The April meeting of IPA-SPI was held April 6 at Mario’s on Clearlake.

Jim Stevens is still working out details of the Jerry Coleman Memorial Pancake Breakfast to benefit the
Land of Lincoln Honor Flight program on August 27, 2016. The Route 66 Cruisers plan to attend and show
their classic cars. Sec’t Bush advised that one or more antique planes may be visiting this summer and the
group may wish to piggyback onto one of those events. KSPI Runway Safety Action Team will meet on
April 28, 2016, 9:30 a.m. at the Knotts Conference Room in the terminal. Meeting adjourned at 7:29 p.m .

STATE NEWS
The April IPA State Board of Directors Meeting was held at UIN on April 9, 2016. Tristan Samuel Dillard of
Mt. Carmel is our 2016 Scholarship winner. With all present working together, the mobile optimized view
for the website is now functioning properly. Additional and new Board Directors will be selected by ballot
at the Annual Meeting. Chuck Midyett of Springfield is the 2016 Safety Competition winner, with 518.5
total points. All members are invited to participate in this event.
USPA NEWS
The United States Pilots Association will be holding their Annual Meeting and election of officers during
their Annual Meeting at Branson May 19-22, 2016. Additional details can be found at

I don’t know what you have been hearing, but I have heard comments about military pilots and commercial
aviation pilots required to have semi-annual physicals. If you haven’t read the legislation, it is for the smallest
planes with the least passengers (above LSA class), doesn’t apply to for-hire operations, and includes a provision
that those flying for charitable purposes have Good Sam laws applied. (This would limit liability for legal and
insurance purposes) NOW is the best time to get this passed, if only because FAA Administrator Huerta has
himself attained PPL status (hopefully at his own cost) and is the one person in that position who might best
understand the rationale behind our forcefulness on this issue.

Congratulations Andy Dow, Master Aviation Educator
The Springfield Chapter of the Illinois Pilots Association takes great pride in announcing a significant aviation
accomplishment on the part of Andrew “Andy” Donovan Dow, assistant professor of aviation at Quincy
University , resident of Quincy, Illinois, and member of our Chapter since 2013.
Recently, Andy was accredited as a Master Aviation Educator (MAE) by Master Instructors LLC, the
international accrediting authority for the Master Instructor designation as well as the FAA-recognized and
approved Master Instructor Continuing Education Program (MICEP). He is one of only 14 aviation educators
worldwide to achieve the MAE credential.
Master Aviation Educator accreditation recognizes those individuals who work as professional teachers of
aviation in industry and / or government but who do not necessarily hold FAA instructor certification. Fewer
than 800 aviation educators worldwide have achieved one or more of the Master accreditations thus far.
Twenty-two (22) of the last National Flight Instructors of the Year, National FAASTeam Representatives of the
Year, or National AMTs of the Year were Masters while Andy is one of only 15 Illinois teachers of aviation to
earn this prestigious “Master” title.
In the words of former FAA Administrator Marion Blakey, “The Master Instructor accreditation singles out the
best that the right seat has to offer.”
The Master Instructor designation is a national accreditation recognized by the FAA. Designees are recognized
as outstanding aviation educators for not only their excellence in teaching, but for their engagement in the
continuous process of learning — both their own, and their students’. The designation must be renewed
biennially and significantly surpasses the FAA requirements for renewal of the candidate’s flight instructor
certificate.
After 50 Missions, They Got to Come Home

Diary entry: Monday, 4-26-43 A very disastrous day. 35 ships [B-25’s] went up over Suliman and
encountered heavy and accurate ack-ack fire. All but one (Davis) returned, but some badly damaged. Two
collided in middle of the field. Fortunately no one hurt. One ship was cut in half just behind the armor
door. Pete made a beautiful belly landing. One ship had rudder riddled and partly shot away. No one hurt
in that ship. Poduska was hit badly in face and neck. Snow saved his life. Latest word is that Poduska
had 50-50 chance of saving his eye. Davis, Durrance, and Huppert have not been found yet on Wed. Many
other ships were badly hit. 8 of 27 came back OK. [Charles Huppert mentioned here was loosely portrayed
by James Coburn in the movie “The Great Escape”]
Even to a 25 year old college graduate from Illinois, these events from WWII were ‘disastrous’. He would have
studied about The World War and believed his government that something like that could never happen again.
His government had been wrong. Loren Jenne got drafted into this mess and would do what all farm kids do:
his very best under less than ideal circumstances. He didn’t do it for the hardware: European Theater Medal
with 3 Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters. He didn’t do
it for the certifications he received: Ground Instructor, Advanced Ground Instructor, Instrument Ground
Instructor, and Certified Flight Instructor for single, multi-engine, and instrument aircraft. He did it for the
same reason so many American boys went to war: so that the enemy wouldn’t bring the fight to our home
fields.
Loren already had a BS in Education from Eastern Illinois University and was planning his wedding to Hazel
Jane Carnes when he was drafted. He already had a job, teaching in Alvin, IL. He already had a purpose in life
and a reason to celebrate it.
But what came after that in a life that spanned nearly a century?
Planes he would have never flown, and people he would have never met, and places he would have never had
any reason to travel to otherwise. Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” could have been written about
Colonel Jenne’s life.
Navion, Cessna, Cherokee, Bellanca, Fairchild, Stearman open cockpit bi-plane, Mooney. His logbook reads
like a menu of popular planes.

A few of the persons he knew and/or flight instructed were Phil Bisch of Bisch Airways, Joe Angermeier of
KSPI, Colonel Duckworth of the Army Reserves, Warren Thompson, and Lindell Loveless (founder of the
Kretchmar Ham Company) and his son Stephen while Steve was stationed at Ft. Riley, KS.
Talk to Steve and he will offer you a cornucopia of documentation of his Dad’s life. Life after WWII included
Hazel and him having Steve and his sister Lynette, returning to teaching, and retiring from the military after
34 years.
His government service was not confined to the military. Loren also served as Treasurer of Moultrie County, IL.
He was a principal at public schools. He was a co-founder of the Flying 20 Club (based at KSPI).

At least three times per year, the Illinois Pilots Association State Board of Directors
meets at BMI. CJ’s restaurant is right on the field for lunch. The Prairie Aviation
Museum has a conference room that we use for free. These photos are two of the
many, ever changing static displays at PAM. More information can be found at:

At one recent meeting, the museum staff mentioned that they had a surplus of
postcards they needed to pass on. Sec’t Bush picked them up for Member Midyett to
deliver to American Flight Museum at Forbes Field, Topeka, KS for the Spooky crews to
sell at airshows this year.

Illinois' aviation community comes together every May to showcase the significance general aviation brings to
this State's economy and the lives of thousands of workers in the industry. This year's conference will be held
May 4-5, 2016 at the TEC Center on the airport campus of SIU. The Illinois Aviation Trades Association
and the Illinois Department of Transportation/Aero Division are truly excited to host this industry wide
event in an academic environment, where future aviation leaders are being taught. Illinois Aviation Hall of

PURPOSES: The purposes of the Corporation as stated in its Certificate of Incorporation are:
