Fleming College leads schools in taking action on
bottled water
Fleming College and Earth
Day Canada (EDC) have
formed a new partnership
to reduce the environmental impact of plastic water
bottles.
EDC has signed a
formal agreement with
Fleming College to develop
a campaign incorporating
Fleming H2O (F-H2O)
marketing materials into a drive to reduce the use of plastic water bottles. The
campaign materials will be promoted and distributed to schools across Canada
in the near future. The F-H2O project, officially launched on March 19, saw the
college install reverse osmosis water fountains at its Sutherland
Campus in Peterborough. This project was designed to dissuade
students and staff from using plastic water bottles, due to their negative impact
on the environment.
The manufacturing, distribution and disposal of bottled water, has
been proven to have a negative impact on the environment. According to the
Environment and Plastics Industry Council, 88 per cent of water bottles are
not recycled and 65,000 tonnes of beverage containers ended up in landfills or
incineration (2002).
“Fleming is committed to the environment and practises what it teaches,
emphasizing sound and sustainable environmental practices at our campuses,
in our faciliities and in all our work. We are very pleased with the contribution
our Water Project will make towards reducing our college’s footprint on the
environment,” said Dr. Tony Tilly, President of Fleming College.
Students in the college’s Marketing program, taking an Applied Projects
course, developed marketing materials and an awareness campaign to promote
the new water systems at the college. The campaign brands the new water systems and fountains as F-H2O
refresh, retain, refill with free being the key driver targeting students to make
filling stations part of their daily routine at school. The Marketing students
developed logos and taglines to create a brand

programs for the simple reason they

“Graduates of post-graduate
programs are highly employable,”
says Debora Windover of the
college’s Centre for Learning and
Teaching. “Students who participate
in these programs often attain a
position in their field during their
studies because they are intensely
involved in specialized projects and
field work. This specialized training
enables graduates to advance more

Kimberly Desjardins
Business Administration – Marketing Class of 2005
Kimberly was going to be a teacher. She had already decided to apply to University for Con-Ed, but a chance encounter with a Fleming College Grad Recruiter changed her
path. The information she received on the Fleming College
Marketing program excited her enough to take a trip from
her Barrie home to a College Open House. The opportunity
to meet and speak to faculty sealed the deal.
During her time as a student Kimberly worked at a
local establishment bartending. With tight finances as
most students experience, Kim didn’t have a lot for extras.
However, she did have a “passion for fashion” and decided
to make her own clothing for work. She received many
compliments and was soon designing uniforms for her
co-workers.
After graduation Kimberly was eager to work as a
grad recruiter for Fleming College. This allowed her to
give back and to perfect her presentation and networking
skills. She then took a job as a sales agent for a national
car rental company. Although she excelled in this position,
quickly being promoted to assistant manager and winning
recognition awards for her service, she didn’t feel fulfilled in
her career.
After investigating and consulting with her former
teachers, Kimberly decided to go into her own business.
Although she had no formal training in design, Kimberly
combined her marketing and business background with her
“passion” and created “mikandi” (my-can-dee) a designer
fashion company designed to reach college and university

consists of versatile, fresh fashions made out of 100%
organic cotton, bamboo, soybean and recycled post
consumer products.
But one business was not enough, Kim saw the
opportunity to use her positive environmental practices
further by creating “Center of Attention Promotions”
offering creative custom in-house imprinting and silk
screening for companies’ promotional products with
the same principles of her sustainable fashion practices.
Kim works with eco-friendly apparel decorators that use
healthier more functional water based inks, avoiding
PVC’s, phthalates, and high process water and energy
requirements that are a part of conventional silk screening.
The resulting images have a soft feel that breathes and won’t
crack so it’s more comfortable and durable.
Kimberly is forging ahead with plans to open her own
store in Peterborough by fall of 2008. She is active in the
Peterborough business community as a member of the
Peterborough Chamber of Commerce and has been on
hand at several Fleming College events to speak about her
experiences. She believes it is important to be a part of the
community in which you do business and is committed to
making her business more socially responsible.

living every day to the fullest and have no regrets!”

Feast of Dreams
– Sutherland Campus, March 5th, 2008
Over 150 guests attended
the Feast of Dreams – Travel
the World gala event. The
Sutherland Campus was transformed into an international tour with stops in France,
England, Brazil, India, Korea, The Canary Islands, Spain
and Canada. Guests were welcomed by Tony Tilly,
College President and greeted at each station by our
“tour guides” from Fleming’s Hospitality Administration
– Hotel & Resort Program. Guests then sampled an
array of delectable offerings from chicken tikka masala
and lobster newburg to an assortment of fresh French
pastries all prepared by the faculty and students of the
Culinary Management Program.
The night would not have been such a success
without the support of our many sponsors: Country
105/Energy 99.3, The Wolf/Kruz, Star 93.3/The Breeze,
Nexicom, Canadian Uniform and Linen Services,
Leaven, The Vincent Press, Colio Estate Wines, Sysco

The event grossed over $20,500, net proceeds will be
matched through the Provincial Government’s Ontario
Trust for Student Support Program and will go towards
an endowed bursary for culinary students in financial
need.

