The narrow cornice road, from Porto to Piana, twists and turns through extraordinary, sheer, red granite cliffs that plunge dizzily into the sea below. These are the Calanche or rocky inlets - that Piana is so famous for. Jagged rock outcrops, hewn by the elements, conjure up the impression of a weird and wonderful rock sculpture. Towering dramatically above the deep blue expanse of the Gulf, massive chunks of rock, riddled with gaping hollows carved by natural erosion (or tafoni as they are called in Corsican), harbour an astonishing collection of imaginary characters. The Gulf of Girolata. The hamlet of Girolata lies at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, a little way beyond Osani village. Accessible only on foot or by boat, it’s an absolute “must” for all visitors to the Porto Gulf. Girolata is famous for its superb castle fort which was the scene of a well known historical drama. It was here in 1540 that legendary Turkish lieutenant, Dragut, was finally imprisoned, hunted down by the nephew of the great Genoese admiral Andre Doria, after the destruction of neighbouring Sia. The Scandola Nature Reserve. Scandola’s wild and virgin territory encompasses great swathes of land and sea, and is a symbol of the islander’s determination to protect their rich natural heritage for the benefit of future generations. The Scandola Reserve was created on the 9th CALANCHE December, 1975, and was France’s first DE PIANA nature reserve with a twofold vocation: next page: osprey and its nest in the gulf, granite cliff to protect both marine and land zones. It in the calanche, Scandola. covers some 900 hectares on land and 1000 at sea. The Scandola peninsular, volcanic in origin, lies at the northern tip of the Porto-Girolata Gulf, and was the first natural site in France to be listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Since 1982, it has been part of the Mediterranean network of specially protected sea and coastal zones. 6 OUEST CORSICA MAGAZINE TRAVEL IDEAS 2014 TRAVEL IDEAS Suggestions for an amazing experience GO TO WALK OR RELAX OUEST CORSICA MAGAZINE 7 TRAVEL IDEAS 2014 1 >Scrubland green, Navy Blue “Verde machja, Turchinu mare ” 5 days/ 4 nights Recommended dates: before and after season Type of stay: sports, hiking Target audience: groups From € 235/ person* (based on 18 people) *Excluding costs of transport rates (plane / boat) and guide Day 1 : Warm up. Brocciu cheese is the only dairy product on the island that has been granted AOC status. It is produced from fresh whey that is heated before adding 10 to 20% whole milk. This milk comes from Brebis sheep or from the native goats. The mixture is heated once again over a wood or gas fire and is salted as it is stirred. The product that makes the Brocciu then rises to the surface, is collected using sieves and poured into woven wicker baskets (today they use plastic moulds) that are then stacked. It is made from December to June, and after that it can be enjoyed in its semi-soft form or as a hard cheese known as “brocciu passu”. Brocciu is used in a wide range of traditional local dishes, such as fiadone, migliacci, beignets, omelettes, storzapreti… » Corsican honey. « The first honey to obtain the AOC label and the AOP classification in 1998, Corsican honey offers a great variety of tastes and flavours. The rich wild natural vegetation and the ancestral knowledge of our beekeepers combine to create honey that is very particular. This product is made up of six seasonal varieties: - Spring honey has a floral taste and lacks acidity. It is collected from March to May and has floral notes thanks to the asphodel and the clementine trees… - The « Maquis de printemps » honey is essentially made from white heather, collected throughout the springtime across the vast expanses of the maquis scrubland that stretches from the sea to the mountains. It is golden, with a delicate caramel or cocoa flavour, with an aroma of liquorice or coconut. - Maquis honeydew (cistus, oak, mastic), > MEAT collected from May to September on the coastal zones and wooded areas close to the maquis, has a malty taste that lingers on the tongue, scented with liquorice, caramel and forest fruits. - The « Maquis d’été » is gathered from the month of August and provides a fruity and aromatic honey, mixing helicrysum, anthyllis, Corsican thyme (erba barona), broom, marine germander and the aromatic plants of the mountains. - Honey from the chestnut groves is collected from July onwards and is strong and tannic, with a slight bitterness. Its