The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to an LWTech graduate who has brought
distinction to the College. Established by the Office of the President in 2013, this is the
highest honor the institution bestows upon an alumni in recognition of professional accomplishments and service to the College. The recipient for this year’s award is Elaine
Melnick. Elaine is the kind of individual all instructors hope to have in their classes; and
employers hope to hire. She’s intelligent, curious, driven, committed, is amiable, and has
an exceptional work ethic. Elaine has taken the initiative to successfully navigate several
levels of postsecondary education. She exemplifies the concept of pathways as a core value
to LWTech. The principle of a pathways approach is to provide students with the ability to
access and start at any level of education, leave the institution with workforce ready skills,
return to enhance their skills, or to prepare for transfer to another college.
4
Dr. Amy Morrison Goings is Lake Washington Institute of Technology's ninth president.
She joined LWTech in July of 2013. Prior to coming to LWTech, Dr. Morrison Goings
served for nearly ten years in vice presidential roles including advancement as well as
campus operations at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Washington. Morrison
Goings also served as adjunct faculty. She received her doctorate in Higher Education
Administration at the University of Nebraska Lincoln in December 2013 as part of the
National Community College Leadership Cohort. She received her Masters of Public
Administration at The Evergreen State College and her undergraduate degree at Mills
College. Dr. Morrison Goings serves on the Boards of One Redmond and Seattle Goodwill,
and is a member of Redmond Rotary.
Jim began as a student at LWTech in 1994, bringing seven years’ experience in the US Navy
as a Data Systems Technician and a BA from Chapman University earned during that time.
From 1980 to 1993 he worked in the computer mainframe industry for Burroughs and
Unisys Corporations. He was hired that same year (1994) to teach Electronics, Data
Communications and Operating Systems in the Computer Field Service program for an
evening workforce cohort, and aided in the transition to the college credit curriculum that
became Computer Security and Network Technology. He is a Tenured Faculty, holds A+
and Security+ certifications, and has added Linux and PowerShell scripting to the CSNT
offerings. Jim is currently the Faculty Federation president, and serves as LWTech’s
representative to the state Faculty Association of Community and Technical Colleges
(FACTC).
Robert spent the first part of his life growing up in Fairbanks Alaska where he enjoyed
snowboarding and spending summers fishing in the mountains of the Brooks Range. He
then moved as a teenager to Kirkland Washington and graduated from B.E.S.T. Alternative
High School where his love of art grew strong. After struggling with many challenges
during his early 20's he found himself working in the Seattle art community, hanging art in
galleries and museums and working selling the supplies to glassblowers. During his mid
30's he decided to make a life change and he found himself choosing Lake Washington
Institute of Technology as a college to complete a degree. Today Robert is receiving an
Associates of Arts in Funeral Services Education, the only program of its kind in
Washington State.

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene represents Washington’s 1st Congressional District, which
spans from northeast King County to the Canadian border, and includes parts of King,
Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom counties. First sworn into the House of Representatives
on November 13, 2012, DelBene brings a unique voice to the nation’s capital, with more
than two decades of experience as a successful technology entrepreneur and business
leader in the private sector. Growing up, Suzan saw her parents struggle to make ends
meet. Determined to arm herself with a quality education, with the help of student loans
and financial aid, Suzan worked her way through college and earned a bachelor's degree
from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. She later received a Master's in Business
Administration from the University of Washington. After college and graduate school,
Suzan became a leader in technology and innovation. Suzan embarked on a 12-year career
at Microsoft. Among just a handful of women serving at the executive leadership level at
Microsoft, Suzan worked as a corporate vice president running worldwide sales,
marketing, and product management for the company's mobile technology business.
She served as CEO and president of the startup company Nimble Technology. Beyond her
private sector experience, public service has always been central to Suzan's story. It is a key
reason she decided to seek public office in the first place. She was an advisor to Global
Partnerships, a microfinance nonprofit focused on providing needed loans to help create
economic opportunities for people living in poverty. She has worked with the YWCA to
build programs to provide transitional housing and job training to women and families
struggling to get back on their feet.
In 2010, Suzan was appointed by Governor Gregoire to be the Director of the Washington
State Department of Revenue. During her tenure, Suzan proposed reforms to cut red tape
for small businesses. She also enacted an innovative tax amnesty program that generated
$345 million to help close the state’s budget gap, while easing the burden on small
businesses.
Through her role on the House Judiciary Committee, DelBene has been at the forefront of
issues relating to technology and privacy, and has become a leading voice in the House
calling for greater transparency and oversight of the NSA to restore American’s privacy
rights. She is also focused on advancing common-sense immigration reform.
DelBene was appointed to serve on President Obama’s Export Council, the President’s
advisory committee on international trade. She also serves as co-chair of the New
Democrat Coalition’s 21st Century Job Skills Working Group, and co-chair of the Women's
High Tech Caucus, Internet of Things Caucus, Trademark Caucus, and Aluminum Caucus.
DelBene was named a Champion of Main Street Businesses by the Washington Retail
Foundation, and received the 2014 Distinguished Community Health Advocate Award
from the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) for her work to
expand access to care for our nation’s most vulnerable communities. She was also awarded
the President’s Award from the NAACP for her work on behalf of veterans and their
families. Her works focuses on ensuring that our nation and this region lead in creating
high-wage 21st century jobs—great educational opportunities for our children and ongoing
training for adults; a financial system that is fair, strong, and transparent; incentives that
foster research, innovation, and entrepreneurship; and a health care system that works for
everyone.