This ‘sold out’ event, hosted at the Haliburton
School of the Arts, the 2008 Feast of Foods –
Eurofeast grossed over $23,000. The night’s
journey delighted guests with exotic tastes from
Spain, Turkey, Morocco and India.
The Foundation would like to thank the
wonderful volunteers and staff that donated
auction items and their time to ensure this event
was the most successful Feast to date. Also,

Communicating cross-culturally
Nothing is more frustrating that not
being understood. Anyone who has
traveled abroad knows that awful
feeling of trying to communicate in
a language you don’t master. Then
there are the cultural differences that
create barriers between people even
when they speak the same language.
Misunderstandings are often the outcome.
At Fleming, we want to be an
inclusive environment that welcomes
difference. As Ontario becomes
one of the most culturally diverse
regions in the world, knowing how
to communicate cross-culturally is
becoming an increasingly important
skill both for College employees
and the community that supports
them. Over 50 languages are spoken
in Ontario. New Canadians and
international students are coming
to Fleming from nations as diverse
as Ghana, China and Peru. New
citizenship data collected through
the First Year Student Survey shows
that 7% of full-time students were
either born outside of Canada or
are the children of new immigrants.
Many other new Canadians are also
enrolling in Continuing Education
courses to upgrade their skills.
The Diversity Office of Human
and Organizational Development
is supporting Fleming employees
in developing the cross-cultural
communication skills needed to serve
an increasingly diverse student body.
Practical workshops are offered to
faculty and support staff, as well as
student leaders. The Diversity Office
also collaborates with local partners
such as the New Canadian’s
Centre and Workforce

make these kinds of

The GIS programs at Frost Campus are an
example of this. Often, students in these programs
have jobs before they graduate and gain valuable
experience through their applied projects, completed
in partnership with industry clients.
Programs are usually one year – between two and
four semesters in length – and offer an internship
opportunity or an applied project component to
ensure hands-on, practical experience.

Former Fleming College president receives special honour
The Fleming College Board of Governors honoured former Fleming College president, Dr.
Brian Desbiens, when the college officially
renamed its Technology Wing the Brian L.
Desbiens Galleria and Technology Wing. The
naming ceremony took place on March 5 at 6:30
p.m. in the Galleria as part of the Feast of Dreams
Gala, a fundraiser for Fleming College scholarships and bursaries.
“On the basis of Dr. Desbiens’ impact on
Fleming College after 16 years as president, the
Board of Governors felt it appropriate to name
one of the key projects initiated and led by
him. The naming of this space reflects Brian’s
connection to our college and the Peterborough
Dr. Brian Desbiens in the Brian L. Desbiens Galleria and Technology Wing, Fleming College - Sutherland Campus
community,” says Murray Rodd, Chair of the
Fleming College Board of Governors.
Dr. Desbiens served as President of Fleming College from May 1988 until his retirement in August 2004. During his
tenure he oversaw the expansion of the college’s facilities with the construction of a new Haliburton Campus, a new
Environmental Wing at the Frost Campus and the Technology Wing at the Sutherland Campus. Dr. Desbiens was also
instrumental in forming the partnership behind St. Joseph’s at Fleming.
In 2006 Dr. Desbiens received the Minister’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Ontario’s college
system. He has served at various times as President of the National College President’s Network, chair of the Ontario
Committee of Presidents and as a member of the Prime Minister’s National Advisory Board on Science and Technology.
Opened five years ago on March 5, 2003, the Technology Wing’s central feature is a light-filled Galleria. The wing also
hosts an Engineering Commons, Telecommunications Lab, Smart House Lab, classrooms, Computer Commons, the Paul D.
Scholfield Boardroom, and a lecture theatre.

News From Frost
The new Ecological Restoration Honours B.Sc. Joint Trent-Fleming Degree/Diploma being offered
at Fleming’s Frost Campus in Lindsay is all set to
begin in September 2008 with full registration and
a waiting list of students. Dr. Eric Sager has been
hired to serve as the Program Coordinator. “I’m
excited about the uniqueness of this type of student opportunity
nationally, and how it draws on the strengths of two institutions that
have strong traditions in the environmental fields. I’m looking forward with
excitement to receiving the first cohort of students.”

