DOCUMENTARIES
2012/2013
Polish documentary filmmakers have proven
to be very curious about the world we live in,
making films not only in distant and remote
places in all corners of the Earth, but also at
home, in their hometown, or in the nearby
school. The sensitivity of Polish filmmakers
towards the plight of the simple people, as
well as issues concerning the spiritual state
of contemporary man and social processes
of 21st century civilization, deserves
recognition and respect. In making their
films, these filmmakers often address
subjects that are controversial, surprising,
or even forgotten. They show images
of the world and people's emotions, about
which we, the audience, sometimes may not
have the slightest idea, not realizing that
they exist and occur, often right next to us.
Polish documentary films are certainly
worth the wait.
This latest publication on Polish
documentary films features our selection
of film projects produced in recent months.
Many of these have already been successful
in the festival circuit, often winning
prestigious awards. In 2012, documentaries
by Polish filmmakers screened at almost
250 film festivals, including such renowned
events as IDFA in the Netherlands, DOK
Leipzig in Germany, Visions du Réel
in Switzerland, and Hot Docs in Canada.
Over 50 awards and special mentions
in 2012 alone serve as proof of worldwide
appreciation for Polish documentary
filmmakers. The ‘Polish Documentaries’
catalogue also features a number of fresh
projects that have yet to be released. I am
confident that several of these titles will
gain international acclaim.

Abu Haraz is a village
in the desert of North
Sudan. For centuries, its
inhabitants followed
the rhythm of nature
determined by the flooding
of the Nile. Their stern,
albeit joyful, world is now
in danger.
The plan to build a gigantic
dam means that their
village is to be flooded
and their existence as they
know it will end.
The protests of Abu Haraz
residents have no effect
and they are soon
displaced. Once again,
tradition clashing with
socio-economic progress
produces human dramas.

A story about a world that
no longer exists. Acclaimed
Polish film and stage
actress Danuta Szaflarska
guides the audience on
a journey across the historic
and cultural events that
made her who she is.
Cinematography by Arthur
Reinhart is intertwined with
footage from Szaflarska’s
personal archives and clips
from her films, creating
a framework for her
touching and humorous
stories. The film’s running
time of 97 minutes is
a reflection of Danuta
Szaflarska’s age. Audiences

Archimandrite Gabriel is
a Christian Orthodox monk
from the Podlaskie region
of Poland, and the sole
inhabitant of the Kudak
hermitage on the Narew
river. With help from
the local Christian
Orthodox community,
a wooden Orthodox church
and a monk residence were
built. The place is visited by
crowds of pilgrims,
attracted by
the extraordinary
personality
of the archimandrite. But
will it always remain so?
Will he find his successor?
The life of a hermit isn’t for
everyone; candidates seem
to drop out one after
another.

In 1980, Haitian voodoo
priest Amon Frémon visited
Poland, invited by Jerzy
Grotowski. He found Poland
to be a strange place,
where people queued for
hours as if wanting to
spend time together, yet
not talking to each other.
They performed strange
rituals at large stadiums.
The rain was louder here, as
if it was a country of deaf
people, and in wintertime,
evil ‘white water’ fell from
the sky; water that did not
relieve thirst.
Amon decides to perform
a voodoo ceremony, calling
on the spirits
of the ancestors to free
Poles from the evil powers.
A battle ensues, in which
the dead and the living
unite in a joint war effort.
A metaphysical look at
Poland under Communism
through the eyes of a visitor
from a different culture.

The local penitentiary
in Tarnów. 28-year-old
Damian is serving time
in the N-ward, reserved for
prisoners deemed as
dangerous by the prison
authorities. This ‘bad boy’ is
serving his sentence
in solitary confinement.
The film follows his story
across two weeks out of his
ten-year sentence. Damian
talks about his former life
of robbing banks, and his
life now, sitting alone
in the prison cell. Having
nobody to talk to is
maddening.

In the late 1970s and early
1980s, Wrocław became
one of the key centres for
the independent music
scene in Poland. This was
part of a wider trend:
the booming development
of Polish rock music. It was
in this setting that
the rebellious punk rock
was born and continued to
grow, influencing the social

of the city.

– revealing the gradually
increasing terror
of the occupation.
Unique footage of Warsaw

Berlin, only to come to
a standstill on a sidetrack
in Koluszki near Łódź.
Baumgart invited art
historian Andrzej Turowski
to take part in the project.
This encounter resulted in
an unusual work, provoking
reflection on the genealogy
of modernist avante-garde.
The book poses numerous
questions about the truth
of history and the point
of using sources in art
history; it is full of humour
and fluently combines
different literary
conventions.

