Williams Joe Zakowski Dear Friends, This past year has been an important period of accomplishment for FCA, and this is reflected in this year’s annual report. It has also been a time to plan for our future. Beginning in February, we started an ambitious strategic planning process to set a framework for agency programming and operations over the next three years. It was our intention to make this planning as inclusive as possible with the participation of all of FCA’s stakeholders including staff, Board, funders, service partners and clients. Thirteen focus groups and almost one hundred and fifty client surveys were utilized to gather feedback regarding what key areas the agency needed to focus on in the next three years. The areas that were identified were: increasing Agency visibility in the community, increasing funding for programs; increasing opportunities for volunteer involvement, clarifying our direction regarding future programs and services, increasing resources directed toward staff recruitment, retention and training; and improving our infrastructure and clarifying our space needs. This strategic plan, which will be reviewed annually, will enable FCA to continue to provide the highest level of professional human services to the clients we serve. Some other important highlights from this past year include: •Reaccreditation of our Russian adoption services, with FCA now one of only twelve American agencies approved to work in Russia. Effective new leadership for the Adoption Program and Adoption Foundation with continued positive integration of Adoption Program and Adoption Foundation efforts. •Reorganization of the Family Support and Intensive In-home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services programs, now under new leadership, which has led to greater clarity in the delivery of these important services and an expansion in the number of at-risk children served. •New community partners, including Norwalk Community College, which is now home to FCA’s afterschool program for middle school aged children from Norwalk. Robert F. Cashel, FCA President & CEO •Expansion of our Board of Directors with the addition of seven new Board members that has added expertise in the areas of fundraising, business and law. Advisory Board •Establishment of new leadership positions in the Finance and Development departments to strengthen our ability to meet FCA’s fiscal management and volunteer involvement objectives. Sharon Sullivan, Chair Andy Alcosser Susan McCarthy Bates Anne Cary Anne Cooling Ginger Craft Susan Bartush Cugliari Sen. Bob Duff Kristine Granetz Margaret Harrington Sheldon Hearst Lt. Thomas E. Webster, Jr. •Continued successful fundraising that has led to significant increases in event revenue and in private foundation grant funding. As you read through this year’s Annual Report you will see the comments by you, our donors and volunteers, about why you give your time and financial support to FCA. Through your involvement, you are true partners in our efforts to improve the lives of the individuals, children and families who need our help. Thank you for your participation in this vitally important work. Matthew Greene, Chairman Robert F. Cashel, President & CEO Adoption ...creating permanency for children Joining with a family in their journey to adopt is a rich and rewarding experience. Social workers partner with prospective families as they go through their adoption process, preparing them to be parents, helping them cope with the wait for their child by connecting them with other adoptive families, and rejoicing with them on the day of their child’s arrival. The placement of a child with a permanent and loving family is a source of joy for all. “We count ourselves lucky to be part of the FCA family. From the application process to traveling to China and returning with our daughter, FCA staff has been exceptional. Our experience was a truly pleasurable and rewarding one.” – Sharon and Steve Rowley FCA Adoptive Parents Over 500 families served “Our experience with FCA has been priceless. We owe our family to their hard working staff.” – Vae Champagne and Jim Mecca FCA Adoptive Parents “Once you have seen the potential in a child realized, who might not otherwise be given a chance, you have no choice but to help and give of yourself.” – Karen Scappaticci, Chair The Adoption Foundation Making a Difference 1 Services for Seniors ...safety, security and independence at home The senior years can be especially challenging for the elderly as well as their families as they wrestle with health care issues, a senior’s desire to remain independent, and the concerns of loved ones for their safety and security. FCA’s home-care services offer a continuum of professional, compassionate care, giving seniors and their families peace of mind. 1,800 individuals connected to Lifeline, Connecticut’s emergency response system “FCA is an organization that people can depend on – now and in the future. I support FCA because of its importance to the community.” – Mike Chapey FCA Volunteer “We have been pleased to support FCA’s programs because FCA is always striving to improve its performance and incorporate best practices – whether for a youth development program for girls or home repair program for seniors. FCA is a learning organization, and this is part of their organizational culture.” – Karen R. Brown, MPA Vice President of Programs The Fairfield County Community Foundation 740 seniors remained independent in their homes with carpenter