chestnut flavour has hints of bramble, anthyllis, clematis, broom and marjoram. - The « Maquis d’automne » is bitter and strong in the mouth, collected from October to February and composed primarily of arbutus. » And meet our honey producers every year in September at the “Mele in Festa” in Murzo. The olives are collected only when they have reached full maturity so that they can become infused with all the aromas of the maquis and they fall into the nets below all by themselves between November and March. The olive trees can adapt perfectly to rocky ground and have no trouble on Corsica’s drier slopes. In the past, each village had its own water mill, “u fragnu”, to process the oil. The Genoese encouraged this olive growing culture on the island and by the XIXth century olive oil was used in cooking, pharmaceuticals, treatments for the body as well as having magical and religious properties attributed to it. Olive oil production represents 2000 hectares of cultivated land in Corsica and this is carried out by 300 producers. The island has about 20 mills, including 7 state of the art facilities that are responsible for 80% of the total production. The Appellation d’Origine Protégée is the only mark that guarantees the origin of the olives and where they were processed. An olive oil that bears the AOP Oliu di Corsica label is therefore sure to be made using only Corsican olives. » 14 OUEST CORSICA MAGAZINE MONUMENT SAINT-FRANÇOIS CONVENT OF VICO Time to serenity Saint-François convent of Vico. The first beggar Brothers of the Order of Saint François came to this place to build a convent in 1481. With the help of the inhabitants, they constructed a little Oratory to pray and some huts to sleep. It was built in its current form in the 17th Century according to Italian Franciscan architecture. The history of the convent was marked by the Venerable CharlesDominique Albini who, in 1836, occupied the place with the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate upon request of Ajaccio Bishop Casanelli d’Istria. The Oblates must act as missionaries and Father Albini worked hard towards this goal: preaching, catechism, confessions; he is even said to have performed miracles. In 1839, he passed away in his room, which was turned into a chapel by the community. Officially declared “Venerable” in 1968 by the Church, Charles Dominique Albini is solemnly celebrated in the convent on May 20th, anniversary of his death. Sine then, the Convent has become the spiritual relay of the micro region and perpetuates this fullness with reading and reflexion meetings, conferences, biblical seminars, spiritual retreats as well as cultural and friendly activities (Summer Debates in August). The Convent votive festivals (Pilgrimage to the tomb of Father Albini on May 20th - A Priziuncula August 2nd - Immaculate Conception December 8th - Saint Lucie December 13th) are celebrated each year under the watchful eye of the Padre Albini Brotherhood. The Convent also hosts the Sorru in Musica classical music Academy, attended by numerous students to develop their art. OUEST CORSICA MAGAZINE 15 MONUMENT Crena’s Lake Liamone Beach Located in the Monte Rotondo massif, Crena Lake lies at an altitude of 1310 metres and is not on any walking routes. Would-be visitors must follow the path that runs above the village of Soccia until they reach a large car park. The trail sets off from the riverside along the northerly slope of Mont Saint Elysée. The only lake in Corsica surrounded by woodland, Crena is covered with pink and white water lilies that are sure to leave an impression. Visitors will love the beauty and tranquillity of this magical spot where the laricio pines are reflected on the green waters. It takes around 1h to reach Crena and, should you wish to escape the heat of high summer, it is possible to take a refreshing dip in the waters of the river just beyond the lake. This peaceful walk can be enjoyed by the whole family and it is a good idea to take a picnic in order to really get the most out of this enchanting place. Just remember to keep an eye out for the wild pigs that are famous for their gluttony. The Plus: It is possible to hire donkeys or horses in Soccia in order to turn your visit into a truly unique walking experience, and don’t forget your camera so that you can really remember this magical place! The 4-km long beach at Liamone, situated at the mouth of the river of the same name, offers the dual advantages of the beach and the river. The beach is still relatively unspoilt.