In April 2010, she learned

She then promised her

how to appreciate it. For

The painting also visits

We observe their everyday

Not for Everyone is
an inside look into one
of the top international
music festivals in Poland –
the Warsaw Autumn,
a world-renowned
contemporary music
festival, organized annually
since 1956. The film is
composed of long takes
from rehearsals; we merely
get to hear random remarks
from musicians
and technical staff every
once in a while. We do not,
however, hear any
commentary from
the filmmakers. Images
change as the camera
travels as if unnoticed by
everyone around.
Each concert or
performance is preceded by
months of seemingly
irrelevant activities. Not for
Everyone puts these
activities in the spotlight.
The film was produced by
the Polish Television for
the National Audiovisual
Institute.

a former Soviet marine who
lost his fingers and toes to
frostbite while on duty.
They became infected
and had to be amputated.
Over 10 years, Sergei

as a result of a spiritual
transformation, Sergei’s
outlook changes
dramatically. Now he
dreams of building a home
for those who met a similar
fate. The world as seen

The story of the Furmańczyk
family, representatives
of the working class.
The protagonists have lived
in Łódź for generations,
working at the factory that
had made this city
the promised land. After
the fall of Communism,
they lost their jobs; all they
could do was watch from
the sidelines as a French
investor built Central

The Palace of Culture
and Science in Warsaw was
once a despised gift from
Stalin. After the political
transformation in Poland,
there were some who
suggested it should be torn
down. But the Palace is still
standing and doing fine,
teeming with the life
of hundreds of offices,
housing a theatre, a concert
hall, a cinema, even
a swimming pool
and the City Council. It is
an unusual organism,
where recent history
intertwines with
the contemporary world.
The nooks and crannies
of the Palace serve as
a backdrop for a number
of apt and humourous

Their grandson, who lives in

A film inspired by Stanley
Milgram’s theory of six
degrees of personal
connections, which states
that every person
in the world can be reached
by a maximum of six
interpersonal relations.
The three crew members
set off on a journey
in search of the connection
between two randomly
selected protagonists:
Martyna, a young
punk-rock musician from
Warsaw, and Marco
Antonio, a farmer from
a small mountain village

We accompany
the protagonists in their

states that the world is
getting smaller. But are
we really becoming closer
together?

The documentary Solidarity
According to Women is
a story about the forgotten
heroines of the Solidarity

and a contemporary
portrait of their lives.
Although the political
system has transformed,
the women of Solidarity

a better reality.
The element that unites
the film’s historic

director/narrator Marta

a symbolic daughter
of Solidarity who benefited
most from
the transformation for
which Solidarity fought

A film about Katowice from
60 years ago, when it was
renamed Stalinogród
(Stalin City) overnight.
The name ‘Katowice’ was
annulled by a decree
of the Council of State
dated March 7, 1953. Was
the idea to commemorate
the Soviet leader
an initiative of the local
residents? Why exactly was
Katowice chosen for this
honour?
The director shows

Majewski and Michał

historians, art critics,

Rolleczek, but also her
ideological opponents.
The film also covers
the story of Natalia
Rolleczek’s acquaintance
with Karol Wojtyła (Pope
John Paul II), their
encounters during
the underground
movement and when he
was already Pope, as well
as issues with censorship,
family dramas,
and spiritual struggles.

Krzysztof M. Bednarski –
sculptor, action artist,
creator of installations
and video art, poster
designer. Born in Krakow,
lives in Rome.
His works have been
exhibited in the world’s top
galleries and art centres.
In 2010, Bednarski’s
monument of Frederic
Chopin entitled ‘La note
bleue’ was opened for
public access in Vienna’s
Schweizergarten. Bednarski
also designed monuments
for his deceased friends,
including Jerzy Grotowski,
Mario Schifano,
and Krzysztof Kieślowski.
He designed
the monuments
commemorating Czesław
Miłosz in Krasnogruda
and Bolesław Leśmian
in Zamość. He was also
known for his unorthodox
approach at the ‘shadow
monument’ of Federico
Fellini in Rimini.
Bednarski’s film portrait
has the potential to be as
much a total work as one
of his early works entitled
‘A Total Portrait of Karl
Marx’. An extraordinary tale
about a truly exceptional
contemporary Polish artist,
placed in context of the key
cultural and social events
in late 20th century Poland.

