for healthy living for those who have been affected by cancer, there was no question in the minds of four best-friends that they would join forces to form team “Four Goodness Sake” and participate in their first PMC. Cancer survivor and team captain, Jan Thoen, 51, a nurse practitioner, lead team members Maura Mastrogiovanni, 51, a yoga instructor, Susan Scheuer, 50, a Pilates, TRX spinning instructor, and Mary Ann Gillen, 55, an interior designer, in the ride to support an organization that has helped to save the lives of friends, family members and one of their own. The women live on Boston’s North Shore. In 2009, Thoen was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumor of smooth muscle cells commonly found in the uterus or pelvic area. She has since had surgery and continues her follow up care at Dana-Farber’s Sarcoma Clinic. Gillen lost her father to lung cancer in 1978 and has since watched a handful of friends and family members succumb to cancer. Mastrogiovanni lost her mother to pancreatic cancer in 2004, but remains optimistic about the progress of cancer research and treatments. All four women took on the PMC as a challenge physically, mentally and emotionally. “It was such a rewarding experience and we look forward to riding past all of those amazing and inspirational supporters again next year,” says Thoen. below (L to R) Janice Thoen, Maura Mastrogiovanni, Susan Scheuer, and Maryann Gillen I know how much this event means to my colleagues at the Farber and, as the spouse of an ovarian cancer survivor (treated at DFCI). WCVB broadcasts the PMC message far and wide both on-air and online at WCVB.com. The station produced and aired public service announcements, promos, and rider profiles, which helped boost rider participation and volunteerism. Throughout PMC weekend, the station brought ‘live’ news coverage of the PMC event to its viewers. As part of PMC opening ceremonies, “Chronicle” produced a live, 30-minute special ‘PMC on CVB’ hosted by Anthony Everett, which emanated from various locations at the Sturbridge Host Hotel. WCVB Anchor, Ed Harding, who also rode in the PMC with his daughter, conducted live cut-ins from Wellesley during WCVB’s afternoon news and “Chronicle” special. Harding’s Co-anchor, Heather Unruh, rode with Team LungStrong after being inspired by Diane Legg, a PMC cyclist who is being treated for lung cancer, and for whom Unruh produced a news story. The WCVB team rode from Wellesley to Bourne in honor of Jared Mitchell, 8, of Milton, who is being treated at the Jimmy Fund Clinic for a Wilms tumor. “Once again, it was a privilege to partner with the PMC and provide increased visibility to this important event,” says WCVB’s President and General Manager Bill Fine. “We were proud to profile the patients who benefit from research funded by the Jimmy Fund as well as highlight stories of road warriors who not only raise money for cancer research, but also call attention to one the most important athletic fundraising events in the nation.” top right Pedal Partner Jared Mitchell meets with his WCVB teammates right WCVB’s Anchor Ed Harding interviews Lucy Duffy live from Wellesley 21 “It’s always an honor for Landry’s to support the PMC, to join in the cause to beat cancer, and to serve the many committed riders in the event,” says Landry’s CEO Tom Henry. “We really enjoy seeing so many of our customers out there riding the PMC each year, and it’s a great way for us to give back to the cycling community.