James Lamore, a 1995 General Arts
and Science graduate is an unassuming and friendly gentleman who loves
to talk about his love of motorcycles.
But delve deeper into James’ story
and you will find a very giving man
with a passion for his community, his
church and for children’s issues.
Each year James rides his 1980
Honda Goldwing GL1100 Sportster in
the Peterborough Christmas Parade
collecting teddy bears to distribute
to children who need them. Every
year he is the smallest float but a very
popular one! This summer James
organized the “Teddy Bear Run”. On
June 22nd, riders from all over met
to ride and collect teddy bears for
Five Counties Children’s Centre and
Crossroads shelters.
“I try to do my bit”, he says
modestly.
James did more than his bit on
July 15, 2004 when Peterborough
was hit with a devastating
flood. James could have stayed
in the safety of his East City
apartment but instead he
rushed to assist after a frantic
call from friends who were
trapped in their London
Street home. James was
awarded the Mayor’s Award
for Heroism for the rescue.
“Things happen for a reason,”
says James. “You just have to have a
little faith”
It is his faith and desire to help
others that keeps James going. He
has written a children’s book about
bicycle safety and hopes to impart
his knowledge about self defence and
survival skills. He remains active in
his church and in the community and
is always looking for new ways to give
back.

Funny how things go full circle. It has been
years since I worked in a field that dealt with
the environment. Well, I am now employed
as a NEW (Nuclear Energy Worker). I work for
a nuclear fuel conversion facility that refines
uranium so that is can be used in different
nuclear reactors all over the world. I love that
I now have an impact on our environment
directly. Gotta love “Clean Energy”. I am also
very excited to announce the birth of our

Zealand to try it out. I have been working for
the City Council in the GIS department for a
year now, updating the GIS information for the
city’s water supply and waste water. Its great
working abroad but I hope to return to Ontario
soon to live and work.

Haliburton ON – Fleming College is pleased to announce Sandra Dupret as the new
principal of the Haliburton Campus, home to the Haliburton School of The Arts.
As the current chair of the School of Media, Art and Design at St. Clair College in
Windsor, Ms. Dupret is responsible for strategically leading nine academic programs
delivered at two campus locations. As the former director and curator of exhibitions at
Wayne State University, Ms. Dupret managed and directed more than 110 exhibitions,
where she developed exceptional arts administration skills involving public relations,
advertising, community outreach, fundraising, staffing, and educational programming.
Ms. Dupret has a master’s degree in Fine Arts (printmaking, sculpture) and has taught
in the areas of papermaking, sculpture, and lithography. Her teaching experience is
enhanced by her significant fundraising experience – including grant proposal writing and
donor cultivation.
Ms. Dupret recognizes the uniqueness of the Haliburton School of The Arts and its
long-serving foundation within the Haliburton community. Sandra is looking forward to
assisting the Haliburton Campus as it continues to move forward with its strategic plan of
increasing access, quality and accountability through creativity and innovation. She began her new role as principal on
November 5, 2007.
“I am very honoured to have first been considered and subsequently offered the position of Principal, Haliburton
Campus. Both the Haliburton School of The Arts and the community’s outstanding reputation and commitment to the
arts are highly celebrated and I look forward to being a part of something that is so special. My family and I are very much
looking forward to being a part of the Haliburton community, which has always been one of our favorite places to visit. We
are delighted with the opportunity to now be able to permanently live and work in the region,” said Ms. Dupret.
Fleming College leads schools in taking action on bottled water

College, represented by the Marketing program, are moving
forward together to create and market what appears
to be the first initiative to reduce plastic bottles
containing drinking water in schools across Canada,
said Tony Macdonald, Coordinator of Marketing
Applied Projects at the college.
The F-H2O campaign is fresh, unique and
timely, said Jed Goldberg, Earth Day Canada’s President.
This campaign has all the ingredients necessary to be hugely
successful on any campus, school or workplace in the
country, Goldberg said.
Students in the Marketing Applied Projects course will
create the school-based program using the F-H2O campaign
elements over the fall 2008 semester, in consultation with
EDC. As in F-H2O’s initial campaign, the focus will be on the
environmental impact of plastic bottles and the promotion
of refillable stainless bottles as the primary solution.
This program has tremendous potential given the
growing awareness and concerns around the issue. We
cannot wait to get started working on this with Earth Day
Canada, said Mr. Macdonald. The Fleming College Marketing Applied Projects course
is part of the college’s three-year Marketing program. It
has been branded as the Fleming Applied Agency and
works with real-world clients. For 15 weeks of classes,
students are vested, card-carrying owners in the
business. Students in the second or third year of the
program have the opportunity to take the course.

The Brick Select Rewards Program
As part of our campaign to support student bursaries through the Ontario Trust for Student Support
(OTSS) we will be contacting alumni to ask for their
support. By making a contribution to this program
the government will match every dollar donated so
each contribution will be doubled. This money will be
pooled with other contributions and used to create
endowments (an endowed fund uses the interest from
the funds donated to give out a bursary ensuring that
the bursary will always be available once established)
to make sure that students in financial need are able
to attend college or to complete their course of study.
We ask that when a student calls between Sept. 15
and Dec. 15 that you consider helping a student to get
an education. Your contribution can help to make the
difference for someone.

made a significant contribution to their community.