Honoratka, the legendary
Łódź-based cafe, operated
from the end of the 1940s
until the mid-1970s. This
was the place to be for
filmmakers and film school
students. It was frequented
by almost all key figures
of Polish cinema, including
Roman Polański, Zbigniew
Rybczyński, Barbara
Kwiatkowska, Jerzy
Kosiński, Adam Holender,
Jerzy Skolimowski, Janusz
Majewski, Daniel Olbrychski,
Jerzy Hoffman, Kurt Weber,
and Ewa Wiśniewska.
Honoratka was often
the space where film
concepts, production
designs and casting ideas
sprung to life.
According to Jerzy Hoffman,
there were only two places
in post-WWII Poland where
one could talk about
important issues without
alcohol: the Legia pool
in Warsaw in the summer,
and Cafe Honoratka in Łódź
year-round.

One of the tombs to be

a long-forgotten Tzadik.
But devout Meir
Moszkowicz from Bnei Brak

climbing the cemetery hill

years. Gorlice is the place
where Meir realized
the meaning of life. So he
cares for the tomb of his
beloved master, he cares
for the cemetery, he
befriends the locals,
and when he returns to
Israel, he wakes up each

holy place.

The Polish Film Institute (PFI) carries
out the statutory tasks of state policy
in the field of cinematography.
Among its other duties, it is
responsible for creating conditions for
the development of Polish film
production and international
co-productions. PFI provides subsidies
and loans (in the case of films with
significant attendance potential),
acting within the framework of its
Operational Programme priorities.
INDExOFDIRECTORS
In 2013, there are four Programmes:
In 2013, PFI will spend over 32 million
EUR to carry out its tasks.
1. Film Production
PFI subsidizes both film production
and project development.
The participation of PFI in a film
production underwritten by foreign
funds is possible if Poland
co-produces said film in accordance
with the European Convention on
Co-production, and artistic
contribution of Polish artists is
commensurate with the assumed
co-production participation on
the Polish side. The minimum
co-production, contribution is at least
10% of the financial or
financial-and-material input
in the case of a multilateral
co-production and at least 20%
of a bilateral co-production. Subsidy
of such a project by PFI carries with it
an absolute necessity of spending at
least 80% of the subsidy within
Polish territory. In the case
of a minority co-production,
the minimum contribution of Polish
artists is also specified:
(22.28 million EUR):
Objectives: screenwriting
schoparships (250000 EUR), project
development (1.37 million EUR),
production of feature films (15 million
EUR), documentaries (2.37 million
EUR) and animations (3.3 million
EUR).
2. Education and
Dissemination of Film Culture
(4.25 million EUR):
Objectives: film education
WWW.PISF.PL/EN
and professional training, film events,
local film initiatives, digital
reconstruction and preservation
of film archives, as well as research
and development.
3. Development of Cinema
Infrastructure
(2.82 million EUR):
Objectives: modernization of cinema
houses and co-financing of digital
projection equipment.
4. Promotion of Polish Films
Abroad

material from Polish film archives;
introduce a Polish character; employ
a Polish cinematographer, composer

PFI provides grants of up to 50%
of the estimated project costs,
subject to quota limits set for film
types and topics (see table below).
A ‘difficult’ movie project (film
trudny), including a directorial debut
or a director’s second outing, may
receive a grant of no more than 70%
of production costs, but not
in the case of a minority
co-production. For international
co-productions, including minority
productions, percentage limits
of the subsidy are calculated on
the basis of the total funding from
the Polish side. However, for
international co-productions,
including minority productions, with
a Polish director, percentage limits
of the subsidy are calculated on
the basis of the total budget.
Applications to PFI must be
submitted via the Internet at
https://wnioski.pisf.pl, with
subsequent submission of the actual
documents to the Institute.
Applications are accepted three times
a year:
session I/2013
15 Nov 2012–15 Dec 2012
session II/2013
minority co-productions
500000 (European film**)
375000 (non-European)
for mass audiences
The lead producer of a minority
co-production with Polish
participation must demonstrate
recognized and significant
achievements as a producer.
INDExOFPOLISHTITLES

250000
During one session, a producer may
apply for funding for up to four
projects, including up to three film
production projects. Projects are
evaluated by experts appointed from
among representatives of the Polish
film industry, but the final decision
belongs to the General Director
of the Polish Film Institute.
Evaluation results and funding
decisions are announced after 90
days. The decision is valid for six
months and its validity may be
extended for up to six consecutive
months. Return of the donation is
required if a film has generated profit
within the first six years after its
première.

session III/2013
15 Jul 2013–15 Aug 2013
* A film with artistically ambitious content and form, of limited commercial value, also a director’s debut and second film