Dear Graduates,
Congratulations! Today is the culmination of the hard work, perseverance and dedication
that you’ve put toward your education. You are leaving Lake Washington Institute of
Technology with marketable skills, industry relationships, and lifelong friends.
The relationship you have with the college doesn’t end today. The staff in our Employment
Resource Center is available to help you as you look for employment with a variety
resources, and when you need a certificate or continuing education classes, we will be here
for you. We are here to support you as you move to this next phase of your life. For more
than 50 years, LWTech has served our community by providing students with innovative,
high-demand workforce training options. Our faculty and staff have believed in you every
step along the way, and are here to support you at all points in your career path, not just
while you’re at LWTech, but beyond.
I’m so proud of what this graduating class has accomplished during its time at LWTech.
You have excelled on the regional and national stage by representing the college at events
around the country. For example, you’ve medaled at the SkillsUSA State Conference, won
first place at the regional ACF Culinary Knowledge Bowl, and at the Northwest HR
Management Association Student Conference and Case Competition. You also represented
the college at CanSat, the annual student design-build launch competition for spacerelated topics that’s sponsored by NASA. You’ve done this all while balancing work, family,
friends and school. What you’ve accomplished is inspiring.
You made the decision to change your life and you did it. You have set the bar high and
now you are an inspiration to those around you.
You’re leaving here ready to conquer the next phase of your life, and we’re proud to have
played a part in it. Your future is bright.
Wishing you all the best and the sincerest of congratulations!

The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities
first took form. The ordinary dress of the scholar, whether student or teacher, was the
dress of a cleric. With few exceptions, medieval scholars took at least minor orders,
made certain vows, and were occasionally tonsured. Long gowns were worn and may
have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings. Hoods seem to have served as
cover for the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap.
The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was a much later development, and
one which was standardized only in the United States in the late 19th century. White,
taken from the white fur trimming of the Oxford and Cambridge B.A. hoods, was
assigned to arts and letters. Red, one of the traditional colors of the church, went to
theology. Green, the color of medieval herbs, was adopted for medicine, and olive,
because it was so close to green, was given to pharmacy. Golden yellow, standing for the
wealth which scientific research has produced, was assigned to the sciences.
The caps and gowns worn today are the official and traditional regalia designed for
graduation. A student wears a long, full-flowing robe and a tight-fitting skull cap
attached to a stiff piece called a mortarboard, with a tassel dangling from a button
placed in the center of the mortarboard. Some of the participants may wear a cape or
hood lined with colored silk and trimmed with velvet. Most collegiate caps, gowns and
hoods are black. The cut of the robe and its sleeves, as well as its trimming, indicate
various academic degrees. In 1884, the Intercollegiate Commission set the standards of
academic regalia in the United States.

credits of academic core courses. Thirty percent of credits must be completed at Lake
Washington Institute of Technology and the student must receive a minimum passing
grade of 2.0 or higher in each course, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
An Associate of Science MRP/DTA is awarded to students studying specific pathways
leading to transfer to specific majors at the baccalaureate level. These degrees are
awarded upon completion of a minimum of ninety credits. Thirty percent of credits
must be completed at LWTech and the student must receive a minimum passing
grade of 2.0 or higher in each course, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
A Certificate of Proficiency is awarded to students meeting technical program
requirements of forty- five to eighty-nine credits in length. At least 15 credits of
academic core courses are required. Thirty percent of credits must be completed at
LWTech and the student must receive a minimum passing grade of 2.0 or higher in
each course, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
A Certificate of Completion is awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the
competencies and requirements for programs of less than one academic year; less than
forty-five credit hours in length.
All public high school students are required to meet statewide graduation requirements
in order to earn a diploma. Requirements to earn a high school diploma include: earn
high school credit, pass state tests or approved alternatives to those tests, complete a
Culminating Project, and Complete a High School and Beyond Plan.
General Education Development is a series of four tests developed by the
American Council on Education to enable persons to obtain the equivalency of a high
school diploma. Earning a GED® provides greater access to employment,
advancement, and higher education opportunities.

Thank you to our student leaders who were actively involved in leadership and activities.
Associated Student Government officers, student chartered club officers, and committee
student volunteers. This year, over 15 student club communities were chartered through the
Associated Student Government. These groups supported cross campus and department
activities to build skills, networks, and campus life. By contributing numerous hours of
volunteering they built an involving campus experience for the greater student body. Aside
from building a positive campus experience, they placed in competitions across the region
and country, bringing accolades to LWTech.
To prepare students for today’s careers and tomorrow’s opportunities.

Our programs are guided by more than 350 representatives from 264 businesses and
industries serving as advisory committee members. They set the standards for programs to
ensure every facet of our programs meets the specific needs of the industry. They also shape
curriculum, measure outcomes, guide equipment selection and communicate industry trends
to each department.