service (specializing in handicap-accessible renovations), chore service, homemaking, transportation, companions, home health aides, and full-time live-in care through HomeCare Plus 2 Family & Children’s Agency, Inc. Counseling ...skilled support services for life’s challenges 32 children with mental illness served through IICAPS (Intensive In-home Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Services) Understanding the history, cultural background, and family dynamics helps the therapists connect with those in need on an individual, family or group basis. FCA’s clinical staff is comprised of trained professionals with a diverse set of clinical expertise in areas such as marriage and family counseling, substance abuse, art therapy, anger management and play therapy. One program, Project REWARD, is a holistic substance abuse program for women that addresses issues of sobriety, parenting, and self-care. 63 women and 30 of their children supported in Project REWARD’s substance abuse program “The Tudor Foundation supports FCA, a critical resource in our community, because of the many programs it offers to individuals from infancy through their senior years.” – The Tudor Foundation “My involvement with FCA spans over 15 years, and during that time the needs of our community have greatly increased. FCA has always been at the forefront of providing supportive programs to those in need and has made significant differences in improving the lives of children and families. I can’t think of a more deserving organization to generously support.” – Kathy Murphy FCA Board Member 244 clients received counseling services in individual and group sessions by licensed clinicians. FCA is licensed and credentialed for child, adolescent and adult psychiatric services Making a Difference 3 Homeless Services ...a safe haven Homelessness is caused by a variety of reasons often beginning with untreated mental illness which can lead to unemployment, isolation, and eventually losing one’s home. With its non-structured atmosphere, Community Connections is the first step toward engaging clients in needed treatment and rehabilitation. We support individuals in strengthening themselves to make the changes necessary to better their lives. “We can all make a difference, even in a small way. FCA makes a difference on a daily basis in our community; its broad range of programs helps people of all ages with a myriad of problems. There are so many needs right in our own backyard and yet each of us can help, even in a small way, to make someone’s life a little better. It’s hard to make a difference in the world today but with FCA so close to home, you can see the results right away.” – Sharon Sullivan FCA Board Member 782 people served through our drop-in center and outreach programs that support and stabilize their housing needs “As a donor, an important criterion for me in supporting an organization is to know how that organization spends its money. With FCA, I know with certainty that my gifts go where they are needed – to people and programs.” – Anne Cary FCA Advisory Board Member 4 Family & Children’s Agency, Inc. Foster Care ...safe, stable, loving homes FCA provides specialized foster care placement for children who have therapeutic and medically complex issues and are referred by the Department of Children and Families. Foster parents receive support, guidance, and on-going training by FCA staff to help children adjust to their new home environments. Our foster parents have special gifts in understanding, loving, and supporting the children placed in their care. 87 children cared for in loving homes by 59 foster parents “As a donor and volunteer, I support FCA because of the important role it plays in the community. FCA’s extensive range of programs and outreach initiatives is critical in helping to meet the needs of others. Working with FCA’s knowledgeable staff toward a mutual goal is truly rewarding.” – Michaela Snyder FCA Volunteer “The Department of Children and Families and Family & Children’s Agency have always worked to maintain a close and collaborative relationship for the children and families that we jointly serve. In today’s society, it is becoming increasingly clear how complex and intergenerational problems have evolved and are sustained within families. It is even more clear that we must continue to strive toward open communication and supporting each other together as partners for today and the future. We look forward to our continued efforts with FCA.” – Ken Mysogland Area Director of Norwalk and Stamford, The Department of Children and Families Making a Difference 5 “The question is not why I volunteer; the question is, as a mother, how can I not? FCA is one of the few places where you KNOW you are making a difference from day one. You can see it in the eyes of the clients.” – Ana Goizueta FCA Board Member Family Support …learning to become better parents Helping parents helps children. FCA’s prevention and intervention programs give guidance and support to parents and their children. The staff at FCA works closely with families to identify needs and encourage them in their efforts. Through home visits, parent education, and community referrals, we work with parents to find solutions and develop new skills. These skills break the negative cycle and help parents to provide brighter futures for their children. 563 families supported in Prevention Programs “FCA is a wonderful, organized agency, and I always felt welcome and as if my part mattered.
