(February 23, 2007)-The Performing Arts Series performance of Tlen Huicani, award-winning musicians from Veracruz, Mexico, originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24, has been rescheduled to this Sunday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Edson Auditorium. Tlen-Huicani, which means "the singers" in the indigenous Indian language of Nahuatl, has taken the beautiful "harpa jarocha" or folk harp, and has made it the centerpiece of their music. Founded in 1973, Tlen-Huicani has been honored by the Union of Music and Theater Critics as the best folk group in Mexico. Maestro Alberto de la Rosa is considered among the most outstanding folk harpist in the world, and the ensemble features all manner of folk harps, along with guitars, two-stringed violins and lush vocals. Renaldo Migaldi of the Chicago Reader describes the experience that Tlen-Huicani brings to the audience, "rich-throated vocalists harmonize on lushly melodic motifs and it's enough to make you want to float off into the almond-scented ether." The Quartetto Gelato is the next to perform in the Performing Arts Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 21, also in Edson Auditorium. Ticket information for the Performing Arts Series is available by calling the Office of Student Activities at UMM, (320) 589-6080.
